  • When LASER is passed through a glass plate spread with fine micro
    particles, the beam gets diffracted by the particles and circular rings are obtained on the screen By measuring the radii of the rings and the
    distance between the glass plate and the screen, the size of the particle can be determined.

    Sir, Nice explanation on laser diffraction. Thank you. I tried to mimic his in our lab. However, I was not successful enough to get that two circles. on the screen. Kindly let me know if I need any additional arrangements to get this pattern.
    The laser used 532nm (1000mJ)
    The particle used is glass particles of 10micrometer size.
    The distance between the screen and particle slit is 10cm.

      For better result Try in dark room and start the distance from 5cm.use above 600nm laser source.

    Sir could you please tell me that lycopodium powder available on amazon could be used for this experiment or any other specific details about this powder ...and also names of others chemicals whose particle size can be determined using this technique.🙏

      I did experiment using lycopodium powder coated plate (available in scientific stores).
      if u want to do experiment using powder directly that is available in market ,a microscope slide, with or without a well, is prepared with a droplet of water, and a fine dusting of lycopodium powder is applied. Then, a cover-glass can be placed over the water and spore sample in order to reduce convection in the water by evaporation. Since this is highly flammable please do take safety measures.
      Any Micron level spherical particle thickness powders can be used for this experiment.
      Ex: polystyrene latex
