    As being fairly new to EUCs, this does help demonstrate what folks have been alluding to when they say Gotway has bad build quality. It's a shame too because while folks rave about how the EXN performs (and the biggest enticement on my part), the thought of having to open up a ~$3k wheel every several hundred miles to potentially vacuum real dirt out of its electronics is preposterous to me. I'm guessing any hint of water is out of the question too. Gotway will need a few iterations on this one.

    I received my EX.N in Oct 2021 and it is has many improvements. I too was worried about dust and the fan location, etc. However, the inside has been redesigned. I went on a long dirt road ride and the outside looked like it had been in Desert Storm. I opened the right side case (control board side) and was pleasantly surprised to have NO DUST!. I'm completely new to Electric unicycles and the entire world, but from the little that I have seen so far in my research wasn't Gotway/Begode the company who lost an engineer who went out and started his own brand and secretly developed the Veteran Sherman and released it?
      If my memory serves me correct on that, that could explain the sudden change in the quality of Gotway/Begode.
      Veteran came out with their first wheel as Top Dog..... and I'm pretty sure the Begode Commander was released as a direct answer and competition to Veteran considering the stats and even the aesthetic design and name of the Commander compared to the entirety of the Gotway lineup.

    I recently opened my Gotway MSP to basically inspect the inside. This is after having it for 10 months. I'd say it was spotless inside and for the most part in good shape. I did crash it one good time but, no interior damage to report. Putting it back together was a bit of a challenge because of the gasket which came apart when I separated the shell. But, I fixed that with silicone and already have taken it back and forth from Westchester to NYC twice. Wheel of Torquetion I literally gain speed on steep inclines.

    My guess is part of Gotway's strategy is to constantly make better wheels and taking care of all the little details on the inside greatly slows down that process and increases cost. I think they willingly sacrifice the quality to constantly bring us new wheels that have incredible specs, and as far as they are concerned the strategy works because everyone buys their wheels and most of them are sold out right now. TI still hate the fact that my EX.N that I just ordered has some terrible quality on the inside that will likely cause problems at some point.

    Seems like they could do with some sort of rubber gasket on the inside rim of the shell to further protect it from the elements. But even then the thought that comes to mind every time someone opens one of their wheels is that it's like they shoveled a bunch of electronics into the shell, squirted a half tube of paste on top of it, slammed it shut, and somehow it makes for a nice ride. Then they turn to the camera and say "It just works... Don't question it."

  • @squidsleap

    My RS had wires over the center of the fan, just to make sure this would happen in a tip over! Plenty of wire slack left to move them out of the way gotway just put them there anyway, on a pice of double sided tape to make sure they would apply pressure to center of the fan shroud. It's crazy.
    To keep the dust out I had to plug the motor hole, tape over the trolley handle and add small foam pieces from a gas RC car air filter to the vent holes.
    But, as is tradition, the ride quality is 1st class!

    Good discussion Marty.. Unfortunately it just comes with the territory when you own a BG wheel. You have to be prepared to service it and mod it to avoid all the issues of their BAD engineering practices. It looks like you did not open the shroud that covers the vent hole for the fan. I believe that is a major point of debris entering the the wheel. @rayrok suggests to put a vacuum filter over that opening which I have done and it makes a big difference in dust and dirt ingress. I suggest you do the same. There also is an opening under the motherboard that is not sealed and that also allows dust and water to enter. That should be silicone sealed. After this two mods you’re wheel will run cleaner. Thanks for the comments. I sure hope Begode sees this video and others and learns that they will eventually lose market share as other companies like Veteran challenge their performance level.

    I have to add this comment. If that fan is sucking air in from the in side the housing and blowing it out that hole near the centre of the wheel for cooling then the whole housing is under a negative pressure and the air that being blown out needs to be replaced. Therefore all the air around the wheel is constantly being sucked in along with anything in the air otherwise you’ll have no airflow for cooling. The whole cooling system is based on air flowing into the housing from outside. That is air is filled with dust dirt mud moisture. They can’t have a waterproof wheel with the current design because they wouldn’t have any cooling. With the way they’ve designed the wheel they clearly have no intention of waterproofing.

This brand should have improved the wiring, and the fuses and seals on the wire's terminals are of better quality. Looking at the clip, not using the model produced in 2021, but the 2021 model still has a loud fan noise. Including the foldable handle that has not been improved to make it easier to hold.

  • @radicalhayabusa7681
    @radicalhayabusa7681 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I understand peoples feelings about the wheel and build quality but your getto fix as you so put it is a bad idea. The fan housing is designed specifically to blow down onto the heat sink to keep the board from overheating. By cutting out a piece of the housing you are allowing the fan to blow outside of the housing and not perform its job. This can eventually cause your board to overheat. If the fan housing is tweaked and a blade broken, then the only fix is to replace the fan. If Gotway will not send you a fan under warranty for defects in material and workmanship then I suggest picking up a new fan and replacing it, they are a common fan and not hard to come by. Please do not put out content that can create bigger issues for other EUC owners of this wheel. Thanks, I follow your content and most of it is pretty good.

