How much vw paid for you? 🤣 4 seats, pop outs, less space than kia, phone holder instead of screen, slower than kia, less fun to drive, but no 5/5 it’s a vw 🤣🤣🤣
Yeah dont even get me started on the difference between the reliability of the two. I dont think the up will make it past 150k km without its engine or gearbox crapping out, while the picanto will easily double or triple that.
I agree with the verdict apart from almost everything. Kia 7 year warranty, side windows rolling up and down in the back, adjustable headrests in the front seats, better drive.....how the eff can you say that the UP is the one you want?..... I've driven both for many miles, and the Kia is better in so many ways.
I kind of sensed it from the start, badge snobness wins...People buying these cars are sensible and looking for practicality, comfort, reliability and peace of mind. So Kia wins all day long. Even the Dacia should have been there as well, if you want a the cheapest usable family car the only option you'll have. and 3k saving is significant in this category.
There's a phenomena called "car journalist bias" where the journalist will favour the vehicle with better styling, badge, performance and handling in a segment that prioritises upfront cost, availability and expected useful life. Your average buyer won't actually test drive a car until they are seriously considering buying it. This is why they journalist rate cars highly that actually sell poorly.
People these days.... 25 grand on a car...1 grand on insurance, and 100 quid a day on petrol... all for a monthly wage of 1200 quid... 👏 who doesn't love modern day society 👍
The Kia was by far the better car. Faster, more fun, more comfortable, proper rear windows, 5 seats, much longer warranty... VW obviously cheated to get around the emissions, sorry, the journalist tests!
I was given a Picanto as a rental when in Israel 3 years ago, and was very pleasantly surprised. We don't get them in the U.S., so it was my first time seeing one, let alone driving one.
How much VW paid for that conclusion, it's just none sense to take the up over the picanto. Kia made a more practical car with 5 seats rather than 4, it has a bigger boot, actual windows in the back and looks like a bigger car from the inside. Kia is also cheaper and has a 7 year warranty while VW is VW with all of VW problem. And probably the most important conclusion for a petrolhead, picanto is a more enjoyable car to drive, it's faster and in my opinion didn't age as much as the VW on the design
The Picanto is now from 13,400. MG3 from 13,300. Sandero from 13,000 (almost double what it was then, and this new model was only 8,000 pre-Covid). Aygo no longer offered. Aygo X is from 16,000. Panda from 14,500.
@@nigel.w Thanks for doing the leg work. I was just about to check to see if you could still get any of them for under 10k. Was discussing the rapid inflation on entry level cars with some friends recently and none of them believed the numbers I was throwing out. They thought I was talking about increases since we were kids, not from 2 or 3 years ago
Australia you can get anything for less than that if you don't mind buying 2008-2009 common one size anything bigger.Corolla,Civic,Mazda 3's all come to mind.yes the mileage might be getting on a bit and age but for 30 to 50% of the price of any new age light car you could do worse.
“Most people will buy these cars for shopping “ they said… but than they start only driving them on their limits. W. T. F. ? My grandma or my sister will buy these and there is no difference in driving experience at such driving style …
Maybe it should now be called the under £15K car since sub £10K do not exist. My father-in-law bought a brand new Dacia Sandero Access (68 plate) £6699 …. He even got a small discount from £6999 since a customer had pulled out. Cheap and cheerful of course but these cars no longer exist. The Sandero is a very different car and it costs much more
Kia Picanto's have the worst glaring halogen headlights in respect to other drivers on the road, I've been a passenger in a Kia Picanto and the headlights literally light up the whole neighbourhood and actually illuminate the tree tops with the height these vehicles project light... This is a huge design fumble in my opinion and is very inconsiderate to other road others as it shines glaring light directly into the eyes of other road users!
If the Up were available here in Canada I would buy. Unfortunately SUVs and pickup trucks are what most people drive. I would like all of them banned from the road unless the person needs one for his or her work such as a carpenter et al.🥶
Picanto should have been the clear winner for this, such a BIAS on VW. Picanto clearly got everything, the most BS is the space, UP got better result for space? wtf
