- Sports car racing with one lap 44 miles long! Porsche made cars specially for this race. The circuit is no longer used, and it is easy to see why!

The sound reminds me of my school days, when we were taken to the "film room". I only wish they had shown stuff like this back then. Motorsport is always interesting. And thank you for posting this material.

In the days before EU regulations this must have been a great spectator sportshame it had to die back in 1977.

At first I was annoyed that this is a low quality video of original film footage, but after watching just a few seconds of it... It is a very charming experience to see it as it was seen then. Thank You!!
Really frightening today.looking at people unconsciously standing so close to the cars (which already were very fast as Porsche 906/907 Alfa R.33 Lola T70 and others) = Someone loved the Targa up there!

I was at this race. I was stationed at NAF Sigonella and a friend and I went up for the weekend.
My son & I hope to do the same one day.I recall reading about the race in Motor Sport mag (no TV,etc in those days)Have been fan Nino Vacarella / 512S ever since!Its one unticked box left in my life!!If God was a sportscar driver He would do this race!!

People watching risking nearly as much as the drivers...no major accidents though if memory serves.Someone did really love the Targa up there....

Love it! Seems like there's not a lot of good period footage of the Targa Florio. This one, while amateur shot, is a terrific view, and well edited within the camera with the plane ride there, the shot of the program etc.
Thanks for watching. I know it is low quality: please see my comments about the quality (three months ago), for which I make no apology. Getting these things done professionally is expensive, I might get it done one day (or sell it...).

The blue Chevron at 4:27 hit the Armco just down the "track" from where we were watching and lost the fender.

Yes, it is,and it has been digitised by projecting it on to a screen and filming that. There are all sorts of errors there, and it would be much better (and expensive) to have it done professionally. One day...
Without banging on about it, I was floored to discove that a person livin nr here is an ex racer and mate of my hero Jackie oliver...how cool is that! Co winner of the greatest 24 hr du mans ever,1969,.Can Am, F1,....WHAT IS LEFT TO SAY?Oh, Targa Florio, one race i never saw, but one when one day funds permittin, a trip to Sicily....map of the course in hand,.....visit to local car hire....and live the dream!!
@vrimi79 Its a 10 lap race on a 45 mile track in the last years. Its not time trial, you can see some overtaking in the video.

It was a round of the then World Sportscar Championship........same as le Mans 24hr, Spa 1000km,etc...but errrm.....just around the mountains of Sicily.....no pressure then....!!
As a time trial type of race. Overtaking a bit difficult!
