This is RSPB Bempton Cliffs and it’s one of my favourite places to visit. Here, I can watch gannets vie for the best nest sites, razorbills lay eggs on precarious cliff faces and kittiwakes’ welcome tiny fluffy chicks. I’ll be following the wildlife through the changing seasons and meeting up with the RSPB to see how they monitor their progress here.

ABOUT THIS FILM

RSPB Bempton Cliffs
This is RSPB Bempton Cliffs and it’s one of my favourite places to visit. It’s located on the Yorkshire coast and is a renowned seabird haven. Spectacular chalk cliffs house thousands of nesting seabirds, including puffins, guillemots, gannets, and razorbills.
Spring
Spring has arrived, and with that, the seabirds are back. It’s known as ‘seabird city’ and it’s the largest mainland sea bird colony in the UK. Around half a million birds gather here between March and October to breed and nest on these towering chalk cliffs.
And this is my favourite part of the reserve, Staple Newk. It’s a spectacular chalk arch jutting out into the sea. I can spend hours here watching the seabirds all swirling around in great masses. And it’s the best place to watch the gannets.
Gannets
Gannets have a distinctive courtship ritual, tapping their bills together and preening. They mate for life and return to the same nest site each year to renew their bond. But space is at a premium here which sometimes causes conflict. Quite often the females are guarding the nest and the males are collecting nesting material with some cheekily stealing from unguarded nests.
Razorbills
Also on the ledges are razorbills, with their distinctive black and white plumage and thick black beak. This is a courting pair in what’s known as the 'ecstatic' pose, where one bird raises its beak, while its mate preens its throat. These birds are monogamous, pairing up with the same partner for life. Razorbills lay a single egg once a year, often right on the cliff edge.
Puffins
With the sun going down, I get a glimpse of one of the birds this area is famous for - puffins. I’ve got some puffins flying now! Look at that, they’re just landed right on the edge of the cliff. Look at them, so inquisitive, I just love puffins.
Meeting Poppy from the RSPB
It’s mid-June and the breeding season is in full swing. I’m here to meet Poppy from the RSPB find out how they monitor the birds here. Poppy and the team record new eggs and chicks on the nests to check productivity rates. The information gathered by Poppy and the RSPB team helps them understand any changes in the population. But thankfully each person only has a small area of cliff to study.
Guillemot Chicks
I spot a guillemot with a little chick underneath it. It's a very precarious little life for these chicks living on these little rock ledges. This chick will stay with its mum until it’s about 3 weeks old when it will leap from the cliffs into the water.

My heart sank a bit when Poppy said "volunteer". All these important jobs of monitoring wildlife health deserve to be government-funded. It's great that we have people willing to devote their time to efforts like this unpaid, but I wish they didn't have to do so.
Volunteer doesn't automatically mean unfunded or unsupported, the royal in their name isn't there just for aesthetics. While the RSPB is a charity organization they do have their supporters. They probably do work with the government ensuring conservation sites and supporting laws that benefit the wildlife. As a charity they probably qualify for some form of tax relief as well meaning more of their funds can be directed toward conservation. The nature of their mission means that they probably have periods during the year where there is a surge of activity so bringing in volunteers helps them meet their responsibility with having a bureaucratic glut the same amount of employees would create. The answer to everything isn't government programs.
Poppy works for the RSPB but like many people she is passionate about wildlife and the monitoring she does as volunteer
It’s not a bad thing it shows people care and are willing to help where they can,
to me it shows good character in someone Many of the volunteers are retired and it gives them a real sense of purpose and pride
Think of everything I do and have done for nature putting up hundreds of nest boxes taking care of injured animals and getting them back in the wild, I do it because I love what I do and like to make a difference not because of money
@@RobertEFullerOh Robert, we do appreciate all you do!! Thank you!! ❤

Thank you so much for all that you do. Your work brings a greater appreciation to humans of their fellow earth dwellers, the wildlife.
Oh thanks I’m lucky enough to have this amazing place just 40 minutes away from where I live
My goodness, those eggs were definitely in a precarious place! I'm glad there are viewing platforms, so Robert isn't hanging by his heels from a cliff. Incredible video!
When I used to go there as a kid there was no viewing platforms or fences and we crept to the edge of the 400 foot cliff to watch the birds
A bit safer nowadays and still as enjoyable
Thanks Robert and all RSPB Bempton Cliffs volunteers, it is great you take films and share how wonderful the world is with many different creatures. I've to respect all creatures' life and hope they can live well with us

🍃❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️🍃
😍😘😘😘😘😘😘😘😘😘
They are a wonderful sight and i have been to Bempton cliffs, but some of the reasons for sea birds struggling are over fishing (the next time you have fish and chips think of the birds having to fly far greater distances to find a meal) and the seas warming due to climate change,
Yes things are changing for sure
The good news is gannet population has grown massively over my lifetime and the kittiwakes seemed to be doing okay but there numbers have dropped over the past few decades there was more when I used to go as a teenager
Great place to visit can't wait till next year . Some wonderful footage Robert 👍
thank you for amazing videos!
Robert, Thank you for taking the time and effort to create such a remarkable video, with the detailed narrative and written comments. Which lens were you using to capture these masterful images?
There's a playlist on this channel called "My Camera Equipment" which should detail all that.
Thanks the video is a credit to my team too Will edit this one
We used the 200-600 Sony lens mainly to get these shots, also the wider shots were the Sony 100-400
Gannet (Live-action Scuttle)
Puffin (Mighty Sven)
Seagull (Mine-mine-mine or Cartoon Scuttle)
Robert, your should bring your fork (Dinglehopper) to them to style their hairs
I can't believe those birds breed on bare rocks and hatch chicks
Ils ne sont pas si différents de nous ces coquins !!!!!!
What was the effects this year following the bird flu outbreak?
the counts for this year won’t be in yet. But this is the latest: www.thescarboroughnews.co.uk/news/environment/rspb-reserve-near-bridlington-reports-suspected-outbreak-of-bird-flu-after-rapid-increase-of-bird-deaths-at-the-site-4225383
I can't even imagine wanting to raise a chick so close to the cliffs. One wrong move and they'll take a tumble!
Most disgusting disgraceful movie : The birds( Hitchcock). I LOVE BIRDS, they are ALL wonderful!!!! ❤❤❤❤
I did not see the drama …
👍👏👏👏👏💯‼️🏆✨🏆🌟
Thanks.🥰🥀🌿
God's Creation🙏
