You’re also forgetting an important factor: size. A lion is more than four times larger than a hyena. The competition would be much different if they were the same size.
it does, but does not help them to kill male lions in a one to one encounter, it's not even one on one, without the lioness help she is likely to have escaped from him.
Cat's have evolved to have extremely loose skin. This allows them to break free from bites and the bite doesn't hit muscle or organs, just more skin. Pick up any house cat and you'll see what I mean.
For sure......always look within when struggling ...the answer lies there, if you have the honesty to seek it......no famous quote.... just my personal experinece
Perhaps you need to watch actual documentaries about male lions, and enlighten yourself. There are many famous coalitions that have been recorded, for your viewing. Look up the Mapogo Lions. Might do you some good to come out from under that rock.
My dad had the VHS tape and this literally felt like a movie when I was a kid about the battle between Lions and Hyenas, seeing this randomly now brings back memories of so many bygones it's ridiculously nostalgic! Amazing! Thanks for renewing the past! Lol
If you're into this subject, I once watched something about lion brothers who took on all the Lions in their area, killed them or run them off, and took on their prides, etc. They then expanded and did the same in the neighbouring area, they were unstoppable. Then one died, another split off from them and went to form his own pride. It left two... and they then met a younger group of lions, the same versions of themselves. You now watched them receiving what they had themselves served out. They were called the Mapogo lion coalition, and the documentary was called: Brothers in Blood: The Lions of the Sabi Sand Check it out.
I absolutely love his intro into the opening of the area being his "death zone" for all that he would catch. Just love seeing him look around like the head honcho. Totally badass. I love his stride. And at 0:26 when he looks over at it anticipating it's path, so gnarly.

@@alienator4684 The reproductive potential of the cackle lies mostly with the females. One male is usually more dispensable than one female. In this case the female also has extra genetic quality, the evidence being that she is apparently the matriarch. So any male that has a lot of genes in common with the victim here has a genetic reason to save the female at his own expense. The fact that that did not happen reveals the limited nature of my understanding of the subject.
@@markharwood7573 Wow, seems like you know a lot more about this than I do, thanks for sharing. I always knew the significance the females have to the clan but In that moment I just thought “Why would a Hyena want to get its own life taken just to save another?” Especially knowing the way the males are treated.
I was holding my breath when he shifted to 6th gear. His body just looked to be getting longer and longer. Anyone ever see that when their back feet start getting closer to the front with each leap. It's just amazing.
That’s what happens when your legs are well proportioned with your body. The hyenas front legs are longer than their back legs, so they’re not adjusted for speed. The hyena was screwed either way.
Totally agree when the lioness spun her out I thought she would get away, but big boy closed the gap and then he shifted to overdrive . That was pure power, knew instantly that hyena was dead meat.
Those other hyenas are watching and feeling really lucky that "they were determined to kill old Chuck...I always wanted to be Chuck...not so much now!" Hyena Ralph.
Yes. Instinct and knowledge are two very different things. Sometimes they're at odds with one another. For instance, humans crave sweet things, but in the modern world we know that most of those sweet things aren't really good for us but we eat them anyway due to instinct.
When a male lion joins in the hunt, it's usually in defence of his pride [family group] and or it's personal. Hyenas are vicious creatures. It probably had it coming.
It wasn't speed and endurance. Lions ( male & female) lack endurance, but this particular male lion had the advantage cos the hyena was probably tired from been chased by the female lion.
Still as majestic as the day I first saw this. Now that I’m older I’ve noticed that the Lioness did more damage than I thought with what seemed like a fairly small swipe to the back left leg of that Hyena. If you look carefully it seems like the Hyena isn’t properly using that back left leg at all after that. Maybe it’s because I was 10 when I saw this and didn’t quite understand the power of those beautiful beasts. I just thought that was a little swipe. This is very unique footage for so many reasons and I’m extremely grateful it still readily exists. Thank you for uploading it!
@@maamardli - Right? I was kid when I first saw this, so I definitely wasn’t paying close attention. You can see that back leg is not working properly at all after that first swipe. Not sure if it’s broken exactly, but it’s thoroughly damaged.

They don't have a choice......nature is very brutal..... This is why people admire the animals, eyes, brute force, because civilized humans don't have to do what they have to do to survive everyday Not personal, it's just business......hyenas get their share of lions too....
I don't think I've ever seen such a superb blend of beauty and power and grace as that exhibited by this lion. He is pure poetry in motion. His single-minded pursuit of the hyena is written in every line of his body, in the way he never swerves or slows or takes his eyes off his prey. Nothing is going to get in his way, nothing is going to stop him. He is magnificent.
0:32 Big cats always have this very cool way of ending a chase, involving using a toenail. They reach out and use a nail on a rear leg of the prey, and it slows them down and even makes them spin 180 or so, giving the cat a chance to pounce.
' Eternal Enemies : Lions and Hyenas ', a PBS documentary, one of the best ever, so much that I bought the VHS that time. Love the phrase, " Intwydemela , he who greets with fire ".
I don't know man , Hyena like to eat their prey alive while the lion at least put them out of their misery fast . Im pretty sure this is worthy of a bad reputation .
what part of the hyena's reputation is not deserved? they're skeevy scavengers, they routinely steal prey (that they couldn't catch) from actual predators who put in the work, all the while they cackle and scream like a horde of goblins. hyenas are awful, wretched creatures
@@stormbringer2840 There is tons of footage of lions eating their prey while it's still alive. All predators do this from time to time. An animal doesn't know anything about "putting something out of it's misery"...that's a human emotion/thought process. The animal(s) is just trying to make the kill. Sometimes this happens quickly, sometimes it doesn't.
@@TheCapedWanderer Hyenas are actually very capable predators. In fact... most of the animals they consume(over 70%) come from predation and not scavenging. The myth of Hyenas just being scavengers, was debunked decades ago. In fact... lions do more scavenging than hyenas. All predators scavenge, especially large ones like big cats, hyenas, bears, and wolves. If they have the physical size or large numbers, to drive other predators away from a kill, they will.

Male lions are just too big for one hyena's mouth to damage enough. On the other hand, once a male lion bites the hyena's neck, it's over quickly.

I remember when this show aired. This ending was awesome and the person/voice brought the intensity to this last scene.
They were called the Mapogo lion coalition, and the documentary was called:
Brothers in Blood: The Lions of the Sabi Sand
Check it out.

@JamesJetski Why would they?
Man your expression is great. You should definitely be libra.
That’s what happens when your legs are well proportioned with your body. The hyenas front legs are longer than their back legs, so they’re not adjusted for speed. The hyena was screwed either way.

Yes. Instinct and knowledge are two very different things. Sometimes they're at odds with one another. For instance, humans crave sweet things, but in the modern world we know that most of those sweet things aren't really good for us but we eat them anyway due to instinct.

Poor hyenas have a bad reputation, and truth be told they don't deserve it.
@@TheCapedWanderer also eat the animal alive, and that is some difficult stuff to watch! SMH
