For a home made outdoor garden bug repellent, mix equal parts of cayenne, onion and garlic powders.... Put the mix in a tea strainer (or ball it up in cheesecloth), and just make a tea of it all in hot water. Let it steep for a good while, then let it get to room temperature, put the tea in a spray bottle and go to town..... This also makes a great homemade mace spray if you're on a budget (proven by myself in the Southside of Chicago one insane f*cking night) 😁👍

I've been using drywall tape to cover the holes in my pots. Cheap, works in any pot, allows water to flow while keeping soil in.

Limonene is almost insoluble in water, but dissolves readily in ethanol. It's bettter to put the peels in alcohol, leave them there for a few days, like they do when they make limoncello, and then add 2 or 3 spoonfuls of this solution per litre of water and make an emulsion to spray your plants.
Cinnamon is the only thing that has helped me against those pesky little flies. And it worked so quickly!!!! Almost lost my aloe plants but the cinnamon got rid of the flies in days and after a good week my plant babies where back on their way to recovery ❤

Great tips, I use most of them already. A cheaper rooting hormone than honey is cinnamon. I always use that for rooting and my cuttings very rarely fail.

Yeah I use a quality cinnamon because the cheap copy wasn't any success. 🤭 Now we are best friends.
The water that willow tree cuttings have been soaking in is really good rooting hormone too.

I live in a subtropical area, I have planted peppers, when they were just emerging, from one day to another, the leaves were gone! The culprit, ants ( those that can carry leaves bigger than themselves). Since I have cinnamon trees, I cut the leaves onto small pieces and scattered them around my baby pepper plants, so far, those ants didn't touch them again.

Thanks also for distinguishing between Ceylon and Cassia cinnamon. I'm a bit of an herbalist and the negligence on that part is a pet peeve. They're two different plants, with Cassia being a common skin irritant if used cosmetically.
On pots with multiple holes, coffee filters or scraps from coconut fiber basket liners works great also.
And fish tank water works very well too, if you'd rather save the vegetable broth for cooking with.

One little thing to the wood ash tip, this is alot better if you use wood that hasnt been treated, if its treated it may contain chemicals that harm the plants

I buy plastic screen (as used in window screen) and fold a little up placeing it in pot bottom. It keeps dirt in pot but allowes water to drain out well.

Just a small tip. Use the bottom of the label as a guide when cutting plastic bottles, then take the label off. The bottle will then be more stable when sitting on surface

I normally just use a fiberglass window screen and cut it up to size, if my pot doesn’t have drainage hole I’ll add an inch of Leca to the bottom so it doesn’t rot.
I heard grass trimmings...
....put into a big bucket, soaked with water and left there will make good fertilizer water.

if you have a fishtank you can use the dirty water from your weekly water change to water your plants aswell

I like to use styrofoam packing peanuts in bottom of pot before I transplant to bigger pot for good drainage.
Plus you don't have to use as much soil in the pot which saves money.😁

@@SheffieldMadePlants I like to try and upcycle as much as I can. I also use the larger foam pieces that come with appliances in big pots.I just take them and break them up into smaller pieces.
Yes that cooking water is a brilliant way to feeding your plants, keep in mind to let that water cool before adding it or else everything will die in the soil medium,

I haven't seen it mentioned anywhere in your vids, but to get rid of fungus gnats you can keep springtails.
I have them in all of my pots and animal enclosures and it seems that they outcompete the gnats. They only decompose dead organic matter and are not dangerous to plants. They also need wet environment to survive, so no need to worry about any outbreaks.

Incidentally, I just finished treating a few of my plant babies with Orange Oil Pest Control. It's a slightly different recipe which entails steeping a single orange peel in vegetable oil for 30 days, then adding water and dishwashing soap. (Yours is quicker.) I've been successfully using this for more than one year. 😉

Depending on the type of pasta you may not to use the water as the starch will leave a sticky mess on the soil, ripe for mold.
0:28 orange essential oil repels bugs
1:11 cinnamon - control fungus of rot on stems or roots of the plants.
Cinnamon is effective at destroying fungus.

Could you make one on leaf shine sprays? I suspect most plants stores use it, the leaves are so shiny when you buy the plant, and once at home, they just turn to normal mat leaves. What do you think of leaf shine sprays (natural or chemical)? should they be used at all, and if so how? I've also read articles saying this is not respectful to the plant so idk!

@@SheffieldMadePlants I live in Spain and before in Amsterdam, there it was worse, plants were almost mirror like in the fancy garden centers... And it's true it's very attractive.. but once home, without the oil they add, even clean, the leaves end losing their first shine... I'm wondering if I should just accept that or yield and get the typical leaf shine oil based product , but I'm kinda scared for the plants pores.. I don't wanna damage them either!

Sticky lint rollers work well to detect and remove pests as well. Also if you live in a tick prone area like I do, you can use a lint roller to check for ticks on your clothes and even your hair!

I'm assuming that honey, or for that matter rooting hormone, doesn't help cuttings propagated in water. Is there something I can do for cuttings such as rosemary, that take a long time to grow roots? I've had a problem with the immersed stems developing something that looks like fungus or rot before they have a chance to root. Thanks.

You can use it for water cuttings. Some of the powder or honey will dilute into the water and have the same effect. Thanks for subbing 👍

I'm fairly new to indoor (or any) gardening. Other than a sansevieria whose will to live has been stronger than 20+ years of neglect , it's only been in the last year or so (COVID) that I've managed to keep any other plants alive. One warning to those using their cooking water: salt can (and usually will) harm plants roots. So if you toss salt into your broth while it's boiling then better not use it. But if you wait to salt after the food is out, have at it!

By pure and true cinnamon, do you mean the pictured ceylon cinnamon instead of the common cassia cinnamon (which has poisonous coumarin and tastes stronger) or does it refer to a different thing? I suppose ceylon cinnamon is often branded as true cinnamon in the stores? Cooking the orange peels is also very practical, gonna try that as well. And I believe coffee grounds can also work as pest deterrent while acting as fertilizer at the same time? I think you've mentioned it on some video as well.
Yep Ceylon cinnamon is the one. Works much better.
I would like to ask if you have used organic oranges or regular ones? I'm wondering because in my country there are rather nasty chemicals on the peels of regular citrus fruits that are hormone disruptors and more. I'm wondering if it's the compounds in the peel, the chemicals sprayed on the peel or both that repels the pests.
It's the compounds in the peel that repels the pests. I used regular oranges but if they are bad in your country then organic will work
