It's pretty neat seeing Golden Book Video attempting something serious, compared to their usual kiddie fare (like the Little Golden Book classics, Richard Scarry, Mercer Mayer, Sesame Street, Pound Puppies, etc.)
I actually liked this more than the cartoon. The story was told more intelligent. The cartoon had better animation. As a kid, these stories were darker and deeper.
With how common motion comics are nowadays, this was honestly ahead of its time (even if there’s been similar animated storybooks on vhs). It may not be Filmation but it’s still really cool.
Someone at Filmation said “We can’t possibly make this any cheaper” and Golden Book Video said; “hold my beer!” I also see this couldn’t decide what canon to use
I feel like the writers of the Masters of the Universe Movie (1987) got some dialogue ideas from these books as there are some similarities. It could just be the a coincidence and the nature of the franchise but there are some lines that are almost word for word the same.

I don’t know if you’re old enough to know this, but the MOTU action figures came with a mini comic book and those stories were more serious in tone.
I had both this and the Golden Books ' Care Bears on VHS.
This is absolutely brilliant!!!! Wowowowowowow!!!!!!
I had this on vhs
Feels like the Marvel Superheroes hour, Eternia version.
I love the music on these, and the crappy animation for Battle Cat.
I had this on VHS as a kid, it always felt like a cheap version of the actual cartoon 😂
Same & same exact feeling
In some ways it’s better

I grew up in the 90's, but this was my older brother's tape. I just thought this was what the cartoon was lol.
Golden Book Video Killers brought Tomblappy and Zak Wolf here to the He-Man origins.
This was one of my favorite VHS growing up

The early canon was all over the place, they hadn’t figured it out yet
These are kind of cool, I preferred my books on tape as a kid though.
The sound effects were top notch
Apparently voiced in part by the amazing Don Messick!
I love the Golden Book Video series.

19:36 is that June Foray?
20:59 look out! she's break dancing for Australia!
He-Man’s voice sounds a bit like actor Iain Glen
