I 100% agree. However, if you were the wealthy relative that's giving money to his son or grandson, would you really just give them $200,000 in one lump sum? Seems a lot smarter to payout in installments or at the very least offer financial advise or put some away in a savings account.

Hopefully one day they are able to manage the payout for them to some point. I think it's nice some of it is fun money and comes at 18 when they need it for school. But maybe some of it should be held back until they're 25 or finish college whichever comes first. Or like have it in Trust to be used for hardship medical, buying a house, or school until they have met requirements.

As someone who lives in Wisconsin, I knew that Native Americans got some money at some point, I didn't know the amount. I agree with the tribal leader that thought the money shouldn't go out in a lump sum and there should be some conditions like going to college or getting a job. I think they should still get the money. Yes, they should be fiscally smart with their money. No one is forced to go to casinos. $200,000 is a good chunk of money, but they aren't loaded for life.

After there 18 they get checks from gaming some tribe get it once a month some quarterly and some once a year my tribe gives us one check a year for between 1,500-2,000$ a year When people in our tribe turn 18 they use to get like 45-50gz but council passed a law that they can only get up to 5gz at 18 and can't get the full amount until 22 unless they are in college then they can access more of there money
The have to take a literacy course and pass the literacy test to get the money now. The money gets put in the bank and they aren’t allowed to spend it all once unless college education or emergency

Imagine all the people who lost half their stock accounts in 2009 what would have happened if Social Security was tied into stocks then? Mass riots and a war would probably have ensued. Currently, SS pays out everything that it takes in, meaning that with current trends, you will get less (inflation adjusted) from Social security after you retire than you paid into it while you were working. If everyone's money were allowed to grow, as in some mandatory 401k like program, you would have several times as much money to work with. After all, the stock market returns an average of 10% while the economy as a whole only grows at 2%, which is the best increase you could expect from a program which does not take any advantage of compound interest.

Very interesting... to state the obvious; why not split the money into a certain amount, say $100k after hs graduation and the other $100k after college graduation?
That's the change they're trying to implement. Even the tribe president wants this change, but it seems the other tribal leaders don't want to embrace that change yet.

The local tribes here in AZ do something similar BUT they don't give out all the money at once. The kids get a percentage at 18 with a slight variance depending on if they graduated/got a GED/are still in school. Then every year at their birthday they get another percentage with more coming if they've received a college degree or joined the military, until age 21 when they get the remainder. It's not a perfect system but compared to the Ho-Chunk way it really seems like it.

I'm Ojibwe and Cree, I live in Ontario but am mostly white, so I was "raised white". Though I do know very well what my brothers and sisters have gone through, and how horribly they're struggling to this day. But, that being said. If you have me 200k when I was 18, I would've blown it on tattoos, trips, drugs etc. But give it to me now at 22? I would invest, put it in an RSP, help pay for my college and food/rent and put in into savings for a future mortgage. You can't just give kids money like that. Even though theyre technically adults, most 18 year olds are as mature as they were at 15. Especially with Native Americans, that kind of money is dangerous. With their rates of drug and alcohol abuse, it could be a disaster. I think the best thing to do would be to put it into a savings fund. Allowing it to gain interest while they can only withdraw a certain amount every year. Allow them to apply to have more money than the cap withdrawn if they have a good enough reason (starting a business etc). Or provide it in installments.

IKR, I’m Native that lives on a reservation, and my reservation has no alcohol or drug abuse, we also don’t get 18 money and we don’t have casinos, we have a big forest and still remain all our natural resources. MOST native reservations are doing better than Americans. Natives are what keep this planet alive. Can’t say the same about white people living in high rises, or the white people killing each other, or the white people living in trailer parks get high on meth and drinking a beer. This girl chose the worst reservation in America to do a documentary on, and now people are gonna judge us by it cause this white girl made a bad mistake.

Agree with you all, I constantly get asked if I get money somehow. My tribe has a casino but it's small and run down. I don't think they would give our youth chunks of money anyway. I also wanna say, if anyone gets government money or funding it's through like land they inherited or own. There's few that have inherited land and people don't understand that a lot of my tribal people died because of treaties and some signed treaties. Today in America, I'm happy to see more Natives stepping up, we can't forget about treaties, if the government was to give us money, it would technically be money owed to our ancestors.
They would be much wiser to appoint a trustee to help manage their money - you give a broke kid all that money and they will have no idea what to do - they are still young and impulsive.

Also to Ho-Chunk tribes organiser, instead of dropping it all on the day of their graduation, make it a goal-achievement, so whenever you pass certain goals, you'll achieve the money, for example 10% on high school graduation, 50% on college graduation, 20% on the age of 30, and 20% on first child. I believe it would help these youth to achieve more in their life to access the money. It's like a trust funds with certain requirements to unlock the money.

