How To Change A LiPo Connector On A LiPo Battery Safely

- Wondering how to change a LiPo Connector? If so, here's my quick and safe method with tips to get the best results.
This example is shows changing the connector on a LiPo battery, which is usually the most difficult due to the high short protentional if you don't know what you're doing; but the same process would be followed if you have to change the LiPo connector on an ESC / similar.

Great video. Soldering is comforting for me. I switched from EC5 TO XT90. I pretty much do what you do, but i love the vise technique which i will adopt. 😊
Thanks for watching & happy soldering (yes, it's therapeutic for me as well). 🙂
Why would u go from ec5 to xt90 just curious? Cause I'm about to switch from xt90 to ec5 lol
@thomaswalton9089 i think they connect better and soldering is soo much easier...imho
@@edwinthomas618 I was going to change from xt90 because it's so hard to unplug them plus I just got like 10 used lipos and they are all ec5
You make it look so easy, I always watch your videos even though I'm no into RC hobby, there's always new tips I can pick up along the way.
Cool, thanks 👍
Hi dude, I was due to replace some gnb27 connectors with some a30 ones. They are infinitely smaller, but the same principle is used. Thanks for sharing! 😊
Thanks for the comment 👍🙂
Teknik solder yang sangat bagus, saya suka.
Very good video John, I have never seen it done like this.
Great video John - thank you.
Thanks for watching mate - happy flights! 🙂
and you pal@@Rchelicopterfun
Very nicely done and explained; thanks!
Glad you enjoyed it, thanks for watching 🙂
Good video.
Thanks for the visit
I just cut the connector shell and the bullet pins come right out.Than incert them into the connector you want I did this and it worked fine.
Put a temporary strip of kapton tape across the back of the cup before soldering then if you have any spillage it just runs off and won't stick. Also have you seen the QS8 connectors yet? They're basically an enlarged XT90.
This is one task that can totally ruin your day if you don't take your time and prevent a short at all costs. It happened to me once. The spark is bad enough, but the really dangerous part is if it welds itself to the other lead. If you can't rapidly separate them, it's like holding a hand grenade after you lost the pin and spoon. I was fortunate and was able to separate them but in that short time the battery became very hot, and one cell was smoked. I do like the new solderless connectors that have come out and have been converting my packs over. Either way, be extra careful.
Yes indeed!
Xt90 for the win!
👍🖖
Very interesting as always ! Where are you installing/using those new batteries?
@1983dmd. Question is what won't they be used in - haha. It's one of the most useful battery sizes in my opinion. I use 6S 5000's in every 550,600,700 & 800 heli I fly. Also use them in an 80mm Freewing Avanti S, 80mm E-flite F-16 & and E-flite Carbon Z Splendor.
@@Rchelicopterfun I was not aware you also fly airplanes !?!? Videos, videos please !!!
@@1983dmd Yep, learned to fly RC planes before helicopters way back in the mid 80's. I hadn't flown an RC plane in almost two decades however because I had no place to fly them here until I got our little airport certified with MAAC & the airport operator as a shared usage field. So I'm slowly getting back into fixed wing again. Helis are still the number one love of course, but I have to admit, I'm having a blast with the EDF's.
As for videos, unfortunately, with the new CARs 900 Transport Canada RPAS regulations which MAAC members are no longer exempt from; if I post a video of flying out at the field on TH-cam (heli or plane over 250g), it's now considered a commercial flying operation, and I would need a commercial RPAS advanced operating license which I'm not going to get (the hassle and cost is simply not worth it).
It's why I haven't had any flying videos since late last year when all the MAAC drama started, first being grounded by MAAC in December and then losing our TC exemptions in February. I'm just thankful I was able to get the airport re-certified for shared RC usage again in June.
Had to cancel some nice review opportunities this year; the OMP M4 & Align TB60 being two I'm most upset about. The OMP M7 which is on the horizon will be another one I'll have to pass on.
Would TC enforce this and fine me/revoke my basic certification if they saw one of my videos??? I honestly don't know, but I'm not going to chance it considering all the time and effort it took to get our little airport certified for RC usage. In fact, I'm even worried about existing flying videos on my channel I made before all this, but surely logic would prevail as they were all made when MAAC members were still exempt from TC's RPAS overreaching regulations.
@@Rchelicopterfun Thank you for your detailed explanation...Glad you at least got your airport re-certified...Aren't you happy to live in Canada, where great OPEN SPACES and unlimited HORIZONS are prevalent, from SEA to shining SEA, second only to Russia for land area...(No need to answer ...you get my point !!???;) You might hit a mosquito with your heli or jet....
And YES, TC will 100% get after you if you daaaaare to fly...Count on a zelous TH-camr to report you to another zealous TC employee....
Any R2 updates ? how are the parts holding up and are the seams starting to show cracks in the paint ? any events with the droid ?
No updates but hope to do one when I eventually get around to doing a weathering video; just having a hard time with that considering I like him clean, but no question, R2 doesn't look the part unless he is at least a little worn & dirty. Otherwise, he is still working 100% and looking the same with the exception of many of the blue 3mm LED's in the front Teeces logic lights failing and having to replace them all. In short, the one the thing I didn't do myself and purchased ready made to save time has turned out to be the one item that has caused the most issues - big surprise. I've also worn out one set of the TPU printed drive wheels so had to print out a new pair and fit them last month.
I have a cheap soldering iron i never soldered before it says 120v+25% 60 watt will that work for these connectors
Not enough power most likely.
Though you can plug ec5 into xt90 if you are lazy
Great video john on another note will you be changing to Edgetx
I don't really see any reason to at this time. I've got all my gear dialed in exactly the way I like, and introducing unknowns into a working system is something I avoid if/when possible.
Hi! I have an old lipo (going to trash)
And a new with not T plug
If i remove the T plug from the old one can i put the old lipo in "trash" if it dont have any plug just the cutted cable? Or should i put the other type plug on it what i dont need? - thanks!
You don't have to put any plug on the old/bad lipo, but you can't just put it in the trash. You have to first discharge it or it could be a fire hazard. After it's fully discharge, you then have to take it to a battery recycling facility or your local hobby shop if they accept spent LiPo's.
@@Rchelicopterfun thanks!
Just a heads up doing this does void your warranty I messaged gens ace just to be sure.
LiPo warranty??? Now there's a slippery slope in terms. 😄
You sound a lot like AVE, even the laugh.
