  • Of course you would.
    If you don't care about quality, style or the vintage aesthetic, you can buy a mountain bike here: amzn.to/2BqV5Dl
    Recorded on 10/12/2016, just before I a) took a relaxed five-mile cruise, b) realized I was late for a meeting, c) sprinted all the way home as fast as I could pedal, d) got a call from the guy I was meeting telling me that he was going to be late, and e) met the guy and everything worked out great.

    $ for $ 80s-90s. Best bikes ever made. Especially the bikes made in Taiwan with Japanese components o_o

      I would add pre-1995 or so when aluminum became the frame material. Everybody is waking up to the superiority of steel and realizing that the minor weight reduction comes at a price. I have been picking up a few of these during the pandemic ( at higher prices of course but they are well worth it ). I have a Trek Antelope that needs painting, a beautiful Kona Lava Dome that seems to be a lot newer, a Specialized Hard Rock that was probably the last steel frame in that model and I have a Specialized Rockhopper that I have owned from new in 1996 ( its aluminum so the red headed step child ). I also bought a lovely Gary Fisher Alfresco for the wife. It's an odd one because it it very much a mountain bike except for 700c wheels and even they are a tight fight. I just put a pair of 700x47 tires on and the clearances are about a millimeter. It was clearly something like a Tassajara and they just moved the cantilever posts.
      I put fat road tires on them. AIR - the original bike suspension. I also try to track down close ratio cassettes - hard to find in 7 speed. I like to keep as much of the original running gear on them as possible. I don't like grip shifters but I live in South Florida and changer performance is not much of a concern. The only hills are landfills. At some point, I might widen the rear forks for a modern drive train but I need things to wear out before I go there.

    That is an older one. I just rebuilt 2 Trek 830's from the time when they crossed over to Taiwan. Decent bikes. My USA made Treks are a 930 and a 950. I also own an old Klein Pulse. Cool Vid man.

    I have had and still have Trek 820, 830 and 930 bikes. I never saw one without Quick releases before. I still like the ride of chromoly over aluminum and I have had high end Cannondale, Klien and Trek Aluminum frames. OK for climbing a long steep mountain I will want the lightest stiffest bike possible but for every day pot hole street riding chromoly is sweet.

    TREK frames are bulletproof!
    Update: I just found on Craigslist a 1988 TREK 830 in very nice condition for $30!!, Yes and it is that beautiful aqua/teal color. It's my size, too. This will go well with my '88 TREK 400.

    I've been using these old MTB's as commuter/tourers for many years. Currently I have a 1987 Trek 830 which replaced my 1998 Trek 520 Touring bike. Why? Because it's stronger, climbs hills better due to Sakae OvalTech chainrings (a licensed copy of Shimano's BioPace), and is just as comfortable on long rides as a typical touring bike. The OvalTech/BioPace is no gimmick. It's a hill killer, especially if you have a load in the panniers, or tired knees. It was not designed for road speed, but for torque and it works beautifully. I swapped out the steel bars and stem for alloy, as well as the seat post. Street tires of 1.5" work best for me. The axle spread is 41.5" like many tourers, and these old ones had touring type forks with tapered tubes and twin eyelets with rack bosses - just like a tourer. Later ones had the cheaper straight fork tubes that rode like bricks, which spawned the front shock craze. Two water bottle provisions with room for another. They really were heavy duty versions of the classic tourer.
    I try to find the tallest MTB's I can find to simulate a 59cm roadie in height (33" stand over) because the handling is better over distance and the frame is more absorptive. MTB's were fitted shorter for trails, so the taller ones are rare, but worth it. The old 830 was not the top-o-the -line, but it had excellent Shimano Deore shifters and decent enough brakes, and cro-moly frame tubes and forks.
    This is my second T-830. The first one I bought new in 1988 and rode for thirty years. Finally, the hanger snapped on a ride - I'm sure it was because I had the bike clamped in a mag trainer all that winter. I'll never do that again. Now that I'm 63, I've considered buying new, lighter wheels, but that might be a bit overboard for a bike that is maybe worth $100 tops.

    To get the speeds for the bike multiply the amount of chainrings in the back by how many are up front like your bike common mtb gearing in the 80s 6x3=18 speed

    That's a righteous steed my friend. By the way, that Sakae crankset is correctly pronounced, "Supa Kussom". And you are correct, the way you pronounced "Trek" is to draw it out, like "T--R--E--K". I know, I'm a Bike Genious, at least along the lines of how to say things. Enjoy the videos; would like to see some before-and-after vids, but maybe you just flip 'em like they are?

  • @errcoche

    Lovely bike. Really a touring bike with modified frame geometry and 26" wheels. The fork crown almost looks like a tandem fork and that would make sense because they were trying to find stronger components. I would probably change the bars for something alloy and more ergonomic for road use and track down some new gumwall fat road tires and of course change the pedals ( I am a clips guy ). I would have paid up to $200 for the thing myself. It's an American made Trek. That is worth something to me. The fit is different for road use. A large mountain frame is medium for road use.

    Vintage Treks are not good bikes, the hype surrounding them seems to be from the company's more recent popularity.
    Only $35 however? Yeah, that sounds like a good bit of short-term fun.

    • @puddingkatapult
      @puddingkatapult 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Why are they not good? Are vintage mtbs from other manufacturers like Peugeot, Bianchi, Specialized so much better?

    • @Metal-Possum
      @Metal-Possum 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well, Bianchi probably made better frames back in the day, from better quality materials. Specialized were frauds and just had Asia making them Ritchey clones. As for Peugeot, I don't have much to say about them, but to quote Charlie Kelly "They make good bikes, right?" Nobody really knows.

    • @puddingkatapult
      @puddingkatapult 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Which Bianchi steel mountainbikes do you think of? What about other brands like Alpinestars, Raleigh or Dancelli? For a layman it's quite difficult to find out if a frame is well-made. I have an early 90s Dancelli with a lugged steel frame. The paint pattern ist handpainted. It's like this, but in purple: bikejan.com/4354/dancelli/

      Alex. The old Trek 950 White Single track I just purchase and rode some miles is awesome. Fast. When I did my East coast Journey for a couple of years back in 94. I bought an 800 antelope Trek Frame that had upgraded gear on it. It was a parts component bike as I later discover years later. The Antelope built like a mountain bike for $350. Bought it and rode it over 3,000 miles. The frame is on the rack in my shop in excellent condition for the abuse it has took over the years. It's on the list for a rebuild.

    • @toddspinner8382
      @toddspinner8382 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Older Treks are good bikes. The amount of money you would pay for a lugged steel USA made frame and fork today would be a four figure bike easy. Many of the early Treks came with lugged Reynolds 531 frames or good True Temper steel. The mid 1990's 900 series mountain bikes even came with larger head tubes which they were an early adopter of and the early road bikes, touring bikes, the 900 series mountain bikes and even the 750/950 multi-tracks make good rides today. Many of the Bianchi's of the 80's and 90's were Taiwan made especially the mountain bikes. For each of the price points, vintage Treks make good riding bikes even today.
