Join me on this whirlwind of an adventure where I buy new Ikea Helmers for my nail polish, struggle to put them together, organize and declutter a bunch of polishes, and then run into stocking issues lol

I use a helmer as a nightstand, some pieces click right in and some we used a rubber mallet. The drawers slide better with weight in them and with use, I promise it gets better. They also clean amazingly with a magic eraser. Keep the faith 😆

Use bar soap or silicon lube on drawer edges to help them slide more easily.
When I bought drawers for my makeup and nail polish I carried a few bottles with me and I tried first hahahaha

Oh goodness, poor you Kelli, this looked kind of stressful for you! I hope those pesky Helmers come back in stock soon. But thank you for keeping this all so real, it's great to see the struggles too rather than the pure perfection that a lot of content creators post, it makes us all feel better about ourselves 🙌🙃
I have had helmer cabinets for ages, they last extremely long and well and just work wonders for nail polish :) I think I've got about 14 of them for my nail polishes, but they store makeup really well too :D I've put these together so often I feel like I'm a pro at it :')

I have one Helmer for office/desk supplies and mine was an absolute nightmare to assemble as well, you're not alone!

I got an alex with 9 drawers from ikea and that's where most 😆 of my nail polish resides (I should probably get another one). I was hoping the helmers were gonna be perfect for you. Hopefully you can get more drawers soon! Looking forward to part 2 😁
i was seriously considering the Helmer after seeing so many ppl rave about that as polish storage. thanks for your honest review, will definitely stay away! haha. my other concern with storing in drawers is that it is hard to find the exact polish i want/need. i currently keep them in clear plastic polish boxes, each in its own happy little compartment. each box holds 48 polishes but they are like $23 a box and i now need another 2 boxes so that adds up.
I was waiting for something from ikea for so long! You can actually call them and they can look through there system and tell you when the next shipment is set to arrive to your closest store.

Yeah, that was a bad batch (mine was part of that batch, too!) I hope they're out of stock because they're restocking them with ones that have been adequately QC'd! I ended up going with Michaels new mobile chests that are part of their modular furniture line. I really like them, and actually made a desk with them! It's two mobile chests, two half cubes and the tabletop. I was looking forward to the wheels on the bottom of the chests cause I thought I could wheel it around and use it as a mani table for giving friends manis, but with the wheels it was a little under barstool height, and that's a no from me. Even without the wheels it's a little too tall, but without the half cubes it's too short, so I guess nothing's perfect xD

I have to say, there is absolutely no shame in using something until you can't anymore! It's better than tossing out perfectly good furniture like some people do. But, I know the feeling of things being an absolute mess 😅 It is not a good feeling at all and worse when people see it. But, like I said, no shame
I made the move to a couple of Helmers last year. I've been thinking about making my Kelli sticker into a magnet to use on one. I'm thinking indie brands should have magnets for these to label the drawers.

Most of them get donated but I let friends pick through them first and see if they want any haha!
I'm genuinely surprised you had such a hard time with the Helmers. I have three, including one that I picked up a couple weeks ago, and they were all a breeze to put together. I've had QC issues with other Ikea products in the past, but not with my Helmers. I also have a Melmer and between the two, I've found it to be so much easier to get in and out of the Helmer. The drawers just slide so much better, even when they're completely packed. I promise they're worth it
I got two and the first one prolly took me over an hour with a manual I found online with step by step instructions. The second one probably took less than 30 min 😂
Okay, finding out that my fave is also a horror fan was a really lovely surprise, so thank you for that, lol! My heart broke when the Orly drawer bottom gave out - did everyone survive the fall?
I'm thinking about updating my polish storage too. My brother in law is 3D printing me some of those like, 5 tier nail polish organizer things, and I'm thinking about putting them into a Billy bookcase, the one that's 11" deep and about 16" wide, but just shy of 80" tall. I'd be putting a door on it as well, because my cat likes to get into everything he possibly can. Thank you for sharing your very honest journey with the Helmers - I don't think I'll be pursuing those, lol.

