Bronx public housing building has apartments as cold as 'igloos' and some hot as 'saunas'

  • Parkside Houses resident Elizabeth Nazario, whose New York City Housing Authority home is on the cold side of the spectrum, said she's had it. On the other side of the building, Victor Pagan's apartment is toasty. The wall thermometer in the Air Force veteran's bedroom read 74 degrees on Monday. Pagan feels guilty about complaining about the heat when so many are cold.

The reason for heat on one side of the building and not on the other is because of blockages in the steam distribution. Water or air is not allowing the steam to travel. That has nothing to do with the actual boilers as they are producing steam. This directly falls on the workers who are not maintaining the lines by clearing them. I'm almost 100 percent sure if you walk the basement/crawlspace you will find traps that have not been serviced in years

Sometimes they want to fix it the right way but they are told to cut corners to save money. The maintenance of public housing should be regulated better but I've seen federal and state workers pass inspections knowing many units have major problems like mold, insect and rodent infestations, water damage etc. I lived in one of the most well kept projects in Camden, NJ but the issues with maintenance was always the same.

It's helpful that affordable apartments are out here because this has helped a lot of families, but you have to maintain the apartments by making sure theirs adequate heat and hot water for people that live there. I said to them one person can’t call 311 and another 3 days later call again. I said no. Call the same day. They had no heat no hot water. As soon I said call the same day. I would check downstairs and make sure steam valves for each line of radiators is in open position. Next, you start going through apartments checking individual radiators. Could be steam traps are malfunctioning and not allowing radiators to get hot. Hot water one side of building but not another. Again get it the basement and check valves and make sure all are in on position. Agreed its odd Monica bundled up for arctic temps interviewing the woman in shorts and T-shirt.

Well, if you are cold, it's prob best not to sleep in shorts and t-shirt. That said, try long-johns, or sweats (pants and shirt) plus wear socks (it really does help). Also, window coverings make a huge difference... so bare windows, hot or cold, it's terrible. Even a putting up a blanket over the windows will drastically help with temp swings. Generally, if you want to warm up a room with a space heater... be very safe. One space heater connected to the wall outlet (not an extension cord), and be sure it's newer with overheat, thermometer, and tip-over safeties. Close all the doors and set it on medium (not high), and get one with a air forced (a fan) where it'll circulate the heat (vs ones that just heat rods or radiate surface heat). Air forced will get a 10x15 room relatively warm in about 15 mins.

Alot of people in these comments are so ignorant. Public housing doesn't automatically equal free rent. If you're on disability or on maternity leave then sure, but most people in the projects work and their rent is based off their income. For example when i was paying 545 a month my neighbor with the exact same apartment was paying 1200.

True and many of them have a minimum required income that ppl have to make to move in

So $645 of your rent was free.

I'm from NYC. This is why I refuse to move to the Bronx... and also infestation. What's crazy is the Bronx is the most dangerous borough and I'm fine with the danger. That's how real it is.

Now, people suffering like this is an outrage! The Mayor needs to jump in, and get on top of this! I don’t care, that these people live in housing. They pay rent every month and deserve better. This is America, one of the richest countries in the World! Yet, people who are paying their monthly rent can’t get heat! Where they do that at? I’m happy one of them tenant contacted the news, I would have did the exact same thing. I would have called Help Me Howard Quick fast in a NY minute. I would have wrote to
The mayor too! I don’t play that mess. My own apartment complex about to get rebuked for their foolishness all together.

In the winter my house is often just 55 degrees. That's what I can afford, the pipes won't burst and the animals won't freeze.. If I run the heat higher I cannot afford the bills.

I live in these projects and it's off and on with the heat. It's off on the coldest days when we need it the most and blazing hot on warm days when it should be off... Ass backwards!!!! Been like this for YEEEAAARRRSSS

LA winter shelters are around 40 degrees at night. They can't kill the poor outright, so they do it in installments.

Oh, believe me; I want to move out of this joke of a city. But I have family who are too elderly to move. So, I'm stuck here. The kicker is, I work for a company with offices and clients literally all over America. So, anywhere I move to, I can just transfer to another office. But again, stuck here.
