I owned a CT 49 years ago and had lots of upgrading to do as well. The biggest upgrade with this boat is to get electric winches--essential! Those sails are huge. If it's not easy to get the sails up, you end up just motoring around. And it's a safety issue also: In high winds and big swells, you need to be in the cockpit and not outside exposed by the mast using both hands to hold that heavy portable drill jury-rig. Also, seriously think about a furling main and mizzen; they are expensive but make sailing a joy. Make the changes now, while you're in the process of refitting.

Bobby & Laura....my wife and i just upgraded to a 52 from a 34 (yes...power boat, sorry)...but having all that space, full fridge, freezer, washer dryer, storage, generator etc....is FANTASTIC!!!!! Definitely worth the work to rehab!! Its a great live aboard!!! Good Luck!!

My parent's had this boat built (sold in the 90's)! Her original name is the Christine Marie after my mom. Sad to see the condition that it is in now. But glad someone is going to put some love into her.

The forward cabin was originally a vberth. There also used to be a large teak table that was in the main cabin. Hoping that wasn't lost as it was gorgeous. Cushions have been changed as well. They used to be a light blue fabric. Cute dogs! :)

Good sailing on her to come. Wife and I owned a 71' Loa /64'Lwl Taiwan Clipper. Not glass, double plank mahogany with 71' main mast. Sailed/carried small cargo and lived abaord her continously for many years, she was a gorgeous Ketch. Ya'll have an adventure ahead. Sail on until daybreak and then a few leagues further.

A 1989 CT 56 runs around $150,000 to $170,000 in the current market. Judging from the condition of Bobby's new purchase and knowing his negotiating abilities with a broker that had a yacht sitting in a dock for two years, I can bet that the price went quite down towards the $100,000. This is the kind of boat I used to sail back in the 80s and all I can say is that they are heavy, quite seaworthy and good at ocean crossing. Apart from new sails, a probable engine overhaul and new electronics, it looks like a great cosmetics project that can be tackled on while cruising. Maybe that is why Laura is back, for the sanding, painting and varnishing. Maybe I am "age" prejudiced but I find this boat beautiful.

It will be fun watching you make this boat your own with the repairs and changes you will have to make. Hopefully you will have the patience and time it will take to do it right before you decide to take it on that first long voyage so you and the Boys can get back to what started this adventure to start with. Fix or move on and let Sailing Doodles continue. Good luck Bobby that on the new boat, looking forward to this new adventure.

Congrats guys! With Laura out on the bow pulpit, she was actually in a different zip code than Bobby was! She has great lines, nice interior woodwork and lots of potential. Lots of elbow grease and a to do list as things are found to be in need of repair or replacement. Electric winches would be a nice upgrade over the right angle drill. The interior layout/space is phenomenal! I’m sure the surveyor has a list to start with. Best of luck to you on your floating home. She will be a beautiful vessel when you’re done.

Congratulations you bought a new sail boat! It's good you had someone look at it for us novices we only know just a few points but having someone that had been around boats for years they can show some of the bad points like the sails, it's costly but you don't want to leave without good sails. I take it you don't have kids, your young have a lot of years to learn about sailing. We lived in Have de Grace which is at the mouth of the bay I was stationed at Aberdeen so we loved seeing all the sail boats out on the water. We now live in Missouri with the muddy Mississippi we had a few cabin cruises mainly for the kids and grandparents. Good luck I hope to follow you! on your voyage.
