Yeah it is hard to catch it when it's the first time you hear the song, but if you listen to the full song a few times and go back to re-watch the concert you will notice the bad singing and several mistakes on the instruments too.
Yeah, when I was first watching the episode, I actually noticed when the drums suddenly started going a bit off beat. Maybe it's because my ears are used to looking for it because of playing rhythm games. It's a nice detail.
The thing is though, for the first episode 8 performance, it's not a placebo. The band playing actually makes mistakes. I suggest listening to the to the full youtube version, then listening to the episode performance again. In the first few measures, you can hear the guitar rushing the melody and then the bass coming in late. You can hear the lack of cohesion in the band. The most noticeable thing for me is that Kita's voice starts to crack towards the end as well. The animation team took the time to record the poor performance version.
The band name: 結束バンド (kessoku bando) is how you write zip tie in Japanese. In addition to "tying things together" (as is the intention with the zip tie use), the kanji kessoku means "unity". And the katakana "bando" is the Japanese rendition of the English word "band", both for the kind of item used to tie things together (again, the intention with zip tie), and for a music band (as it's used here). So it's a pun of "zip tie" and "unity band". So when Seika (Nijika's sister) says "they need to change the band name" it's her calling out their lack of _unity._
Several rewatches later, one detail I really love is that Bocchi's original fans from the street performance are there without fail to see her play, standing right in the front and always digging the show.
Episode 8 is what started the Bocchi hype, especially in Japan. A day before this episode was aired the volume 5 of the manga was released and on it included a special chapter featuring Nijika & Seika's back story. Ilts a standalone chapter tie-in for episode 8. I guess the author anticipated that people would wonder why Nijika's dream is very important to her and her sister. I suggest you read it as soon as possible while your impression of episode 8 is still fresh,
The Bocchi hype was already there after few episodes in actually. Mostly because the creativity in animation, especially in ep 4. The hype was also there because people were already started comparing the directing style between Bocchi the Rock vs Chainsaw Man (the most anticipated show last season). And then episode 5 kicked in to hype it even more. And then episode 8 was what make Bocchi the Rock became anime of the year contender, and as you said, chapter 61 dropped around that time is what made it even more special.
@@gonoki888 I would really agree with this. Early in the season it was slept on a little, but really hyped up by those watching it. By about mid season it’s popularity was becoming widespread and people were beginning to realize there was something really special. Episode 8 with that concert was what really made it surpass Chainsaw Man and Bleach as anime of the season, and by the end of the season it had become a serious anime of the year contender. And while the creativity in animation and storytelling is a big part of that, it’s not just that; it’s that just about everyone who watches it, whether they have experience with music or not, whether they’re introverted or extroverted - everyone who watches this show relates to it in one way or another. Most anime aren’t capable of pulling that kind of relatability off, and that’s what truly makes this series so special.
I'm impressed that you managed to tune the songs in a way to leave the full length in the video. Most of the youtubers I watched just cropped it and muted a lot. Thank you for this ^o^
That might be favourite reaction series for this show since you do have musicial background and you share a lot of your insight and knowledge which is rly appreciated. Can't wait for other episodes ^^
In fact, all of the songs in the show were recorded for LIVE scenes, with the 1st song intentionally shifting the rhythm and singing with poor breath control. Naturally, these were recorded by professionals, so the 2nd song is perfect that it's hard to believe that this is a beginners band! tips: Kessoku = unity, cohesion Kessoku Band = cable tie / a unified band
More like the directors intentionally forced a performance while the performers were completely unprepared. They still did too good in my opinion, live performances tend to be even more ass than this.
@@Raidenze from the interviews released, they actually asked the performers to play with that incongruity that it felt out of sync without being way too obvious or like that, the way they expressed how they made the performances is they were closely asking them to do some things and using their body language and all to express things, like for example, i saw some that knew about playing bass, how Ryo would do some slides into air that they commonly would do, or nijika marking the tempo with her leg, or stuff like that, they put a ton of care into each and every performance
You might consider wrapping up with ep 11-12 together. They kinda run right into each other. While 10 is more standalone. That being said, you will certainly have a lot more to say about the finale.
And there are already a video comparing ep06 street performance and ep08 concert. Kikuri and Ryo played distinct bass lines according to different circumstances.
I could feel the enthusiasm the production team had for this piece when they played it so poorly for the first time at the LIVE. Moreover, the balance was good, and the running and fill misses were not deliberate. The performance was well executed to the extent that it felt uncomfortable. The sense of incongruity was well expressed. And I think it is understandable that the audience would have that kind of atmosphere if they were playing opposite a band. The reaction of the audience, who were less interested in their own show and more interested in the next band, was very realistic.
Interesting points you brought up about the live performances not being perfect. I think many professional performances rarely are 100% perfect, however what is an important concept to grasp as one advances in their musical career is how to quickly improvise when mistakes inevitably happen. As seen in future episodes of this show.
The first song they've played. I didn't notice the first time watching, but it was off timing. After listening to the album version, this version hurts my ears. It's great characterisation. The lyrics even match what is going on. Kita sang "its not enough" while the crowd was disinterested for example.
"Kessoku Band" is a pun on the Japanese term for a zip tie, they actually sold branded zip ties as merch for the series lol (or was it as a bonus item for the CD album? I personally didn't get any bonus items because I ordered from a store that didn't have them)
The, "Not bad," comment may sound like an understatement, but remember that Kesoku Band aren't the only band playing that night, and the girls are there because they're fans of a different band. Getting a "not bad" from them is actually a big win. The, "That's the wrong show," comment when Bocchi has turned to ash in the izakaya/pub refers to her pose. In the most famous scene of the boxing manga, Ashita no Jo, has the main character Jo looking exactly like that after a fight.
Keep up the good work Jhulian!, you're really breaking these down these episodes good, noticing bocchi's courage increasing and other different things! Like last time, appreciate the good work!