I don't really believe this is their honest opinion. The UP! is a good car, but the quality isn't significantly better than the Picanto. And there's no way the Aygo has a better quality interior than the Picanto. The Picanto, as tested, with the 1.25L 4-cyl engine, also had the best powertrain of them all. And is the only one offered with a proper auto. Dropping the MG on the basis of fuel economy alone is also questionable, because the little 3-cyl engines need to be thrashed on an incline and at the national speed limit and above. Fine if almost all your mileage is done within the limits of a flat city, but otherwise they actually chew through quite a lot more fuel than most people would expect, and aren't comfortable doing motorway speeds. Nonetheless, the UP! and the Picanto are the best for sure. But I'd choose the Picanto 1.25 over the UP! any day of the week. I've driven both new and nearly bought both. The Picanto also relatively easily hauls four adults, whereas the UP! as tested does not.
The false boot floor option for the Up makes a big difference. However, when it came out the Up was a clear leader but I think the Picanto now overtakes it in its current form. However, if you can get a 2 y-o Up with the 90 tsi engine.....
I see, a budget car, 1000£ less, bigger, can service a family of 5 instead of 4, 7 year warranty that is backed by much better history of not braking down in that much more fun to drive with same fuel economy never mind popup windows and lack of screen adjustable headrest etc. and the other car wins......did I miss something?
Picanto should have won this. I think VW got its money's worth. UP! is a good car, but not so much better quality, and the Picanto tested had the 1.25 litre 4-cyl. I've driven both and nearly bought both. If I had to choose, the Picanto is an easy winner, IMO.
Fifth gear cannot shed down a long defunct mentality of German/euro biased mentality! This mentality is only remained in south-Eastern Europe, even Russia evolved beyond this and buying more Japanese and Korean cars because they are simply more reliable and better value for the money.
I take Picanto anytime over Up. Service would be much cheaper and easier. The trouble with car review and reviewers is that they tend to form an opinion after driving it for a short period of time. The sad thing is people value their review on buying the car but after owning it for some time the true color comes out. That's why I always prefer long term review.
I saw one of those Lambo SUVs on the road yesterday. I don’t know, if it didn’t have the Lamborghini name on the back I would think it’s just another big SUV. It didn’t do any wow thing for me. I tried to snap a picture of it but some beat up Honda blocked my view. (I’m in the US btw).
The Kia wins for me. If I was in the market, and on a budget for a new small car, My head cannot get past the 7 year warranty, also I have dealings with VW in the past, and TBH not good..
To be fair VWs do have a great feel of solidity to them. They use more sound insulation and generally thicker panels. However that does not equate to mechanical quality unfortunately, as nice as the car feels.
Meanwhile the only micro car, and not even really micro, available in north america is the Mitsubishi Mirage. A real car desert here since there are more pick-ups and suvs than cars. In Canada, where gasoline is expensive, we are subject to the taste of American buyers and manufacturers don't bring interesting little car at all.
The Picanto is now from 13,400. MG3 from 13,300. Sandero from 13,000 (almost double what it was then, and this new model was only 8,000 pre-Covid). Aygo no longer offered. Aygo X is from 16,000. Panda from 14,500.

Really nice to see really affordable cars in a head-to-head review. Personally, if I had little money to spend and, for some strange reason, wanted to spend it on a brand new car, I’d probably take the Kia even if I liked the VW better - for the 7 year warranty. Because IF I had little money, THAT would absolutely be the ONE selling point. I have been in both and yes, the VW just feels more mature but money is money.
All of these are modern rubbish. For much less than £10K I suggest a Morris Minor, even rag-top examples can be found in this budget. Register it as a classic and no road tax to pay and MOT exempt. No depreciation either. Much better buy.

Ker-ching. Why I binned auto express, whoever buys the ads got the result, however baffling 🤦
Up! has less seats in the back, popout windows, smaller boot yet it gets more points than the Picanto. The VW bias is amazing
And Kia doesn't have the recent sinister history that VW has.

Here in the US the cheap new car has pretty much disappeared. The only one new car left in 2024 below $20k will be the Nissan Versa.
Tough to take this seriously. The Picanto was the obvious winner, but the Dacia being struck off immediately despite being 30% cheaper (!!) was crazy.
