    More than 7 years ago I bought a Harley Benton L-450Plus. It didn't need any adjusting (besides some octave) and I've used it gigging a lot. Changed the pickups for less powerful ones. No need for shielding whatsoever. Cheers.

    Like many of you, I have this guitar (mine's a lefty). I also removed the pickguard and it looks so much better than the cheap plastic one that came with it. Though I've filled the holes and color matched the paint touch up. It won't pass a close-up inspection, but they are really hard to see unless you know they're there and are looking for them. Thanks for the fun and informative video, I really enjoyed it!

    I’m seriously thinking of buying a Harley Benton SC 550 after watching all these videos about them. They certainly appear to have a level of quality control which the Chibsons just didn’t have. I purchased one of those via Ali Express a couple of years back but ended up giving it to my buddy’s son as I was never satisfied with it.

    • @Chinaguitarsceptic

    On the Crimson Guitars channel tutorial on shielding Ben Crowe advises that when using multiple pieces of sticky foil you should fold over the edge of the overlapping piece as the glue acts as an insulator and stops continuity.

    • @JohnShalamskas
      @JohnShalamskas 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Some foil tape has particles of metal in the adhesive, so that there is conductivity across it. It's a lot less fiddly to apply. If your tape has non-conductive adhesive and is copper, then you can use a blob of solder to ensure connectivity between strips of tape. If you don't want to make a bunch of solder blobs, you can use a sharp tool to score the overlapped tape to jam together the layers through the adhesive. Some people claim there is no need to have DC connectivity across the foil layers, but I prefer my Faraday cages to work well at audio frequency, so I use copper tape with conductive adhesive. Carbon impregnated tape is a good solution too, but it requires several layers and is messy unless you seal it with another layer of clear or colored paint. This takes a lot of time between layers for drying.

    Good info. About the foil, some hardware stores at least here in north america sell the foil used for fixing duct work that's sticky on the back like the copper kind that also works. I've done it a few times n know for sure it works well enough.

    • @Chinaguitarsceptic
      @Chinaguitarsceptic  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Cool man!!! You have to be careful though as the copper is backed with conductive adhesive and I'm not sure the duct foil is?? :-)

      The stuff I have is n so is what I've been able to find. It's easily tested with most any multimeter. On my own I even run a ground to it since it's not touching the grounds otherwise on its own.

      Could you perhaps do a video on the setup of your CST-24T, Specially the intonation part would be interesting for many, since it has the fixed bridge with only the possibility to raise the G & B strings.. Its quiet challenging to intonate the PRS style Bridges!

    Saddle radius can also be a thing of personal preferance; I personally have the 5th and 6th strings almost the same hight as the 4th, perhaps a touch lower, because I have an EXTREMELY heavy picking hand when it comes to riffing (no really; I hit the strings like they've been saying bad things about my mother) and I like to give the string a little more room to vibrate from those extremely heavy pick strokes considering I like my action fairly low.

    Set of feeler gauges - ???? - (0.010 - 0.012") measured at the 8th - capo on the first & fretting the 17th, and an action gauge to get the action - 12th fret - you prefer. Enables you to make repeatable/identical adjustments in the future on this and other guitars.
    £8 - £10 the lot, and well worth the investment.

    • @Chinaguitarsceptic
      @Chinaguitarsceptic  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Good advice friend and that's the proper way to do it consistently. However I wanted to keep it simple for anyone to do with tools they probably have laying around already. This is just a quick basic steps of setup.
      I actually never go as far as gauges because I like my action quite high and it varies from guitar to guitar based on feel. 👍😎

    • @rob_in_stowmarket_uk
      @rob_in_stowmarket_uk 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Chinaguitarsceptic No, of course, I see your reasoning (it was not my intention to criticise, I think your vids are excellent BTW), it's just that, when you're dealing in small increments of a thousandth of an inch, one persons perception of, especially the fairly critical, relief could be 'light years' away from another.
      Keep up the good work.

    I bought the harley benton sc custom in lemon flame and noticed there is some noise...so after watching you do your 450 i decided to do mine...opened it up and the cavities are painted black with the aluminum on the covers already..

    • @Chinaguitarsceptic
      @Chinaguitarsceptic  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That's strange then. Have you got a multimeter? If so check the earth integrity to find where the problem is. However if the shielding is fine it's likely the wires picking up the noise. They are not shielded. Let me know how you get on buddy.

    • @johncartelli
      @johncartelli 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      i have a meter but what am i looking for?..continuity from ground to what?.or not connection from ground to?..my guess is its the wiring are picking up some although if i face a different direction instead of facing and adjusting the amp it goes away..orif i use the boss ns-2 noise suppressor its gone

    • @Chinaguitarsceptic
      @Chinaguitarsceptic  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Simply you need to see if the shielding is continuous - so put one end of a meter measuring resistance say 20Kohms on the ground wire of your guitar (the ring not tip connection) and then check lots of points on the shielding. If it is showing 0 [zero] or tiny levels of resistance then you are good mate. If it's high or off the scale then its not all connected and needs to be joined with solder or contact surfaces joined somehow.

