  • What started as an idyllic birthday weekend vacation for one Texas couple in Mexico has spiraled into a medical and financial nightmare. Jared Hill was hit by a rogue wave and instantly paralyzed. His partner Justin Raiford says the hospital where they went demanded thousands of dollars to admit Jared, and thousands more to perform surgery. NewsNation Natasha Zouves tells the story.

No offense, but with all the news out of Mexico, visiting as a tourist is simply asking to become victimized. In fact, the Mexicans I work with are afraid of crossing into their own country.

Jared is my mom’s best friend, basically my uncle. I was so scared for him, his mom texted us and we were so scared. We didn't think he would ever walk again, but when we heard little things like smiling and waving on camera, we had hope for him. On March 30th, we saw a video of him on a machine, running. Unfortunately, 2 facts here that a lot of tourists don't understand when going to mexico or just outside the US. 1. Misinformed by their "international insurance" it's not accepted in a lot of countries, especially for special procedures. 2. Mexico, as many other countries had to do "cash only" type of procedures, mainly for tourists, because a lot of American tourists were getting procedures done and walking away without paying anything. Which it was a big deal because it was a waste of time, money and resources when that could have been used on Mexican citizens that really needed an urgent procedure.

This just makes the place look even worse & people defend this. Talk about a lord of the flies mentality. Everyone trying to get theirs. My best regards to these men that went through tough situations, unexpected injuries to get emergency medical attention in Mexico. International medical insurance will be reimburse the medical expenses once claims are processed.
However, Unfortunately Mexican citizens of wealth or those of less economic means and Foreign individuals will only get medical services non-emergency/emergency situations it’s all cash bases and up front.
In 2000 my father-in-law a resident in Jalisco needed emergency surgery and all his adult children had to gather $18k up front in order for the physician may attend to his medical surgery to save his life.
For Americans it may have felt like being held ransom/hostage… it’s to cover expenses of the patient in real time and to assure the medical facility to continue serving and so it may can run efficiently in the future patients.
Us Americans are so fortunate (spoiled rotten) to obtain medical services even without insurance or an individual can apply for low income medical insurance.
