    This is a remarkable achievement. Most young pianists won't ever have this piece recommended to them for playing by their teachers because of its difficulty, so to play this during a major competition deserves all the praise.

      I believe Horowitz made a statement like one has to have 6 hands to play the whole piece or something. Don’t quote me but something along these lines.

    I think this is a really significant performance of this deeply felt tribute to Schubert by Godowsky. There are very few mistakes. The contrapuntal writing is clear-heaven knows, there is so much of it-and I do hope you keep this work in your repertoire. And no-I don't think it is too fast. A fiery and moving performance of a matchless work. And yes-I do have the score, have worked on it, and followed it during this excellent performance.

    Good job on this highly technical and highly expressive piece. I've recently discovered Godowsky and I can say I have fallen in love! I'm studying this piece and others from Godowsky as well.

    This performance deserves praise for maintaining clarity of technique, intensity, and counterpoint thinking (Schubert's melodies are never buried!) under the unusual and unhealthy strain of a competition - and a competition named after the great Busoni!
    By the way, this performance seems to be close to the interpretation of Rian de Waal, who, as far as I know, is the best performer of this piece.
    Is there a connection?Or is it just a coincidence?

    After listening to this piece by Emanuele Delucchi (my favourite rendition I will say again and again) about 30 times, at 11.32, a clear tribute to Gershwin's Rhapsody in blue. Godowsky composed this masterpiece in New York in 1927, so clever of him!

      Standard progression for Godowsky. He used it before in other works. Godowsky would never incorporate a Jazzy element in such a profound and dramatic piece as the Passacaglia.

      Siirala’s recording is not live. And it’s probably been spliced together from lots of different takes. Can’t really compare fairly with a live performance.

      Assuming you mean Vallee d'Obermann, I've always been confused by the idea that it is melancholic. To me the ending feels like one of the most triumphant and optimistic endings of Romantic music.

      @@bbbmm1810 0:23 Credo lei sappia cio che intendevo, e quello è solo un primo esempio.
      Sarei uno sciocco a non capire che la natura del video per TH-cam sia completamente diversa rispetto alla trazidionale registrazione in studio... ma qui nella descrizione è indicato chiaramente come questa fosse la sua esecuzione dal vivo in occasione del 60esimo concorso Busoni.
      Ne deduco questo è il suo modo generale di suonare in pubblico: concentrarsi sull' apparenza per compiacere le masse, va molto di moda.
      Dedicare tanta concentrazione a questi movimenti inutili ed appariscenti (che, ad esser sincero non fanno far bella figura affatto) è sempre deleterio per l' esecuzione, specie per composizioni importanti come questa.
      Le assicuro che non ho ascoltato i primi 10 secondi e via.
      Consigliavo l' esecuzione di Siirala per fornirle un esempio d' esecuzione impeccabile, per il quale per quanto può cercare non si può trovare un video per scopi promozionali o commerciali.
      Ho posto Siirala come esempio in quanto è fra i pochi pianisti viventi che non dedica nemmeno un neurone, durante l' esecuzione, a come appare: si limita ad assumere una postura decorosa ed un' espressione impassibile, per non distrarre l' ascoltatore dagli straordinari traguardi musicali che ha ottenuto e di cui va tanto fiero.
      Non per nulla Siirala è profondamente rispettato anche dai maestri, non solo dai ragazzi.
      Avevo il piacere di consigliare ad un collega la retta via di far le cose, ormai spesso sottovalutata e le assicuro che non vi era alcuna malizia, ma avverto che forse lei abbia ormai le idee ben chiare sul proprio modo di apparire e sopratutto fare, quindi forse è meglio che non insista più.

      @@terryss95 Gentile Maestro, grazie per questi preziosi consigli: sarebbero ancor più graditi qualora non provenissero da un nickname, ma da un'identità palese e qualificata, come è la mia qui. Non avevo idea di questo "colpo di pistola", né me ne ricordavo: non ho mai più guardato questo video, né intendo farlo in futuro: mi mette ansia e mi ricorda la pena provata in quella esibizione, circondato da telecamere, in diretta mondiale (tale è uno streaming) e sotto l'orecchio giudice di una giuria. Non mi interessano i gesti che non siano funzionali alla resa delle articolazioni e dei fraseggi: tale è il mio pensiero oggi e la mia filosofia quando mi esibisco; "dedurre" da questo video del 2015 - realizzato in un certo contesto - come io suono "generalmente" in pubblico è un procedimento logico che mi lascia perplesso. Evidentemente, non si rifugge mai abbastanza dall'apparenza, tanto da evitare accuse di vacuità. Ah, le lacrime di gioia... me le potrò concedere nella cella in cui mediterò sul Qoelet o le potrò lasciar andare anche in un'esecuzione pubblica?

    Extremely impressive performance slaying a proverbial bete noire of the repertoire. At the same time I must iconoclastically ask, what is the musical point of this composition? Does it possess some kind of innate underlying beauty, a la the Bach Passacaglia in C Minor, that justifies the elephantiasis of its polyphony and pelion-on-ossa difficulties? Or does it exist merely as a one-upmanship demonstration of the maximum possible textural ingenuity and polydigital saturation for their own sake, without regard to underlying rigor or persuasiveness of any inherently distinctive musical ideas? I have found that every performance of this piece I've ever heard, no matter how accomplished and masterful, reveals it as boring and inert, for all its gestures of monumentality. It is composition for the sake of the piano, not composition for the sake of music.

      I totally understand how you feel. At first I felt this piece was way too boring and long for what it was, but one day I revisited it and fell in love.
      For me, the beauty is in the form: theme and variations, cadenza, and a fugue to top it off. Godowsky is just so masterful in taking this tiny idea and creating something bigger with it.
      The variations are delightfully creative and individual; he makes great use of harmony, voice leading, texture, and intensity to show this beautiful little melody in so many different lights. There are so many little moments that feel well crafted - those moments have stuck with me and make me want to listen to the whole piece just to reach them again.
      The fugue at the end is beautiful, I think it could honestly stand on its own - but it’s so fitting for this monster of a piece to have a complex fugue as its ending after more than 10 min!
      I know this piece can be hard for some audiences to sit through. To each their own, but I think it’s a true work of art in its own right, especially from a composition standpoint.

    La sua interpretazione è pregevole, malgrado le condizioni di estremo stress a cui era sottoposto. I frustrati che danno consigli su come dovrebbe interpretare la Passacaglia e che scrivono sciocchezze senza cognizione di causa, pressati da acrimonia viscerale, non sono neppure degni di pulirle le scarpe.

    I think it has been played unnecessarily fast, which unfortunately led to lack of clarity, unconcise voicing and an awful lot of mistakes :( Amazing technique nonetheless. Playing that piece is an accomplishment in itself

      I've heard Hamelin's early CBC cd studio recording ; and Scherbakov's Marco Polo studio recording ; and DeLucchi here is more impressive musically and technically, despite very few mistakes and despite live.Remarkable.

      The basic tempo for the theme is played at 100 to the quarter note, which is Godowsky's indication. Most of the other performances I've heard here are significantly slower.
