I really enjoyed this video... Shower, jacuzzi, paddle pool, bath 😂 😂 😂 Thank you Ruth! It makes me wonder if I have the right stuff regarding a med kit. 🤔
Honestly I think that the most important part of your med kit is YOU. As long as you have first aid training and can stay calm, you need surprisingly little equipment.
Ruth, I did this pass with a friend of mine who has done it loads of times. I had a severe heart condition, which was a worry, but i literally flew up this pass, it was a miracle! I would love to hike it with you, with this friend who is so experienced with the pass, let me know! Also may need to do some sort of ritual before we bead up!
There is a poem and quotes about the the journey being more important than the destination. The main things is you had experiences and camaraderie which something you always remember. Even though you got hurt you are still better off hiking and camping than not. I hope you will complete the pass in the future. Your youtubes are great. I feel like I am back in South Africa when I see them. Brilliant! Fantastic!
Thank you, Christopher! I agree with you completely. It's sometimes tough to make videos about the things that don't go right, but they really are just as important as the things that go perfectly.
Oh Ruth, this is such an emotional journey - I was completely drawn into it. Amazing and yet understandable that you want to go again and possibly ... again ... until you reach this damn pass!!! All the best. Robin
Thank you so much for the kind comment, Robin! It is so comforting to know that you understand how I am feeling about this pass. It has become a bit of an obsession!
Well done. On that third attempt, we were the morons you found at Cycad cave who thought we were at the base of Mnweni. While obviously bummed, you guys were super nice to us (Ruan still has your map I believe). You guys saved our bacon, so we're quite thankful that your third attempt didn't work out. Good luck for the next one
Ha ha ha ha ha! No worries, Marnus! I have gotten lost in the Drakensberg as well, and when you are visiting a new area it is easy to get turned around. I am really glad that we met you guys!
Upside. Without Ifidi pass you wouldn't have been mentioned by Dixie and I wouldn't have found your channel. I probably wouldn't have my backpack either. :D I mostly just hike normal stuff these days, but I spent my 20s attempting to do 14rs in Colorado. Had to turn back a few times and it was always the right decision. Mountaineering is hard. I've even carried a few off trail with injuries like yours off short day hiking trails. Those are always the best memories and make for the best stories.
Thanks Mark! I agree: Ifidi has actually given me so much more than I could have ever asked for, even without getting to the top. I'd love to see a video about your mountaineering experiences!
Your shoulder snapped, your ankle twisted and you hurt your knee OMG... This pass looks Super dope, reminds me of judges pass or was it Leslie that we used up mafadi ...glad the guys helped you out !!! Ifidi pass I'm coming for you soon wow !!! This looks amazing, looks steep too... Well done...maybe I'm the girl you've been waiting for to summit with lol ... Slippery much! Which boots do you use? I use Salomon's and hardly ever slip on rocks unless the ones with in river with fangae ..... Well done on HLAW feature ... Also made it... Watch out for #SkirtgirlHiker. I'm more on Insta though for my posts ....
Hi Lerato! Yeah, I read your section in the upcoming HLAW book and it was awesome! Well done! Next time I hike in the berg maybe we can organise to meet up? That would be so cool!
Hi Ruth just subscribed to your blog, supper chuffed with all the local info you provide. Just wondering why you use trail runners and not ankle supporting boots when going off trail. In all my walk abouts i have a general rule if i go off trail then trail runners are out just because there is no ankle support when walking over boulders and grass clumps its an accident waiting to happen, just my opinion. Keep up the spirit in attempting to complete your quest
Thanks Dusty! I used to wear boots for all of my hiking, and then switched to trail runners as I was struggling to find a boot that would accommodate my wide foot. I agree that off trail boots do provide more support and my ankles get less tired (especially on side slopes!) but I haven't noticed much difference between the 2 in terms of rolling my ankles (I have done that in both boots and trail runners). Now that I actually use trail runners for running, I often end up using my older pair for hiking as it is cheaper than buying boots. I might switch back to boots at some point though...
I look forward to watching attempt #4. Maybe will see you at the top some time.
Thanks! I hope we see each other at the top 😊

Where is that awesome campsite?
Fairly low down in the Ifidi valley 😅

@@RoughingItWithRuth That was 20 years ago. A camera would have been too heavy to carry. :) I don't get over to Colorado as much as I used to.
