You can always add a bearing and a u-joint to the shock tower to get the steering shaft around it and free up space for the coil.
I was thinking the same
When i drill out holes after plasma cutting, I found out that using a die grinder to knock off the first layer saved so many drill bits. The plasma leaves a hardened layer which trashes drills!
Hey man. I just wanted to let you know that your craftsmanship, attention to detail, and overall skills are truly badass. I’m not a Toyota guy at all, I’m actually a Jeep guy, but I started seeing your shorts so I had to come to channel and watch and it’s incredible watching your videos. Very informative and just a joy to watch. Thanks man keep it up! You’ve got me hooked and I’ll definitely be telling my buddies about your work!
Heck yeah man welcome to the channel! And thank you!! I’m glad you enjoy the videos!!
I ran into the same issues on mine so I ended up building tube towers where the front lands in front of the steering box, that way it clears the shaft completely everywhere without having to notch the tower out 👌🏻
Awesome work!!! But that shock towers are hugeeeee. Lowkey wondering why not put fender and grille back on and build a tube chassis/cage inside of it and mount the shocks to tube chassis.
Hi , hang in there , you will get there , you have done a great job on this build . there's always something to fix that's why we do it .use a little oil on your drills and they wont catch as much .
I feel your pain, the days were you just can't seem to cut a break are the ones that make us better fabricators, keep up the great work, really like the content 👍
I respect the work you do. I would never have the patience
Not to criticize anything because just the plasma table work alone is so cool. Have you seen “Wings world” videos. How they tie in their shock mounts to the cage. Those brackets work great on the rear like for a TJ. Your cage would free up so much space. Your body panels would then Use clips on the cage. You are building a hybrid. Rule number 1 is always goto what the pro racers have used. Simple, easy to fix and it works. Nothing wrong with reverse engineering for your application.
Cut up to 1” from the top remove the whole back of the fender and you move the original fender up and forward
Austin, you can add a flange coupling to your steering shaft and rout the shaft through holes in the shock tower. The shock will get maximum clearance from shaft and the flange will allow disassembly while the back plate will add permanent structure. You can leave the gussets above and below the exposed steering shaft to protect it in a catastrophic shock failure.
School of hard knocks. The best school there is
That suspension tower looks like its just pain...
Not sure why shock hoops werent an option.
@@MG-sg2ci yeah that seems a better option
Please use the stock fenders! Cut them off and weld them back up higher?
Nice work Austin!
🙂 I think for build like this the unexpected problems are something normal. Keep up the good work!
Very true!! Thanks!
Recently discovered the channel and definitely enjoy watching you build. From the start, I was a bit surprised to see you fully weld your parts when you're still mocking things up. After seeing you have to do rework a few times now, I'm surprised to see that you still are fully welding, especially since you don't have all the parts in hand. Maybe there is some opportunity there? Either way, it's cool to see what you do! Thank you for the content!
The hammer selection! 😂😂😂
The claw hammer is life haha
might want to put another u joint (3) in the steering shaft with a cushion block to clear the shock mount... if that makes sense, looks like you have the room. BTW, love the work your doing!
Ahh you got the cart in front of the horse been there done that but sh!t happens. How ever that's how we learn keep up the good work.
Even though there are set backs i hope you are enjoying the build as much as i am. Im never going to build something like this but its a very cool project.
Btw ..got my hood lifts today for my 03 Taco! Let you know how the install goes!!
Thanks! Yes I am having a blast, although thinking about all the material and time I have wasted so far is depressing haha let me know how they go and leave a review on the website if you have a minute!!
I think it’s going to take way more than half and inch for the spring to clear that bracket. Is your brake a SWAG or home made?
why not full hydro ? so you avoid all those issues with the steering and the coilover tower.
Damn dude, nice work!
I always thought the jounce / bump stop on the shock was to prevent bottoming out the shock and destroying it, not to actually stop upward travel of the suspension. I think it is a last effort ot prevent shock damage. The bump stops on a truck (rubber or hydraulic) are to keep the axle from mashing into the frame and components. Ideally the shock should never use it's owm bumpstop. Think your original idea ws correct.
In the rock crawler world, the bump stop on the shock stops the chock travel during articulation like I explained
Good job man. Way to stick with it!
Maybe it will be a better solution for the steering shaft to go around?
It looks like a lot of work but for sure it will be worth it in the end!
Could you 'gooseneck' the top of the driver-side tower to provide clearance for the coil?
Looks Good! You might have to put another U joint in the steering to go around the tower. I've been wondering about the lower link bar tire clearance when you turn those big tires?
Nice work
Everyone I have ever watched set up suspension always sets it up at full bump that way you know there will never be an issues with hitting anything
You should just leave everything taced together untill you fully get everything in so it's easier to make adjustments and what not as you work and then once everything is in then go back and fully weld and paint everything
Great work
You need to go check out Fab Rats FJ truck build very similar
You my friend, have it upstairs
Id just build the driver's side strong like the passenger side and get another joint in the steering shaft.
You do amazing work bro 👍
Thank you so much 😀
What about an oversized hole in strut mount to accommodate the steering shaft. Clearances would be easier to achieve without all that bracing in the way. And it would be stronger.
Top!! From Italy 🇮🇹
You have incredible patience keep going the end will come there is aguy in Australia have a look at his guards and build channel is called designed not bought similar to what you do
For you to be upset it’s bad!! Lol I’d have prolly sold it by now.🤣
Can you make a bottom rear diffuser for a 8989-f150
Are you going to use a shock tower brace as the driver side is notched?
Y don’t you just make new fenders w/o removing your hard work? Is that an option or not? I don’t know anything about this stuff but I love what ur doing. 😊
Over the top 🙋♂
Badass
Clamp the vise down on the drill press already.
TH-cam algorithm comment 💪🏼💪🏼
Why don’t you do what a Miata does for bump stops? Look it up! It’s what I did on are soon to be LS powered Tacoma…
it's a slow motion plane crash 😅
