The first part of this is Steve Gadd before Steve Gadd. Absolutely superb.
Mel was way the hell ahead of his time. You could predict what all those other big band drummers were gonna play. Still can, most of them. You never knew where Mel was gonna put it.
“Hey, you think these clothes and hair styles will look outdated in 50 years?” “Nah, it’ll be fine.” 😊

Originality is such great thing, especially when it comes to drum solos.
The guy that filmed this, obviously, had no idea what to do with camera. Great solo by one of the greatest. You can see where JH got his style from!
It would have been an entire crew of people, not a "guy" filming. Cameras were always set for the main performance, not isolated solos. All camera positions & movement were under the control of the director in the control room and switched live before being recorded.