Oh my gosh a 3D printed organizer sounds AWESOME! Thankfully all the polishes survived this wild journey 🤣 I did spill some cuticle oil but that's because I didn't realize the bottle was open LOL. I'm glad you enjoyed the vlog!!! ❤️
Organizing..and reorganization are easy to plan but hard to implement! Something always seems to go wrong and hold up progress. You are doing a good job staying patient and cannot wait to see part 2. You really should do random crazy 20 polish giveaways with all your throwaways. Make the winners pay shipping. As a nonrelevant aside you look so exotic and beautiful with your makeup on in videos. To see you makeup free startled me. You are a totally different type of beautiful without makeup! I'm not a weirdo just was surprised. I guess there's money to be made the 1st company comes up with competition for helmers and melmers? Have a great weekend 🦚
I so agree, if another competitor in the nail polish storage game came along with a high quality product, I would definitely consider spending money on different storage. I would definitely pay more if the quality was significantly better than the Helmer/Melmers. I think there are plenty of collectors who might feel the same.
I got my Helmers back in February and I pretty much agree with you. I had less trouble putting mine together than you did, but even so the drawers don't pull smoothly and the general quality just isn't really there. They work fine, and were by far the most affordable option I could find, but I'm less than impressed and when it's time to replace I'll probably spend the money to get something better quality. About your Helmers though: I've noticed a decline in quality of a lot of items like this in the past year. I think some companies switched to using less quality manufacturers to try to keep items in stock when the usual supply lines got backed up by the pandemic. That's just theory though.
I have 3 helmers and they work really well for me! It's nice to have organization like these, especially after it's already finished 😂

Plus you could use the old melmer outsides for fun storage cubes.
Me ex put together my Helmer. He did it quickly without complaint. That was 6 or 7 years ago and it is still in great shape.
I bought one about 6 months ago and still have not built it. I’ve got to get on that (you inspired me) but I wanted to swatch all my polishes on nail sticks first. That needs to be finished, too. By the way, I’ll take some of the polishes you’re decluttering off your hands! You know they never go bad and don’t harbor germs!
The Helmer situation looks so frustrating! So sorry! I have one that I bought last year and it was tedious to build but everything went together right and no stuck drawers. The drawers are strong packed with polish, the bottom won’t fall out for sure!

We had to wait 10 months for a Desk & just 1 Helmer to come back in stock for The Manshape's at-home office (last year when everyone had to work from home desks & Helmers were like gold dust 😭)
They are definitely going in & out of stock more frequently, so I hope you find one soon.
Best tip I have is to check the site at least once a day!
Unfortunately the White Helmer is the most popular colour.. The Grey seems to be available much more frequently 😂
It's too late now but with the size of your collection I'd have leaned towards getting multiple tall Alex drawers, simply because you have a large collection & they utilise the 'upwards space' iykwim?
I wish I could have the Alex drawers but I only have space for 2 Helmers & that's a super tight fit!
I need a 3rd because mine are overflowing but I have absolutely nowhere to put one & I have no 'upward space' because my Helmers have to live under somthing, so I just have to accept it 😂
Overall I think Helmers are great (once they've been put together - there's no getting around the fact that's a PITA) & YES - the did change the drawer design on Helmers at some point over the past.. 6 years or so?
I have 1 original & 1 new one.
They look identical but they are constructed differently & unfortunately I found the QC is lower on the newer ones.

The problem I have with my Helmers is that the side rails that hold the drawers up will decide to crash down when I have the drawer out "too far" - something this can be like a third out - but apart from that I kind of love them.

Those Helmers seemed very frustrating. I have a slaystation from impressions. It's amazing. The drawers slide so nice although it took FOREVER to put together. Also, their customer service is trash (coupon refund related, not product related).
I have one Helmer, and my experience with it is that I don’t totally love it. It arrived with dented panels, along with other QA issues. I assembled it anyway, and it still works but looks banged up on the sides. Yes, the drawers are perfect size wise for storing polish, but you have to put the bottles in and leave enough space to stick your hand in, because it’s a tight fit into the back of the drawer, and you can’t see anything that isn’t up front. Also, the bottles slide all over when opening/closing the drawers. Before the Helmer I had been storing my polish in stackable Rubbermaid baskets, which I’m still using for the bulk of my collection. The Helmer is storing my Zoya, Essie, Orly and other mainstream bottles along with supplies. The Rubbermaid baskets are still my preferred storage. So I will not be getting another Helmer! In theory they’re a great idea, but not so much in practice. I have 500+ bottles presently and the one Helmer plus the 8 Rubbermaid baskets is working for me for now.