The video title is misleading they didn’t get it just for graduating but it accumulated over a period of 18 years. Each year or even monthly tribal members over the age of 18 get money since these kids are not allowed to get it, it grows over time and the requirements to get this money is 1. Be 18 and 2. Graduate from high school

Speaking as a full blooded native American, I believe that payouts of this exorbitant amount of money for having graduated high school is not necessarily a good idea: Graduating from high school is merely the beginning of many multiple steps of learning anything useful in order to earn the privilege of merely being given a chance to become a productive member of any society; working a job. And learning things in a school setting is not typically societally productive time spent. The recipients of $200K have not done anything productively useful yet. They're only 18 years of age. Receiving $200K upon graduation from high school takes away any incentive to immediately further one's purpose in life. These recipients certainly have not earned the privilege to be given the chance to have a technical job in the world outside the Rez. The money is easily blown since 18 year olds from the Rez do not have a decently developed appreciation of Time nor Money, and then the kids are from that point on confused about what life after high school is supposed to be about. The adoption of the concept of "well, we own a part of the company and we're profit sharing" is a misapplied and unfortunately convenient concept. The use of the concept is not essentially a lie; it *IS* a lie. Way to teach an entire generation a wrong set of values for the tribal young people. It'll be interesting to see the results of this monetary experiment in 30 years, to take an honest look on whether the 18 Money worked its magic.

How the money was earned is irrelevant. Kids who are born into money are far and and few between, compared to what these native americans are getting. Also, what are you trying to say about people with trust funds? Clearly they can maintain their funds, which is understandable since their parents put them in a position to receive a trust fund, and taught them the value of money.

I wish my tribe had these kind of finances, but I'm grateful for the annual disbursement I get at Thanksgiving every year. I It helps cover my bills during the holidays and pays for my vacation.

As a European, I still don't understand why Native Americans don't insist on white people being called *European Americans* or *Europeans* while people who are actually from North America are called *Americans* . *(Native) Americans* , you know? I live in the Caribbean, a Native American Just bought last last year the Hotel & Casino I worked at, they do the same with their kids but they have to go to enrolled in a College to get the money, they also provide social service and pension to their elders.
If somebody gave me 2017 the first thing I would have done was paid off my college education in cash. With the leftover money I would have started a business that way family members in my family could have work. I would have helped my mom to open a bed-and-breakfast and I would have ran it with her. Mom's good with money she knows how to use it well and we probably could have saved at least a third of that money and we could have put it into Christian Ministries that are working in America and in other countries
Why is it unfair for these Native Americans to receive money? Their ancestors suffered more than ANY people during the founding of our nation. It's their Tribe's money, they can agree to do with it as they see fit. I would recommend that the Tribe holds classes to teach the kids how to invest, bank, and use their money to further their lives, and to advise them on the dangers of drugs.

My mother was 1/2 native she got monthly checks of $1500. My brother and I don't get anything because we're 1/4th. The sad thing is how enabling that money is. Many of my uncles and my mother were drug and alcohol dependent and my grandmother has had to endure the early deaths of her 7 children from the lifestyle.

Hopefully one day they are able to manage the payout for them to some point. I think it's nice some of it is fun money and comes at 18 when they need it for school. But maybe some of it should be held back until they're 25 or finish college whichever comes first. Or like have it in Trust to be used for hardship medical, buying a house, or school until they have met requirements.

As someone who lives in Wisconsin, I knew that Native Americans got some money at some point, I didn't know the amount. I agree with the tribal leader that thought the money shouldn't go out in a lump sum and there should be some conditions like going to college or getting a job. I think they should still get the money. Yes, they should be fiscally smart with their money. No one is forced to go to casinos. $200,000 is a good chunk of money, but they aren't loaded for life.

Currently, SS pays out everything that it takes in, meaning that with current trends, you will get less (inflation adjusted) from Social security after you retire than you paid into it while you were working. If everyone's money were allowed to grow, as in some mandatory 401k like program, you would have several times as much money to work with. After all, the stock market returns an average of 10% while the economy as a whole only grows at 2%, which is the best increase you could expect from a program which does not take any advantage of compound interest.

The local tribes here in AZ do something similar BUT they don't give out all the money at once. The kids get a percentage at 18 with a slight variance depending on if they graduated/got a GED/are still in school. Then every year at their birthday they get another percentage with more coming if they've received a college degree or joined the military, until age 21 when they get the remainder. It's not a perfect system but compared to the Ho-Chunk way it really seems like it.

