As we now know, Bei Bei was weaned at just 18 months old, just a couple of months after he and Mama had experienced a brief and traumatic separation following Bei's stomach surgery. This sweet Mama's boy was separated from Mama to prepare Mama to have a other cub. Bei's weaning was hurried along by staff (not at Mama's natural pace. The final separation was heartbreaking to watch, with lots of frantic pacing by both Mama and cub, much agonizing vocalizations from both. Bei checked for every possible opening back to.his old home, climbed walls and trees to.find his way.back to Mom. Every now and then I look up TH-cam videos of Bei Bei as a young cub. This one, especially reminded me of that heartbreaking time about a year ago, when Bei was forced to leave his Mom.

All pandas in the world are property of China. They are basically just "rented" out to various zoos. This is part of a partnership program with China. Part of the deal is that any cubs born will be sent to China when they reach the age of four. They will be put in acclimation and breeding programs and released in the wild. The program is working as they are no longer on the "endangered" list, but have been moved to the "vulnerable" list. We think it's heartbreaking that the cubs are separated from their mom's around 18-mos, but it's in their best interest as pandas are solidary animals, usually only seeking out the opposite sex at mating time, then separating. So, while sad, it's slowly teaching them to live on their own.
