I can say I knew me when I was young, but very much appreciate your comment. The thing I wasn't able to put my finger on was the dichotomy of my personality though I could feel the shift between my heart and my intellect. I'm sure it would have made a difference if I could have found a way to use both at the same time, but we can't turn back time.

Heard this song in June, Alicia played it over and over again. She told me she heard this with my son. Didn't listen to the words. Now I understand. The burdens she had to carry were immense. And I let her, my son, their children, her family and SO MANY MORE. I do not understand why. But I do know I am to blame. I never believed I could miss someone so much. I do not know what really happened. Am not ready for that information. I just understand my part. There is nothing I can ever do to change it. I wish I could. I can forgive other's. I’ll never forget the moment where my close friends and I were sitting staring out into the city lights while this song was playing. We shared this silence that felt so profound and although no words were exchanged, we could all feel each other’s emotions. I know this is a more up beat song but every time I hear the chorus it reminds me of this moment and makes me want to cry. Not from sadness but just from the beauty in that moment. Seriously a great song and I know I’ll be coming back here to remind myself of that time.

Mine was Bill Watkins. We were both painfully shy but in art class our very wise teacher decided to put us together as partners on a project. Bill and I became very close friends but he always held back, and so did I.
I didn't know until after graduation that an acquaintance of mine told Bill that I had a boyfriend and that we laughed at him. That was completely untrue! I never had a boyfriend in HS, because I was in love with Bill! I was just too damn shy to tell him how I felt. That acquaintance was an evil person.
Bill joined the Marines and shipped overseas right after graduation. I was going to tell him how I really felt about him on the night we graduated, but he was already gone. 😭
I never saw him again.
I went to our 20 year class reunion hoping to find out what happened, but there was nothing. I seemed to be the only one who remembers that sweet, kind, talented artist who totally shared my obsession with Star Trek! His name was not on the list of our deceased classmates. I hope he's still around and found someone to love who deserves his kindness.

This is a great song that overcame tremendous odds to make it into my favorites. I love to dance and it's a great dance toon. I'd been dancing to it on the morning of April 30, 2021, twirling around my kitchen not even thinking about a broom knowing there was clean up to be done before Matthew Jackson called me.
I really am curious about the way that other people remember things. For me, I am there. I can see it and smell it and feel it and, well, remember each bit of minutia that makes the memory. The first time I ever heard this song it was May 4, 2018, sitting alone in the Outback Steak House on I55 in Jackson, Mississippi. I had just come from a ceremony for Millsaps College graduates and had just bought dinner for my daughter and her friend. She and her friend were slow to arrive to the restaurant and fast to leave, but that was OK. I remembered being young and just wanting to be with my friends doing young things. I did want to go with them; there was a party where there would be dancing, and I just love that. I knew other parents were going, and if she could get him to go, I knew my ex-husband would be there, so I well understood the turmoil she wanted to avoid.
For me, it was all fine to be sitting there alone waiting to pay the bill. In another time, my mother and Caitlin's Aunt Barbara would have been with me, but not by now. Barbara had a long illness that she succumbed to in December of that year and my mother couldn't leave her alone for the trip. They were there in spirit.
I was just thankful to be able to be there, in Jackson, at Caitlin's graduation. I'd been banned from the school in the fall of 2017 after persisting to get information about Caitlin's safety and because of circumstances beyond her control, at her request. It was a miserable and manipulated set of circumstances.
In all things where I have had occasion to task someone with a job, I have first learned about the job, and if applicable, done the job myself to see what was required in thought, time, and analysis. I am certain that anyone acquainted with me was seriously wondering what I was doing on my Facebook pages from March of 2017 through recently. I was learning and confirming; I was projecting, nothing more, nothing less, though my desire that we all live a safe existence is most real. I was never surprised when, after blocking everyone who I was acquainted with personally, and everyone else who had either become a "friend" or a commentor, to find that people had created fake names and knew information from there only because they had created a fake persona. It was alright when it was someone who actually had been a friend at one time or another and reached out in true friendship; it was not alright when I found that others and members of bar had visited there.
Sometimes, people just can't keep still. They say and do things either because they think you don't understand what they're saying, like the nickname Juantia, said with a knowing grim to the presiding judge in another case, or meeting the director of the movie over in Gulfport, or it is because they feel threatened. It was no surprise in 2017 when I received an email from some law firms involved for the defendants to a suit I was working on for the plaintiffs saying that they wanted to meet in chambers with the judge about something - that I had posted. They were losing and were surprised that I had gotten as far as I did after being associated by the man who originally brought the case forward had it teetering on defeat. And I was pressing them, on the record. If we were going to have this discussion, it would be on the record. I suppose one of them didn't think that I remembered his name appearing on a witness list as part of Dick Scruggs proof that he did not libel and slander my name by filing an NCM action against me almost two years after he had any real contact with me (as an aside, I'm also sure he didn't realize that I had dismissed my case for libel/slander because Dickie had admitted to my young daughter that he had done and said terrible things about me that weren't true and apologized, to her - not me - but she is all that really matters), and the other, well, I guess he just believed that I was "crazy" because, well, Dickie said so. When all else had failed they were throwing their "hail Mary" and threw in a few falsehoods. When there was no defense to my assertions as they were factual, it was time to pull out the old phrase, "her paranoid delusions". When you are looking at something that is a fake and call it a fake, and it is a fake, then you are neither paranoid nor delusional. I think they call that response "gaslighting" and it has no place in any arena. I later sent an email asking for an apology; I got a response - he refused and hoped I got mental help.
Suffice it to say, then, that by May 2018, I was overjoyed that the head of security for Millsaps said that I could attend and even book my room on property owned by the campus. You likely won't find much of 2017 in the Story of Songs, we'll see. Like the gentleman said of the Godfather movie, there are holes in the plot that only the book can fill in.
Back on May 4, 2018, I sat there, finishing my dessert and wine, listening to Wish I Knew You When I Was Young, wishing I was young so I could go to the dance and share more of Caitlin's life as the young adult she had become, and wishing someone really knew me and not what others said about me who do not know me. Today I listen and dance and like the song, though not the memories, not one bit at all.
