If he was 70ish in ‘05, he was among the last kids to have had a childhood without sitcoms and a tv in the home. There’s something special about that narrow generation - his teenage and undergrad years would have seen the social changes that happened during 50’s post-war mass production and mass marketing. As a kid, those were my favorite kinds of cantankerous old folks - the ones whose worlds were shaped just by the people they knew, stories they read or heard on the radio, and weekend visits to the movies. It’s hard to explain what exactly made them different, but they seemed to understand that so much of our social construct was bullshit, like this video is saying. He reminds me of a few others I knew then, especially an elderly priest from Belfast. In my company (at least), he used different words to explain it 😂
Some people when younger are traumatised. They cannot get angry or run away. They close down as it is the only coping mechanism that works. Fight, flight or freeze response. If they freeze when older they will say the first thing that comes into their mind. True or false. They may experience guilt and shame afterwards. This will inevitably lead to low self esteem and depression.
"It is disturbing to find an important political figure who indulges freely both in lies and in bullshit. What is perhaps even more deeply disturbing is to discover an important segment of our population responding to so incorrigibly dishonest a person with such pervasively enthusiastic acceptance."

Reminds me a little of what Guy Debord touches on in his 'Comments on the Society of the Spectale' that he wrote in 1988.
