Toshiyuki Atokawa (born 1968) began training at the Seidokaikan karate academy at age 19. He acquired his black belt after 21 months of study and won his first national championship within three-and-a-half years, thereby establishing himself as a young martial arts star. The following year, he used his aggressive, pushing style of combat to win Seidokaikan's inaugural Karate World Cup - a feat which designated him as the best karate competitor on the planet.
When Seidokaikan gave rise to the K-1 kickboxing organization in 1993, Atokawa was there from the beginning. Though his kickboxing accomplishments were less numerous than those in bare-knuckle competition, he made himself a part of the company's foundation and presented a deceptively difficult challenge for opponents. He co-headlined the first-ever K-1 show in March of the same year, and was hand-picked to compete in the initial K-1 World Grand Prix the following month. He's one of only two fighters to have competed in the company's heavyweight, light heavyweight (K-2) and middleweight (K-3) divisions.
Atokawa retired from competition in 1997 to focus on a career as a referee and instructor. In 2015, he left Seidokaikan to establish his own style - Shudokaikan. At the time of this posting, he is a three-time world karate champion.
