The view of downtown at 1:30 is like looking at an alternate, heavily depopulated, reality! There's the 8th Street police station on the right... and ZERO visible skyscrapers! Just bizarre to look at considering how every square inch of those spaces is now filled with buildings. Wow.
Austin wasn't meant to grow so much IMO. Now it's full of hipsters, movie stars and apartments that cost 2k a month to rent. So many of the small charming landmarks are gone.
Always the city council and hippie culture that held Austin road infrastructure back. All the federal money for roads that was given to Austin was rejected and ended up going to San Antonio, Houston.
Also at @0:13. I'm guessing that would be either 183 Research Blvd or 290 Ben White in those days pre-freeway. That's My guess til a local confirms it from that time.
Wow. Could you imagine how nice Austin could've been if they revolved the city around people instead of a tool? 60% of all and space in Austin is now either a road, parking lot, or drive way. 60% of city space designed around something that sits in a parking spot 99% of the day. Where is the logic in that?!
Glad to know we sorted all that out with progressive Democratic leadership. Also, nipped that homelessness problem and affordable living in the bud. Thanks, Dem voters.
I've been in Austin sense 1971. The cashiers at Gibsons used to say yell come back now ya hear. Now Gibsons is gone. We used to sit on the front porch and people waved as they went bye. Not anymore. They used to have a city ordinance called the capital corridor. No building could be tall enough to block the capital view. The liberals came in and changed it and now there are ugly sky scrapers all over town. East Austin used to be where the black people lived. The liberals took it over and raised the taxes so families that lived there for over a 100 years where forced out. If where not for governor Abbott we would still have homeless encampment under every bridge. This used to be a beautiful city. Now it is a big ugly highway. If this is progress I will pass on it.
all i can say for the planning back in '83 is "not even close".
Even in the 80s traffic was still a joke. Yeah this news aged perfectly to today's austin standards.

Building toll roads didn't help

Unfortunately my man you are correct. Sickening for the real Austinites..
In Austin? Traffic is still horrible.
Still planning I see I do like 71 and 183 expansion though
Still sucks hell its worse than ever
Looks like a bunch of antiques on the road, I remember all the exhaust. LOL

Talking a lot of shit for the only good city Poland...I mean, Texas (with Abbott taking away right, it's hard to tell) ... has to offer.
