Turbo Views #29: video review of "Bonk 3: Bonk's Big Adventure" for the TurboGrafx 16 (TurboChip AND Super CD) / Turbo Duo video-game system.
Rating: 4 out of 5
Released in 1993.
@megaboomface That's a good way to put it, yeah. All three are good games. But, they do tend to follow that pattern. Ha ha. :)
Thanks for watching!
Thanks for watching!
Ha, are there even 15 sports games on the Turbo? LOL!
I've done some really bad games and some average games. We'll get them all eventually....... :)
@123doomdoom It's not a bad game overall. Little disappointing but I still really liked it (wasn't as disappointing as, say, Super Air Zonk). Thanks for watching as always! :)
I think it is, truthfully. The third one is a TAD too expensive. So, if you buy the system, that one might not be as easy to track-down. The other two are readily available and totally worth. In my opinion, of course. :)
Hey, thanks for watching!
@AliceinNirvanagarden Yeah, definitely. Hmm...who stole who? :)
Thanks for watching!
Yes but it is the final game on the TurboGrafx, the entire reason for the show to exist. :)
Thanks for watching!
@mistertitanic Ha ha. Well, I do appreciate it. I try to be very detailed in my reviews so that even if someone doesn't agree with me....you can at least see where I am coming from (and hopefully make a decision as to whether it would be a game you would like nor not). You know? Thanks again for watching!
We've got Blazing Lazers coming up soon. Then we'll hit on the others eventually. :)
Thanks for watching!
After watching your videos of Bonk's Adventure, Bonk's Revenge and Bonk 3, I just had to buy one of them, so I bought Bonk's Revenge on the Wii Virtual Console. I enjoy it, but I think they should have given Bonk the ability to boost his walking speed temporarily -- like Sonic's spin dash or Wario's running-forward tackle when you press B. When there are falling objects, like the lava drops, you can't move out of the way in a hurry. Other than that, I have no complaints. For $6 I feel like I got way more than my money's worth, and it's so much fun! I grew up in the 16-bit era, so playing this makes me feel like a kid again.
Like what?
Ha ha. Yeah. SIGH! Stupid spelling errors! :)
Yes, I used to play the first Super NES one. It's fun! :)
Thanks for watching!!
@RPSteve LOL! Poor Bonk! Ha ha. Thanks for watching and commenting!
I used to play this every Sunday morning for 6 months straight, from beginning to end. One of my all-time favorites.
@c0ldb33r Ha ha! Glad you got it! :)
Thanks for watching!
I have heard about the new Bonk game. I saw a few pics but never any footage. I will have to check it out....
'Thanks for watching!
I use nothing but the original game / CD on the original systems. So, I have no way to "rip" anything unless there is a music-test that I can access. Otherwise, I have to find crafty ways to record the music as I capture the footage into my camcorder (like, standing still at the beginning of a stage, or if the music plays while in "pause," mode, etc.).
Ugh! Sometimes it's a pain in the you-know-what... :)
I miss the Bonk series :(
@BHFanaticoSiljak Do you mean the "Gate of Thunder" 3-in-1 (with Bonk's Revenge and Adventure on it?)
@iwantbeerdamnit Fantastic! I hope you like it.!! :) Thanks for watching!
Yes, you can. The CD games can be played in a regular CD player (and that is how I snag the music from the CD and Super CD games, for the most part, I just plop them in my DVD player and record some tracks). I was talking primarily the "chip" versions of the games that are a pain-in-the-$*# sometimes. :)
I liked the first Super Bonk. Never got to play any of the others. I was glad to see it carry over, though...you know? To continue it on.
Thanks for watching!
Hey Chris, is Super Bonk for the snes a port of this game? or is it another sequel altogether? Do you recommend that game too?
These reviews are really professionally done, seriously!!
Hey, awesome! Thanks for watching!
@TornadoCreator Cool. I'm glad you enjoy it so much. Thanks for watching!
Funny you should mention that. Super Bonk on SNES was also my first Bonk game. I never really got to play any of the original Bonks until they came out for Wii's Virtual Console. The gameplay on Bonk 3 seems to have a lot in common with Super Bonk.
Hey, thanks for watching!!!
@mistertitanic Thanks for watching! :)
Yeah.....why don't ya'? LOL! :)
Hey, thanks so much for watching and for the compliments! :)
@TheImportGamer93 Hey, thanks my friend. I truly appreciate it. Have a great one!
Now that everyone has told me about it....so am I. LOL! :)
thanks for watching!
@KidRondeau Thanks so much!!
@TheMathius78 Thanks my friend!! Hopefully when we get to 50 reviews....someday. :)
There were so few of us. Ha ha! :)
Thanks for watching!
Hmm. That could be huh? That's a great series to. Love the DS! :)
Thanks for watching!
Thanks for watching and the compliments. I'm so glad you enjoy them! :)
@gothhydran Thanks for watching!