This is so interesting. I have six of these helmers and put them all together myself. I haven't had any issues with the quality or the buildability. I am in Australia. But I would have thought that they would all be the same.
My hubby has even encouraged me to get more polish so he can make more helmers he finds it fun. I showed him this and he said there is defo a fault in the ones you received. Such a shame but hopefully the next one you get will be better. Also I stacked two of mine on top of each other if you decide to keep more polishes. Sooooo tempted to get the vans :0) xx

I don’t recall my husband having as hard of a time putting mine together. I vaguely recall seeing that Ikea was remaking a bunch of products earlier this year and I wonder if they changed the way helmers are made. I last ordered one in 2020.
What I hate about Helmer is the tabs that keep the drawer from falling out, which you already knew about. I can't see the polishes at the back. I don't want to disassemble it to turn the tabs back in. Mine was easy to assemble and works fine so you might have just gotten a bad batch. After I get new windows for the house, I'm going to put up an Alex because then I can store my Holo Taco boxes in the cabinet.
The only Ikea product I've had a problem assembling was my Hennes daybed. They had the holes drilled incorrectly in one spot so I had to fix it. That's my first Ikea piece and it was so expensive to have delivered but we didn't have an Ikea nearby then. I'm so glad I had the bring it to the room option because the back is so heavy!
Omg I am so sorry that you had such a hard time with putting your helmers together. I had had mine for so many years and I absolutely love them. However I do have to say that I believe they do change up the design on them. My dad bought me 1 for mothers day and one for Christmas and the design of both of them are slightly different but both worked well. I would definitely contact Ikea and let them know about any issues you had. You're making me want to redo my drawers.... um maybe after the holidays 😄. You could do grey or black and configure that to make a cool mosaic type pattern. It doesn’t have to me all the same colors. It could add an interesting point than just uniform same white?
The melmers you want to keep can have probably some thin pegboard cut for replacement drawer bottoms. I have the same problem with mine but just flipped the drawer bottoms over for now.
I find the Alex drawers from Ikea a lot better than the Helmers. Oh and I love your new shoes.
I managed to put a helmer together backwards so dont be mad at yourself, I had to take it all back apart and then re-read the destructions again, and yes I did say destructions because they sure were not instructions! I have four helmers and I do love them, they hold a lot of nail polish! you can stack the helmers on top of each other, I think you need more Helmers. they do last much longer as they are metal.

For my helmers (i had to get beige cause my ikea was also out of all the other colors), I skip the step with the tabs on the drawers so I can still pull them out. You have to be very careful not to pull them out too far and to avoid warping when you have it out. But for me its worth it so I can move them around.

I stopped buying furniture from IKEA when my sideboard decided to spectacularly fall apart after 2 years of use.

I felt your frustration right through the screen! 😢My nearest IKEA is over 3 hours away and in another state…not everyone has the luxury of stores close by. I’m so sorry for all the hassle you had over the Helmers😬 loved the vlog though 💅🏻and can’t wait for part 2 and possibly 3😉

Ugh I have 2 helmers I agree on the building frustration. I had to gorilla glue the arms the drawers slide on because they like to fall out if u pull it out too far. I wouldn't recommend them either the quality is ify.
My two were hard to put together too! They had to have changed them from what they originally were. The top drawer on one of mine does not open smoothly and is hard to get closed all the way
I didn't pop the tabs either. I also used shelf liner to keep the polish from sliding if I didn't fill the drawer. Sorry they gave you so much trouble!

