I’m in the uk and brought my 3 children out of school and home educating it’s been life changing for them and us as a family 👌🏼
This is so wonderful. This is my 6th year homeschooling my kiddos but I still am constantly unwarping my way of thinking because of my public school education. I feel like I’m failing my kids if we are not getting in all the “subjects” but our goal is for them to be successful in LIFE.

The more I hear more about homeschooling the more I want to do it. My brother excelled at school. He is brilliant and is a scientist today. But the school couldn’t keep up with him. He would get in trouble because he was so bored. My parents ended up having to put him in college classes and high school in 10th grade.
Me on the other hand was like you. I wasn’t bad at school, but I needed more attention than I was given. I was also to timid too speak up and say slow down I don’t get it yet! I excelled in college when I had control over my education. I graduated with honors there.

This!!!!!!! I know at the end is OUR decision but it gets tiresome when family members have so many opinions on homeschooling, punishing kids, oblígate kids to share toys with other kids.
You know what I do? My father in law is super judgy, stuck in his ways thinks he knows everything. So when I switched to gentle parenting, I also went and got my coaching certification. I wanted to really immerse myself in that and understand childhood trauma and the human brain and nervous system, which also helped me understand my father-in-law SO MUCH MORE when he does and says things I now understand where it comes from, why he feels that way, what's happening in his brain and body that he doesn't even understand what's going on. So I have educated myself on so much and when I do things like taking all artificial dyes out of my kids food and gentle parenting, he always makes comments, and I ALWAYS snap back with the facts, statistics, and proof, and that ALWAYS shuts him down. I will not defend or argue about something I'm not confident about. A lot of times, that opinion they have isn't even their opinion. It's been ingrained in the brain by their parents, society, and environment and isn't backed by any fact or authentic reason.
My mother n law tells everyone now how she was not onboard at first and was very skeptical fast forward 13 years of doing this she rants and raves about them! 🎉
Why does your family and in laws need to agree? They don't. Let them think what they want. Don't talk about it.
Hello. I'm a homeschool mom here and married to a traditional family who very much looks down on homeschooling. Regardless of what it may be, in this case, homeschooling, I would recommend making a list to why you want to homeschool. Use that list to remind you during hard times why you are doing what you're doing. Along with this, be committed and consistent in teaching your child. For me, it's not about making my child smart, but enabling them with values, principles, and character. If you can bring your child up in a positive way, doesn't matter what others think, they will see the child's growth. Similar to my husband, he sees the purpose in all this. But it took him 2 years. Hope all goes well for you. You will do a fantastic job!!!

Both of you so eloquently put into words what's in my mind and heart in regards to my desires of why I want to homeschool my kids. I feel so inadequate but want them to experience so much more than what public school is offering them. You have given me confidence to go for it and to not be fearful.
As someone who homeschooled or home educated if you will, who has been a substitute in California , who even went as far as the credential program, who studied every alternative education method I could find, who knows the concepts of Gatto...all this is true. Amazing how well explained this is. American schools raise followers and slaves, unless you as a parent or teachers intervene. Best podcast yet Ellen. Bravo to you both!
Love this conversation. I was the one that it all came easy for a academically in school but left school with really no understanding of who I was or what I wanted to do with my life and I don’t want that for my kids. I still don’t know if I’ve fully discovered who I am to my core and that’s my hope for them that they follow what they love to do naturally and know who they are and what they want!
I loved this conversation! My daughter is about to turn 5 so she'll be starting homeschool this year. I work nights 6-7 days/week so we'll be doing home education during the day. Such a nice conversation to get me pumped for homeschooling and to remember why I want to do this in the first place! The school system is indeed failing our youth.
Living in Sweden 🇸🇪 and we are not allowed to homeschool. I am a soon to be teacher/educator and I am dreading for the day when my three year old is going to be away long days and being told to obey. Will have to move to another country, and that’s seriously a idea of mine. But I am so happy to be in the system to make a small change. Thank you for this topic!

If you want the privilege, you have to take the responsibility.
Institutionalization starts in school, not prison.

This was much needed. Thank you for giving me the confidence to look towards this for my teenager. I was so terrified that I would mess up by homeschooling her. She's so talented, she's an artist and she's learning a second language on her own. She attended school for 10 hours a day. My heart has been desiring to teach my daughter.