I played "bonk" weirdly called B.C kid on the amiga version in 91-92 and loved it. Then I found out that it was initially called P.c kid and was made for the pc engine. I downloaded bonk 3 last week hoping it might be "B.c kid"...It was!! Can I just say i wish europe had the Pc engine/turbo graphics, the graphics are sublime and the sound pretty impressive, infact I can't believe this was 8bit! why wasn't it marketed in britain? Why did we miss out on soo many classics
I know a couple of my friends who were into the "Turbo" did not either. :(
Thanks for watching!
Yeah, definitely an interesting change. :) Thanks for watching!
Hey awesome. Thanks for watching!!
The setting strangely deviates from the prehistoric theme, Bonk goes through all kinds of random levels without much explanation, like modern day cities and warehouses?
The second one just.......rules. Hee hee!!!!
And you're right, the good news is that BR is MUCH cheaper. So, more people can play it (which isn't a bad thing at all). :)
Thanks for watching!
thanks for describing the diff between the cd and hu-card music. i was wondering what the diffs were
Gunhed/Blazing Lazers is my all time fav shooter!! Did you know it isn't actually part of the Star Soldier series? It was originally going to be called an Aleste game but they changed it to GunHed after a contract with the co-release film makers in 1989. Super Aleste for the SNES was the true sequel to GunHed... Have a look at it and you'll see the similarities!
Ha! Definitely! :)
Thanks!
@Khold90 Hey, thanks Khold! I'm so glad you enjoy the reviews! I needed this......after a couple negative comments in a row, a nice one is much appreciated . Ha ha. :)
Thanks again!
I noted that the victory screen in Bonk Volleyball says "Gongratulation" instead of "Congratulations". I saw that on 7:58.
Also, the size-changing candies returns in Super Bonk on the SNES.
Yes, that would have been great. A little more "uniqueness" and design would have really helped this one. I still enjoy it though. You know?
Thanks for watching!
Ha. Okay.....
Thanks for watching.
Another awesome review Chris.
I must say I don't have this one in my collection and its been years since I've played it so....thanks for bringing back some cherished memories!
Really? Cool. How was it on there?
@naikanomtom Thanks a lot my friend. I'm glad you enjoyed it! Means a lot! :)
I was going to do two different reviews. But, there just wasn't enough different to talk about. You know? And truthfully, I would choose the chip because it "feels" more like a Bonk game to me....but, in the end, if the Super CD was only available, that one is good too. Hee hee.
Thanks! :)
Well I will definitely check it out. Thanks!
Well, thanks so much. And, you're a great subscriber. Thanks for watching and being a friend. :)
Sweet!!
Bonk 1 and 2 you will have NO trouble finding. A lot of times you can snag a Turbo on Ebay with those two games specifically often packaged with it. You know?
Thanks a lot!
Nossa me sinto um bebê perto de vocês, vocês são das antigas.
Hey, thanks a lot! I felt the same way. I still really liked it (as you can tell, hee hee). But.....it didn't quite blow me away. :)
thanks for watching!
haha. Yeah, the Family Guy reference was definitely chuckle-worthy.
You're totally right though about the plain graphics on stage one. Pretty unimpressive first impressions. heh
Yeah, unless there's a music test getting cart music without ripping it out of the rom (or using a download of the music rip, if Turbografx ones are available) would be quite annoying, for sure.
On Super Bonk, the second one was the final game in the series for many years, and unfortunately because Hudson closed its US offices in mid 1995 it was only released in Japan. Until Hudson came back in 2003 we only got stuff publishers here wanted to bring over, which meant mostly just Bomberman. :(
Enjoy your reviews. I bought bonk 1 and 2 when they were originally released back in the day, didn't get the 3rd one until a few years ago. I was disappointed too, it didn't have enough innovation. Looking forward to the next gen release.
Thanks for the review! I still have my old TG16 w/CD system and recently dicided to look for some old games to play. I use to rent Bonks Revenge when I was a kid and finally bought it cheap from Amazon recently. Never played the 3rd one but I'm definatly going to look hard for the card version.
It's a tough one to find for a reasonable price. But, if you're a fan of Bonk, I'd say worth it. You know?
There are times I really love and prefer the "music and sounds" of the non-CD stuff (though I am a fan of redbook audio music). I loved piecing together the music tracks for the DVD, mostly for that reason. You know? I definitely have a soft spot for it. :)
I know. I feel the same. Hee hee.
Thanks for watching!
Yeah, I agree. I love this series though. Brings back SO many memories. You know?
Thanks for watching. As always! :)
Yeah, good editions to the Bonk series even if they are way too easy. The two player mode is fun because I always like to Bonk my friends.
Same thing happened on the NEO GEO at the end of its life. Game makers started cycling backgounds in from older games, but they would leave out interesting animations or proper color saturation, making it seem dull.
I played Super Bonk a few times a LONG time ago. If I remember correctly, it uses the "candy" thing as well (so, it has a lot of Bonk 3 elements). But, it also stood out on its own I believe.
I would type in Bonk Compendium into Google. He has a great list of them all!
Thanks a lot!!!
Another freakin fantastic review from the gameroom master himself. 2 thumbs up Chris!