The Helmers have went up in price. The white are $59 and gray and black are $69. I was looking at getting one at Christmas time. Guess I shouldn't have dragged my feet.
I have one Helmer and I actually called the customer service number when I was assembling it because I was having such a hard time. I ended up getting it together but the top of it doesn't connect to anything, it's just basically sitting on the Helmer like a hat. No idea what I did wrong. I'm almost at the point where I need a 2nd unit. I don't want mismatched storage pieces but DREAD buying another Helmer. 😫

I personally have an Alex unit and it survived my move great still living his best life but it’s full so i need to invest into something else too but i won’t buy an other alex i think they’re a bit too pricey, this requires much thinking and planning 😂

Why didn't you get the Alex cabinets? I think they are better and heavier and would be better able to handle the weight of the nail polish bottles.

I went through something similar with my makeup collection and Alex. It was a whole thing. I hope it takes less than two years for you to complete your project (mine had a global pandemic beginning thrown in for funsies).

I'd sell those Helmers on FB marketplace and go back for the Alex drawers!
The Alex drawers would have a lot of wasted space for nail polishes since the drawers are not all the same depths, the bottom drawers are deeper which she wouldn't need.
Oh God the last time I ordered IKEA furniture I paid for the delivery and for them to put it together. Not because I didn't want to break my nails, but because I have no skill and no patience for this!
How do you remember all of the colors/effects you have with them in drawers? If I don't see mine I wont use them

I'd return those and get the Alex. Have several and they are sturdy and stable. Metal is always problematic.
I've got an Alex drawer for my makeup but it's just SO heavy for moving (and also too expensive to build multiple haha)
I do really believe the Alex are bigger I just put my modest china glaze, OPI, Essie and ilnp collection and they even fit in the small ones
I wonder if they changed the Helmer. Mine were never this difficult to put together. I wonder if c*vid has somehow effected the production or something? Mine were always decently easy to put together. But it's been a couple of years since I needed a new one.

It's such a struggle to find a good method for storing! I mean overall I'm pleased with the Helmer since it seems pretty sturdy but oh man, the assembly was a real nightmare!!
Depending on how much nail polish you have, I recommend the Opaque Modular Stackable Drawers from The Container Store. They fit taller polishes like Orlys easily and you can "buy as you go." The taller drawer also can fit acetone bottles.

I'm not sure when you filmed this, but I just checked the South Philly location and apparently they have 67 of the white ones in stock?? (Double checked, they don't have either black or gray so it seems like it's only white there). Not sure how far that is from wherever you are in NJ.
My nail polish is in the plastic drawer part of those stacking shelves. Literally just the drawer 😂 I would love to find good wall storage so they could hang. ALSO r.e. the last vlog where you talked about reading, I read House of Hollow and loved it. I think you would really like Wilder Girls if you haven't read it.

Toothpicks and wood glue will allow you to tighten loose screws.
When I decided to update to drawers and get a ton of polishes out of the wall amount and boxes they were in, I just got Alex drawers because I like the look of the Helmers, but I knew I’d need too many. Right now I have 2 tall Alex 9-drawers And a wide 6 drawer Alex. Next one, because let’s be honest I will get more polishes with time, will probably be a tall 9 drawer Alex.
My dear lord I would have hit my breaking point so many times here. When the ikea drawers weren’t fitting, omg when that bottom drawer just broke from the front. And then when the bottom fell out of one of the drawers I would have SCREAMED AND STORMED AWAY. And been done and than you went through like seven more frustrating things! Kudos to you.
LOL I was definitely struggling but I knew I would be rewarding myself with delicious beef stew when I was done so I powered through 😂😂😂

I only have one Helmer but it was sooo annoying to build, especially the first part with the sides. It does work better full that is true. I also used a dry bar of soap and glided it over the sliders of the drawers so they move easier. Thank God I got it on sale otherwise I think it is expensive for what it is considering you have to build it yourself.
I also keep an excel file with the names of the polishes and in which drawer they are placed. But I am already out of space. 😬
If someone magically started manufacturing excellent quality storage units that held 500 polishes, world you consider replacing your current storage? How much would you pay per unit? Just curious after reading all the comments in this video. There's obviously flaws with the Helmer/Melmers and I think there's enough collectors in the world to warrant a new option!

I actually never liked the Helmers.. I think Alex drawers (or similar) work wayyyy better for nail polish, much sturdier.