Loving this conversation! As a student I was homeschooled, went to private school, and went to public school. I did work after graduation that I hated. Took me years (and a lot of wasted money on a degree I don’t use) to finally be doing what I love! Also good inspiration to draw upon as we homeschool our kids. Thank you so much for this episode! I have an 11 month old son and I’ve been thinking so much about this topic of homeschooling him in the future. It scares me because I want to give him the best life and sometimes I doubt that I’m capable of giving him the best education possible. But this really opened my eyes and made it seem so doable! I will definitely be home educating him and maybe even connecting with some other mamas who are interested in the same & try to build a network!

Regarding your comment about playing the piano as a child and you were not interested so your Mom didn’t force or challenge you to continue and you wish she did so you could be a skilled pianist without having to learn it now as an adult. Well I think your Mom did the right thing but remember we are life long learners especially if you are interested in it now then playing and learning the piano now is the perfect time. Today with having the internet at our disposal we can learn anything our heart desires.

Ellen when I first saw one of your homeschool videos I instantly knew I would homeschool my son. It was the board game episode. My son loves to make board games. My son is 7 never been in school and we're loving homeschool. It can be hard for sure but wouldn't change it

I want to homeschool but it’s so hard when everyone tells me I’m going to make him antisocial and I feel like I’m not good enough to teach him 😢
This is such an awesome convo already (only about 30 mins in). I love the diversity on your podcast and how much I have learned. I have wanted to homeschool but i feel so unequipped and that i would do a disservice to my kids because I have no knowledge of how to school. I did okay in school as well but i don't think it was because i particularly enjoyed it, more because i had it figured out, like Matt said. And two of my kids are in middle and high school and are actually in great programs. But my youngest will be going into kindergarden and I am truely worried about his experience. Worried that he will not have an amazing human as his teacher. And also the cost that comes with homeschooling, having to pay for those extracurricular activities. Really i would love nothing more than to disconnect from society, travel, and live off the land.
I'm so with you on all this! There is so much fear around leaving the public/private school system and doing your own thing. Especially if the kids are already used to the school system, it would be such a change for them. Then the fear or worry that you made the wrong choice!

I really love this conversation, but it is frustrating for me here in Germany because it's mandatory for the kids to go to school. If you don't send your kids to public/privat schools your kids are taken away from you... we sadly don't have the option of home schooling... It would be amazing to know your thoughts on how to deal with this school system.
Hi Ellen! Loved this! I am definitely you in school. Got C’s and D’s and barely graduated. I like to think i am street smart not book smart. I hated being labeled by LETTERS of the alphabet or GPA for getting into college. I also am having a hard time with my membership. I had my credit card expire but that creates my account being canceled? Is my account gone and my passed convos in the threads? Hoping it didn’t. Sad :( but if not it’s ok I will just re enter my same personal info and pfp!

I am so impressed. It is so wonderful what you are doing with your kids, Ellen. Unfortunately, here in Germany it is forbidden to homeschool. That would mean I should immigrate to another country , like USA or sth. But my english skills are not so perfect to teach everything in english at home. Its Hard to see my kids growing in the System. But what I can do is not to give them the preassure to need to have good grades and observe them and find their strenght and develope it in this Theme.
I wish my family could also grow up in Hawaii and have the close nature life like your kids. But it is harder for someone to make that big change than it seems.
Try your Best & focus on what you can do !!
I know a German family who came to the UK so that the daughter could be home-educated. The mother knew very little English, the dad was still not quite fluent, and the daughter spoke no English at all. As far as I know, they spoke German at home but took her to home-ed gatherings and events where she was, of course, immersed in English. She has largely taught herself at home using resources on the Internet and is now taking her GCSEs.
I don't know how old your kids are, but likely they will pick up English quite quickly, especially if they can live in a home-ed community like the German girl has and I as well. There are lots of different ways to home-educate/homeschool. I wish you and your family all the best, and I hope you find a way that suits both you and your children.
Du kannst es schaffen! Here in the US, many of our top performing university students are second-generation Asian-American kids, whose parents are often not fluent in English. If you have the drive and decent curriculum, your students will thrive. And you can learn alongside them as well - I’ve learned more history teaching my third grader than I did in 10+ years of public school.
Homeschooling is not working for my daughter 😕 I work part time, split shifts and every homeschool group I've found (all of them in our area) have social activities during my working hours, or an activity too far away or expensive. My daughter is so bored, but next year she's doing a cyber school with many more social options. I still get to have her home with me while she learns but I won't have spend money I don't have in order for her meet kids.
As a teacher, it’s not like when we were in school. There is a lot of inquiry and flexibility and the model is so different now! I suppose some parts of the old model are similar. I’m not sure what it’s like in the US
A year later but YES! I am listening to some of the things being described as "good" and thinking I am surrounded by these in public education- socratic method, inquiry and wondering/questioning, the growing of citizenship and independent life skills, increasing choice....

