DAVIDSON, N.C. - The Davidson women's basketball team knocked off Wake Forest at home Saturday, picking up it's first win over the Demon Deacons since 1998 by way of a 57-52 victory in Belk Arena.
For the second season in a row, the 'Cats are off to a 2-0 start. Following the loss, Wake Forest moves to 1-1 overall on the young season.
After being knotted at 15-15 through the first quarter, the Wildcats out-scored the Deacons by five points to take a 35-30 lead into the break. The second-quarter surge came in large part to a 57.1 shooting percentage from the floor and 50 percent effort from deep.
Coming out of the half, Davidson and Wake Forest traded baskets over the third quarter with the 'Cats clinging to a two-point advantage entering the final stanza.
With Davidson up 43-41 to start the fourth, the back-and-forth action picked back up and Wake Forest reclaimed the lead, 50-49 with 4:47 remaining in regulation.
The Wildcats went back in front for good with back-to-back buckets from Elle Sutphin with only 2:33 left to play. Sutphin extended the lead to 55-52 with a pair of free throws in the closing seconds.
Wake Forest continued to search for a comeback win by using a bulk of the remaining clock before shooting a three-pointer that would not fall. Dunn brought in the games final rebound, while also getting fouled, before sealing the deal from the charity stripe.
The Wildcats were led on the night by Sutphin who had a game-high 18 points to go along with six rebounds, one assist, one block and one steal. Joining Sutphin in double-digits was Dunn who was just shy of a double-double with 12 points and nine rebounds, in addition to two assists and two blocks.
For the game, Davidson shot 37.9 percent (22-of-58) from the field, and 100 percent (9-of-9) from the foul line. The Wildcats forced the Demon Deacons into 21 turnovers while making 12 miscues of their own.
Wake Forest ended the contest shooting 39.1 percent (18-of-46) from the floor, 30 percent (6-of-20) from long range and 76.9 percent (10-13) from the foul line. The Demon Deacons out rebounded the 'Cats 36-29.