    • @johncartelli
      @johncartelli 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      this is what i found so far,i have connection from earth at all 3 pots and their cavity, including both pickups and their shielded cavities, however,no connection to the pickup selector shielded cavity. and i get hum when either neck or bridge pickup is selected...but none when both are selected...i tried reversing polarity on the neck pup but that didnt help...facing in different directions changes the hum from bad to slightly less....if i engage my Boss Noise Suppressor NS-2 i get quiet all the time...i also just found that if my Boss Compressor CS-3 is off its quiet all the time..so it might be in that unit

  • @richardrichard5409

    As someone who fettles guitars this, is a very good video.😎
    If I can add some value, for a lot of players whom, play a lot of cowboy chords one of THE biggest improvements to be made is, setting nut height, makes the guitar soooooo much easier to play and, helps it lessen playing sharp when fretted down at the busy end. That's getting beyond the scope of this video though 👍

  • @yellowhorse52
    @yellowhorse52 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Hello, my friend. Great video by the way. I have to say one thing I disagree with you is the steps. When I do any shielding on a guitar I always make that the first step. then do a complete setup. Reason being, once you remove the strings for the shielding you pretty much have to do a set up all over again. Just a thought for you to ponder. As always i enjoy your videos. rock on my friend.

    • @Chinaguitarsceptic

    are those stock pick ups? How is the build & sound compared to your PRS? Did the foil make a diffrence?

    • @Chinaguitarsceptic
      @Chinaguitarsceptic  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes they are stock pickups. The build quality is fair to good but way short of the prs se. You get what you pay for up to a point and then it's the rule of diminishing returns. The shielding worked well and when touching any grounded metal parts the guitar is now silent. Without shielded wires inside its the best that can be achieved.

    Very useful and informative video. 6:16 You forgot to mention how key it is to keep the right proportion between that glass of something-something and the rest of the ingredients, as this may be crucial to the success of the process...Too much and the guitar may end up intonated and sounding like a martian ukelele, only you won't notice until you've recovered from the hangover...

    Great Video.. Three Thumbs.. For Four Thumbs you need to SOLDER all the Copper Seams.. THEN... Solder the Copper foil along with a Wire to an EARTH /COMMON point.. (the OUTPUT JACK) Then "METER" to make sure there is NO EARTH POTENTIAL that includes the BRIDGE and STRINGS that includes NO Resistance right to the Tuning Pegs.. Intermittent Ground Loops do happen.. Hey.. Post a link to where that Copper Sheet can be ordered..

  • @BOTzerker
    @BOTzerker 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    I have an issue with your explanation of intonation. According to you the goal is to set each saddle location so the distance from the saddle to the 12th fret is the same as the distance from the nut to the 12th fret. The nut is straight across so the distance from the nut to the 12th fret is the same for every string. Although your bridge is at an angle, based on your goal, all the saddles should be the same distance from the 12th fret. However, I've seen many guitars where the first three saddles and the last three saddles are staggered. As a result saddle high E and saddle D are the same distance from the 12th fret, saddle B and saddle A are the same distance from the 12th fret, and saddle G and saddle low E are the same distance from the 12th fret. Obviously all three distances cannot be the same distance as the distance from the nut to the 12th fret, yet people claim the intonation is pretty close. I've also seen classical / acoustic guitars with a one piece saddle at an angle; again the distance from the saddle to the 12th fret cannot be the same at every string.

      It's the harmonic at the 12th fret that you tune to and then set the intonation to. If I confused that with my explanation then sorry dude. It's how I've always set the intonation and it works.

    The fretboard radius should never change so I would think it's alright to set an adjustable saddle radius first before strings are on using radius gauges. If the neck has a compound radius, do you set the saddle radius to the larger radius?

    • @Chinaguitarsceptic
      @Chinaguitarsceptic  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's much easier to set it using the strings as a guide.

    Love the videos, thought you were going to re-brand the channel to get rid of the "China Guitar Sceptic" name?

    • @Chinaguitarsceptic
      @Chinaguitarsceptic  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Thanks bro. Yes I was considering a change of name but then it's just a name and my old content would not have been so clear. Believe it or not many people still think I'm promoting the fake junk rather than being critical. So I decided that changing the name would do more harm than good for now. Those of you who support me know I've totally changed direction anyway. What do you think mate? 👍😎

    • @stumacd
      @stumacd 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I have to agree with Bell. A 're-brand' is the only way to go. PixxyLixxx did it and so should you.
      I think your channel should break away from the 'China guitar' thing which is kind of over anyway and concentrate more on the great content you are now producing. I think it would help the channel achieve greater popularity.
      Stuff like the partocaster series and the home studio series were excellent. The Harley Benton guitars are awesome as well.
      By the way your guitar playing has come on leaps and bounds. That last tune on this video had some sick playing.

    • @bellend69
      @bellend69 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I think for the development of the channel changing the name is the positive way forward. It will stop a lot of the grief you get and help springboard the channel onto greater heights. I personally think the CGS name alienates a lot of viewers of the channel. Your channel is so much more than fake Chinese guitars.

      Yes I agree but then will I have to take down the old videos? I guess not as they are branded China Guitar Sceptic. Perhaps we should have a vote as I do have a new name and the web domain to go with it. So maybe the time is due!??

    Those are the noisiest humbuckers I have ever heard. Perhaps they were wired or built incorrectly? One coil should be should be reverse wound with a reverse polarity magnet, and connected in series with the other coil. The reversed magnetic field in the reversed polarity coil makes the magnetically induced current additive to the other coil, while making stray electric fields subtractive.