Yes you can have your kids not do video games and spend times with other kids, my kids do all the time. We don’t do video games at my house. They are not interested and we explain to them why we don’t and they are okay with that. It’s doable! I grew up the same way and turned out just fine. We can have balances on other things but not this for us. They are so busy with their books and the outdoors that they don’t care, they are very outdoorsy
How do we see one of these schools?
I’m a new mother with a 9 month old baby girl! I already know homeschooling is in our future (especially since we don’t vaccin@te at all) but hearing podcasts like this really affirm what I already have in my heart for the future of my children. I was the same way as your sister where I got all As without studying but after graduation college and having immense debt to pay, I don’t even want to enter the work force. It’s the stay at home mommy life for me and my husband loves that too. ❤
I also want to add that since I was a top student in my school it was always said that I would be working in the medical field! I even did a few semesters in bio-med because I was doing what was expected of me. If my children genuinely want that for themselves then I would be so proud but to me it’s just as noble to be a janitor as it is to be a brain surgeon if that’s what brings passion and joy

I am proud of you for choosing to not v@ccin@te and homeschool. I am doing the same for my one year old. She is healthier than any of her friends and has never had more than a stuffy nose. I pray more people will stop poisoning their children and become aware of the agendas behind big ph@rma.

Thanks for sharing this. I thought this was really quite good and insightful. There was a couple areas that I would like more information on that weren’t covered. I think that it is important to also show the negative sides of home education. There are unfortunately plenty of people who homeschool their kids and really don’t take any action or have a very low level of structure and motivation to teach. Unfortunately, these people are teaching their kids that very low discipline, and very low motivation is what they need without even realizing it. There are plenty of lazy parents, and it really needs to be emphasized that discipline, structure, self motivation, and love are part of the journey of homeschooling. A kind of free-for-all and get out of bed when you want to, shower when you want etc. etc. does not work. I know they didn’t say that in the message and what they brought in the message was very positive. If it can be done right then it can be a very, very good thing. The only other red flag I had was about not paying taxes. When someone tells me that you don’t have to pay taxes because you just playing a game is a little concerning. I wish he would’ve expanded more on that even though I know that wasn’t the subject of today’s discussion. Reporting my income is an honest thing to do and paying taxes helps provide for the community in certain ways. Is it all good and all what I want to do? No. But a lot of it is used in infrastructure, emergency services, and social services that I am happy to contribute to. Overall, thank you very much for the discussion.

Or how about we collectively as parents put pressure on elected officials to properly fund schools instead of individualizing public problem solutions? Or who do you think is supposed to keep up a decently working economy if all women (mostly) or men stay home to school their own children? Should I raise my daughters to also become sahm homeschooling their children? Is this a never ending cycle of raising girls to stay at home to do something a well funded and modernized school system could do a thousand times better?
Great comment! There are schools doing some AMAZING things and more can do them better with appropriate support. It is sad that we pull away from public schools as opposed to supporting them in being better.

Matt has a lot of interesting insights but the notion that learning to read is a natural process for all like walking has been completely debunked. I was sad to hear him spreading this as fact. Parents who choose home based education should know the process for learning to read and that it is NOT easy for some and will require significant support.

@@theellenfisherpodcast yeah, but I live and work in this system and If I ask to the kids to rise their hand before speaking isn't because I want to trasform them into sheep; it's simply beacuse one day they will live in a world with rules (and yeah,the rules aren't always bad) and they'll be able to menage them just beacuse they'll be used to deal with It and If you're a good teacher and a good student, this refine the critical spirit. There's no one conspiracy behind it...Just good manners.
