The inability to comprehend the importance of emotional intelligence and emotional maturity is a huge deficit, not a strength.
When one is open to the full range of emotions and the experience that brings them it allows us to successfully navigate and adapt our lives accordingly.

I think the first step is to explore the origins of the fear to face the self.
It likely began in childhood but it is essential to understand the toxic messages that result in denial and suppression of real emotions and experiences.