    • @freeforester1717
      @freeforester1717 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think that on reflection, it might have been best to try the wheel out with the addition of the card/spacer, ie before reaching for the dremel and butchering the casing of the fan, which is of course there for both protection of the fanblade assembly and direction of the airflow created by it. It seems more of a design issue concerning the tolerance of the casing width rather than the relative fragility of the fan per se, as seems to be indicated by the end resulting fix.
      “To the man with the hammer, every problem looks like a nail”, lol! Joking apart, it should be a simple enough matter for both Begode and Leaperkim to tweak their casing designs to accommodate the extra ‘headspace’ required to rectify their respective known tolerance issues, one millimetre added or subtracted here and there would make a world of difference, but in fairness to both companies, I think they are each willing to improve their designs to overcome such shortcomings, most of which have become apparent only after the real-world influencers put them through their paces, more often than not in pretty testing conditions, which is indeed as it should be. Great to realise this did not put you off buying an otherwise great performing wheel.

    older gotway wheels dont really suffer from dust/dirt/water ingress. the new begode wheels, ex,exn,m pro, force air out of the wheel for cooling. this creates a vaccum inside the wheel sucking dust/dirt/water in from any air gap around the wheel. good for cooling, bad for everything else

    ..nothing surprising to me looking inside the New “Begode” EXN.. expect nothing more for what people call “quality built” this is a after all a Gotway from the beginning, a a hobby class high performance EUC that every rider go for. It will never be a Ninebot Z😁! and it need not be one. I think when one buys a Begode this design and engineering quality is considered the best one can expect. One should not talked about fit quality anymore and just take this Begode built standard the benchmark for ultra high performance EUC.. nobody is going to built it like the Z anymore because EUC patent belongs to Gotway! Be safe ride within yr skill☺️

    Not sure I like your solution for the fan. The efficiency of that item will be very compromised. Could thin the fan molding a bit, then add a steel washer spacer (rectangular washer with a rectangular hole) over the fan area so any pressure applied by the cover did not bear in an area causing the problem. I presume the cover could take up the extra thickness, I appreciate any adhoc solution to be a compromise . Pity Gotway wont up their game building it right, it shouldn't cost more than allowing this sloppy workmanship.

    • @MikeMPharmaCyclist
      @MikeMPharmaCyclist 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I agree that the fan will lose some efficiency but once it's covered again I think the difference will be marginal for this application... the cover will serve as the fan housing even if the interface isn't perfect and some pressure will be lost.

    They clearly don’t take pride in their work , if they did, the inside would look just as good as the outside with proper layout and thought. Their formula today is the same as in the beginning. Same type of case, same method for fastening, just new design. Since the early days, the wheels have mostly been updated in the software and extras on the electronics, the overall choice of components as layout looks to be very similar indeed. Begode could replace a part of the plastic shell like the sides with Aluminium.
    Add some fins on parts of it to increase surface area, and make it a passive heat sink eliminating the need for fan's.
    Using the outside air stream to cool the motherboard.
    Additionall benefits would be a potentially stronger shell.
    It doesn't even have to be the entire sides. It could be a Plastic / Aluminium element composite design.
    And for esthetics the Aluminium can be anodized to black if needed.
    Just use the outer part of the shell... why have a hole with a duct system on the inside of the shell close to the tire with potential for water ingress.

    First, I commented that GW is worthless garbage (which it is), but then I decided to elaborate my thoughts on the situation a bit more.
    When your wheel breaks up while you're riding it, for no visible reason, and it constantly happens across the whole lineup... it means that their Q&A is not existent. And engineering is just simply bad. The PEVs that rely only on electronics to balance you on a single wheel while you're going 40mph+ should be sturdy and reliable as hell. It's not that hard to make a wheel that performs well, but it is incredibly hard to make it safe and well-performing at the same time.
    My Nik+ recently just died while I was doing 35kph (I posted on Facebook about it). Fucking burned out. I got some road rash on my side, nothing serious. I am always geared up, fine. But my conclusion here is pretty simple: I learn on mistakes, mine or others; it doesn't really matter - if it's the wheel's fault and not mine, I don't use that brand anymore. I don't want to risk my health and life by supporting a brand that doesn't care about its customers' safety.
    Thank you for the video Marty, it just confirms my thoughts about GW and other brands. The good thing here that you weren't riding it on a public road. Stay safe.

      dollar for dollar you can't beat the gotway wheels. They have more battery power, and motor power at the same prices as other brands. you can get a 1600ah MSX for 1550$.....nobody else beats that price and power. Or a Tesla V2 for 1200$ with over 1000ah, or a Mten3 with 460ah for 780$. I'm not sticking up for the EXN intake and fan design flaws, but most of the over 2000$ wheels seem to be experimental to say the least.
