Nice analysis of what in my opinion are two of the best heist films ever made. Your comments are concise, on point, and best of all, lack the flowery, self-indulgent drivel found in so many other analysis outlets. Well done. How you don't have 50K subs by now is ludicrous.
I´m reading Sterling Hayden´s biography by Lee Mandel and the chapter on Hayden´s screen test for "Asphaltt Jungle" made me cry. He was going through deep troubles with his personal life and thought he was not able to be in this film. I just love this man!
Excellent points and I can agree. Both terrific films, I love them. But I give THE ASPHALT JUNGLE the prize because of the characters. Yes the characters in the Kubrick film are well-written and acted, but in Huston's film the character of Emmerich (the corrupt lawyer, played by Louis Calhern) has almost Shakespearian, tragic depth. For me, he makes TAJ a great film. And there is that ending: Dix arriving finally at the horse farm. Wow.
The Asphalt Jungle is an incomparable film. It is both the ultimate evolution of Huston's creation of the noir genre which he made with his very first film The Maltese Falcon (which was released the same year as Citizen Kane and is far more entertaining and has a guy named Bogart in the lead) and the first film made about the creation of a crime told entirely from the criminals' viewpoint. The Killing is also a great film but it is a version of TAJ only told in documentary style and with the added angle to involve horse racing as an accompanying interest.
SPOILERS! The Killing is about the perfect crime ruined by the personal reason why all of them committed the crime in the first place and The Asphalt Jungle is about the perfect crime ruined by "fate". Reasons they never thought could be possible. Amazing films both of them
Interesting observation; I generally see it as closer to the other way around. Been a while since I watched both though, probably since I made this video.
The Killing is a pretty good film but I thought Asphalt Jungle was the better film. The was a humanity to the characters. The down and out Midwest locations. The tightness of the script. Kubrick is a great technical director and is capable of great films but overall Huston is the superior film maker. He just had a greater life experience and it shows. Asp
+thebiblemachine Thanks - and hopefully it will get there. For my channel at least when posting about classic movies100 in a few days isn't too bad so if people keep sharing it, it can keep growing.
I wonder if Sterling Hayden did the killing because he could portay a character who was the complete in oposite his attirtude to horses to that in Jungle. An underrated actor? He gives my favourite performance in Dr Strangelove, and for me, also the best thing about The Long Goodbye.
Un confronto veramente interessante. Kubrick rende un doveroso omaggio al capolavoro di Huston. Due film indimenticabili, due pietre miliari nella storia del cinema.
I can see that. For me The Killing is more fun (& easier to repeat-view) while Asphalt Jungle is a bit deeper and offers more to think about after. I love them both for different (but overlapping) reasons.
The Killing also has some real gallows humor like when Hayed first hires the gunmen to shoot the horse.Even the narrator's voice is funny though maybe unintentionally.

Glad you enjoyed it, thanks for the appreciation!

I'd love to read more about Hayden's life - seems like he led an interesting one.

The perfect double feature.
Another great video
+Willower thanks, glad you enjoyed it.
This video should have more than 1,000 views. Guess it isn't about super hero movies.

Great stuff, Joel!
Nice analysis of great movies!
Both movies are great! These movies are the real deal when it comes to acting! They don't make these dramas anymore that's for sure!
Love them both. I’ll go with TAJ because of the ending and Marylyn Monroe💙

To horses, and a lot else it seems.

Two of the best noirs.
I love both films but will give the nod to the Killing simply because I can watch it on end.
