I watched this last week because I saw Elisha Cook JR was in it and the bonus was Timothy Carey. I never knew his name before looking him up but he’s so good, and weird, in everything. John Torturro kind of reminds me of him. as soon as Cook tells Marie Windsor about the job you know it’s all downhill from there no matter how meticulously and flawless the plan was. . And what a. Great ending. I wondered why they focused on the broken suitcase latch earlier on.

THis has some technical flaws, some acting and delivery flaws, but it's a fascinating piece. Much like Hitchcock films - so often filled with even-at-the-time dumb effects (backdrop motion) - these flaws take nothing away from the film. In fact, spotting Hitch's cheap tricks is part of the fun.

Icepick, yes, but "the gunsel" in MALTESE FALCON is his signature role. And as the narrator to Vincent Price's murder mystery HOUSE ON HAUNTED HILL. What about Sterling Hayden in SUDDENLY (with Frank Sinatra as the psycho killer)? He closes out his career as the white-suited owner of the company in 9 TO 5 (Lily Tomlin, Jane Fonda, Dabney Colman and the surprisely good performance by Dolly Parton. Then, in strides Sterling Hayden...practically a General Jack T Ripper, all over again. Vince Edwards has a good procedural noir film MURDER BY CONTRACT (1958) and follows that up with CITY OF FEAR (1959). Honestly, I don't know how he ever made it out of Med School and onto TV's Ben Casey.

All good observations! I'm just a product of the 80s and before I started my exploration of old cinema classics, it was all about Thomas Magnum solving mysteries in Honolulu and Icepick was one of those background characters I clearly remember. But yeah, I'm learning to appreciate that ecclectic body of work of Elisha Cook jr.

I watch this movie regularly and Marie Windsor....I came for Sterling Hayden and stayed for Marie Windsor. I love her smart cracks as she dies. Great film. Can watch over and over.

    Excellent review man!
It's hard to talk about this film and don't spoil the ending (which is an ASTOUNDING ending btw)
Another thing that always caught my attention about this film it's the character of Marvin played by Jay C. Flippen which seems to be gay (he isTOO attracted to Johnny and iirc it has some dialogue near the end that implies his sexuality)
Great film, great review, and great channel my friend! Cheers from Argentina!
