    I started training now for my last 114km of the camino in Oktober. I agree. I couldnt walk much the last 3 month due to a nose surgery. I didnt get good air after it. After I started with 20km the first thing that happen my food nail got inflammation and i lost the nail. Never happen before on hikes. But I never walked 20 km only like 10km. So yes I agree, you learn all about food injuries and food care😂. I am 43.

    Thank you! I’m watching all your videos. I’ll be 72 when I walk in 2022. I’m in pretty good shape, but I plan on training steadily between now and then. I’ll be walking with a small group...6 ladies. The leader has walked the Camino a few times and is a wealth of information, but I still love watching and learning so I can be prepared for a beautiful experience.

      I’m walking in may 22. Will have my 70th birthday while I’m walking. Two friends joining me and we’ve opted for a tour company with a relaxed daily mileage …. We want it stress free (as possible) with time to ‘smell the roses ‘.

    Sandy you are SO spot on with this advice! I'm a personal trainer and I work with people who are going on trips like the Camino, the Inca Trail, etc., and those who commit to the longer journey (including pre-Camino training) enjoy it far more. Preparation is the key to a buen Camino!

      Thx Trailblazer, I'm 4 weeks away from walking Le Puys. Lots of hills lots of elevation , 750km worth, and so I'm doing my best to prepare. Thx for your kind comments and Buen Camino to you!

      @@trailblazerwellness Wonderful. My wife and I walked that route and it is so beautiful along the ocean. You will have a fantastic time. And yes I'm doing lots of walking, weight training and stretching - we have many 30km plus days so I need to get these old bones in shape!

    I’m at the airport, in Yerevan, heading to Paris. I’ll start walking, on my 67th birthday, July 21! No time to train, (as you’re suggesting), but I’ve been traveling overseas, since November 30. You do quite a bit of walking being a full time travel blogger. I’m retired and I have 60 days remaining on my EU visa. So, I’m going to take 59 days to complete the Camino. I’m counting on muscle memory from my time in the Air Force, my three times serving as a Peace Corps volunteer (twice after I turned 60), and my time as an AmeriCorps member, in Sitka, Alaska, during the COVID-19 pandemic. Thanks for your channel!

    Great video. And i couldn't agree more. I've done the del Norte from Bilbao to SDC, the Munich Camino to Luzern, CH and the first 300 of the Frances from St Jean to Burgos. And hopefully the Primitivo in August 2021. I always started training about 3 months in advance and building up. I found foot and balance ball excercises very helpful, as well as a good blister prevention concept (manage the weight, the right shoes, injinji sock liners and vaseline and a good quality socks) and training with the backpack you will wear along with your estimated kit. Training in the weather with the stuff you want to take is a great way to get familiar with your kit, its weaknesses and strengths and builds a bond with your kit ;-)

      Couldn't agree more Nathan. Amazing how many people struggle because they didn't train and how many think they will figure it out on the trail...200km in they are blistered and beaten. Hope more people prepare!

    Good advice. Walking with the pack you are going to use with weight is vital. The day you forget it's on your back is a great moment. Hills are always a challenge so except that. The distances you recommend are about what I do. Being retired gives you the time and I have enjoyed a LOT of audio books. I live in a National Park in the U.K. So I have no excuse.

    Thanks for this helpful video, Sandy. I like that you distinguish between older and younger walkers. The over 50 crowd can’t just wing it! :)

      Thx Tanya. I am surprised and disappointed quite frankly by how many people say you don't have to prep. I couldn't disagree more. And this goes for the young walkers too, they had so many blisters and twisted knees and were suffering it was sad. No one would think of running a marathon with training, well the Camino is a marathon! Any questions happy to help.

    Sandy, my wife and I have not walked the camino but have just viewed all of your videos. They are wonderful. Is there a way that I could contact you for a personal question? This relates to a difficult personal family loss and our potentially walking the camino. And to locating a specific location along the camino that would have tremendous meaning to us. Thank you. Daniel.

    I've started walking lately and
    deeply agree with what you're saying.
    I feel like I'm getting stronger.
    at present
    I walk more than 12 kilos every day.
    On weekends, it's 15 kilos.
    Now I'm going to start squats as you say.
    I really sympathize with the video. thanks for the good advice~~

    These videos are well timed, I'm hoping to walk this year and have been training for the last month or so. I've built up to 8k most days with a small day pack and getting used to using walking poles. Got my shoes worn in and even still have days where everything needs to rest. I'm going to add in those longer walks. Look forward to watching the rest of the series.

    It would be interesting to know how many people pull out of the pilgrimage. Due to physical or mental fatigue.

    • @seniorswalkingthecamino
      @seniorswalkingthecamino  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      It would be, also how many people just suffer because they didn't prepare physically. From what I saw it was the younger people that hurt the most - more blisters and other things because at the age you're thinking "800 km, no problem"

    • @maureenoshea5306
      @maureenoshea5306 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I've seen a lot of videos of young, relatively fit people suffering. I've been weight training with dumbbells, including squats and deadlifts, and back and arm work. Doing 10,000 to 15,000 steps per day for at least 4 years, and walk home from work uphill with my back pack. I back pack all my groceries home up hill. Will be 67 before I tackle the Camino in 2022, and I know I have to do a lot more prep to be able to do much longer distances everyday.