I waited weeks for this to come out in August '93, it was released a few weeks before I went back to school. Great game, I just wish the level design better accomodated the giant Bonk power up.
Blazing Lazers. My favorite. Can't wait. :)
Another incredible review from one of my favourite reviewers. You know, I don't have a TG16, but your incredible videos make me sit here and wonder "why the fuck DON'T I have one?"
Believe it or not, I actually got inspired to draw something based on the candy in this game!
Now I use it when I want to (mostly the blue one, but the red one also has a chance).
The first and second time I used this concept was in two of my Stella and Luna drawings, where the first one shows the effect of the red candy on Luna, while the second one makes Stella grow after eating the blue candy.
I like the concept, and I should pick the Bonk games up on the Virtual Console!
Cheers,
SF
@Khold90 Ha ha. Well, thanks....I appreciate it. I try not to take any of it seriously. You know? 99.9% of the time those people aren't subscribers or friends anyway (and most of them have nothing of any value on TH-cam to even compare). It's you guys that matter. :)
Thanks again!
I played the first Super NES version and remember thinking it was pretty good. Otherwise, no....I haven't. I'll check the site out. Thanks!!
I Also Heard That Bonk 3 Is The Last TurboChip Game Ever To Be Released In August Of '93 After Magical Chase Was In July Before The Turbo Was Ended In 94, The Year I Was Born In. And The Super CD Format Of It Was The Last As Well Also. Was The Super CD Version After Dynastic Hero Or Somethin'? Or Was It Super Air Zonk? I Dunno.
There's A Forth Game In The Series, Super Bonk But Only On Super Nintendo. The First Bonk Game On A Nintendo Console. The Thing With Sonic, And The Two Splatterhouse Sequels On The Genesis. I Hope You Can Review The Game One Day With Called TurboView Specials, When The Series Of Games On The Turbo Ended Up On Other Consoles Toward Or During The End Of The Turbo's Life Cycle.
Awesome review!!!! :D Its a shame.. as I still haven't got any of the Bonk (PC Genjin) games :( This will definitely make me do it!!
@RPSteve Yeah, it's nice that all the Bonk games are available (I had someone comment about that once when they read my "titles" for the reviews which have Wii in the title if they are available). Off hand I cannot really remember how many stages are on BR.....I might have mentioned that in the review. Ha. Did it so long ago. LOL. :)
Great review. I totally agree. I have the CD version. I liked Bonk's Revenge best though.
I Downloaded Bonk 3 (TurboChip) Yesterday On VC And I Finished It Already The Same With Revenge Without Using A Continue. I Wish I Could Try The CD Version.
I heard that somewhere. Does it look fun?
Honestly, this is my favourite Bonk. Sure it wasn't as inventive as Bonk's Revenge, but it didn't need to be. It took the best parts from Bonk's Revenge (the exploring etc), changed some things back to Bonk's Adventure (the juggling) and added 2 Player and the transforming candy. I say this is the definitive Bonk game.
Yeah, I know what you mean. I was a little harder on B3, it's still a great game (hence why I gave it a 4/5 and rounded up a bit). But....some of the recycled stuff could have been toned down. hee hee. :)
Kind of strange that they didn't put mroe extra's on the CD version, you'd expect that during that time. But that might also be a good thing though...
Looks like fun, even though the second seemed more expansive, it still looks like a lot of fun to play it. Bonk's Revenge is probably a lot cheaper to get a hold of though...
I have a little showcase of my collection coming up as I "pack them away" for the move. So, we'll do a few pinball vids in the future. Nothing as elaborate as my reviews. But, hopefully you'll find them interesting.
Thanks for the friendship!
Bonk certainly seems like a cool character, and this game does look quite cool. ...By the way, did you take a look at the new Bonk game? ...I'm starting to worry, based on the footage I saw.
Another awesome video I love the Bonk series.
seen a lot of your videos and i really like how much informative its since you cover everything related to the game , also you have a great voice keep up the good work . subbed
@spida1a Thanks to you, (which I only discovered a few days ago) I have already purchased 3 new Turbografx 16 games.
Hey, spida1a I love your turbo reviews man! I've been looking for this game for this game for sometime now and you have BOTH versions, lucky you! but keep it up!
Definitely!!!!!! :)
o piece candy o piece of candy o piece of candy haha gotta love james woods refrence.
1:32 "and BONK His way to victory".. and he bonks. Lol. awesome :)
3:48 LOL.. Ooh Piece of candy. XD Family guy, too, haha..
Another great review.
I've got the first two. I'd love to get this one but the price is too steep. Have to hope to find it locally for a bargin. Excellent vid :)
LOL! I am SO glad people caught the candy reference. Or else.....yeah....I would sound like an idiot pretty much! Ha ha!
the first time i meet this guy was on my Amiga but there it called B.C. Kid
very good review
@spida1a thanks! lastly, how do super bonk 1 and 2 for Snes/SFC measure up?
If there is a "chip" in the slot when you turn the console on, the game will default to the chip. So, the chip version would start up. :)
@kenbefound You know, honestly.......I have no idea which version it is. Can someone help out? Thanks!
