I once saw Marvin "Smitty" Smith do this, too: Master Ed Thigpen here not minding the horrible, muffled 80's sounding kit (including a Richie Ring on the snare!), and still managing to swing the trio and solo with his always impeccable taste. That's a huge lesson already - particularly for pseudo-purists who complain about how Jazz drums are supposed to be tuned. RIP, Mr. Thigpen.