I'm Ojibwe and Cree, I live in Ontario but am mostly white, so I was "raised white". Though I do know very well what my brothers and sisters have gone through, and how horribly they're struggling to this day. But, that being said. If you have me 200k when I was 18, I would've blown it on tattoos, trips, drugs etc. But give it to me now at 22? I would invest, put it in an RSP, help pay for my college and food/rent and put in into savings for a future mortgage.
You can't just give kids money like that. Even though theyre technically adults, most 18 year olds are as mature as they were at 15.
Especially with Native Americans, that kind of money is dangerous. With their rates of drug and alcohol abuse, it could be a disaster.
I think the best thing to do would be to put it into a savings fund. Allowing it to gain interest while they can only withdraw a certain amount every year. Allow them to apply to have more money than the cap withdrawn if they have a good enough reason (starting a business etc). Or provide it in installments.

Agree with you all, I constantly get asked if I get money somehow. My tribe has a casino but it's small and run down. I don't think they would give our youth chunks of money anyway. I also wanna say, if anyone gets government money or funding it's through like land they inherited or own. There's few that have inherited land and people don't understand that a lot of my tribal people died because of treaties and some signed treaties. Today in America, I'm happy to see more Natives stepping up, we can't forget about treaties, if the government was to give us money, it would technically be money owed to our ancestors.

Also to Ho-Chunk tribes organiser, instead of dropping it all on the day of their graduation, make it a goal-achievement, so whenever you pass certain goals, you'll achieve the money, for example 10% on high school graduation, 50% on college graduation, 20% on the age of 30, and 20% on first child. I believe it would help these youth to achieve more in their life to access the money. It's like a trust funds with certain requirements to unlock the money.

Each year or even monthly tribal members over the age of 18 get money since these kids are not allowed to get it, it grows over time and the requirements to get this money is 1. Be 18 and 2. Speaking as a full blooded native American, I believe that payouts of this exorbitant amount of money for having graduated high school is not necessarily a good idea:
Graduating from high school is merely the beginning of many multiple steps of learning anything useful in order to earn the privilege of merely being given a chance to become a productive member of any society; working a job. And learning things in a school setting is not typically societally productive time spent. The recipients of $200K have not done anything productively useful yet. They're only 18 years of age.
Receiving $200K upon graduation from high school takes away any incentive to immediately further one's purpose in life. These recipients certainly have not earned the privilege to be given the chance to have a technical job in the world outside the Rez. The money is easily blown since 18 year olds from the Rez do not have a decently developed appreciation of Time nor Money, and then the kids are from that point on confused about what life after high school is supposed to be about.
The adoption of the concept of "well, we own a part of the company and we're profit sharing" is a misapplied and unfortunately convenient concept. The use of the concept is not essentially a lie; it *IS* a lie. Way to teach an entire generation a wrong set of values for the tribal young people. It'll be interesting to see the results of this monetary experiment in 30 years, to take an honest look on whether the 18 Money worked its magic.

Those giving them that money have a very serious moral obligation to thoroughly teach them how to manage money. $200,000 can kill someone who does not know how to manage it. To not teach them is irresponsible.

I'm part of the Nez Perce tribe and was given 10,500 dollars. Spent it all in a few months bc I had it all on a debit card linked to my account. This kind of money should never be given to a new adult.

I inherited a large chunk of money when I turned 18 and it was one of the worst things that happened to me.

Its a great thing for Native American youth to have a better chance with having something now...It is a real hard pill to swallow when your land is taken and given to another people...My family is on the rolls Creek Nation (wind clan)...I'm happy for the ones that can have something to look forward to....and pray that they do the right thing...to be real you can say that about any teen with money or without...Teenagers are just taller babies...But I pray the best for all nations...

I live in the Caribbean, a Native American Just bought last last year the Hotel & Casino I worked at, they do the same with their kids but they have to go to enrolled in a College to get the money, they also provide social service and pension to their elders.

If somebody gave me 2017 the first thing I would have done was paid off my college education in cash.
With the leftover money I would have started a business that way family members in my family could have work.
I would have helped my mom to open a bed-and-breakfast and I would have ran it with her.
Mom's good with money she knows how to use it well and we probably could have saved at least a third of that money and we could have put it into Christian Ministries that are working in America and in other countries

Why is it unfair for these Native Americans to receive money? Their ancestors suffered more than ANY people during the founding of our nation. It's their Tribe's money, they can agree to do with it as they see fit.
I would recommend that the Tribe holds classes to teach the kids how to invest, bank, and use their money to further their lives, and to advise them on the dangers of drugs.

My mother was 1/2 native she got monthly checks of $1500. My brother and I don't get anything because we're 1/4th. The sad thing is how enabling that money is. Many of my uncles and my mother were drug and alcohol dependent and my grandmother has had to endure the early deaths of her 7 children from the lifestyle.

It's really annoying that some want to go so low as to try to 'milk' or take advantage something that obviously has led others to struggle (while many times not having to struggle him/herself)... It'd be better if someone tried to better oneself and be honest of ones own past instead of having an easy come up then pretend like he/she's something else.

Forget a new car. They’re a rip-off. I’d keep living the same way I am now and have money for awhile. If I bought something, it would be a house, so I wouldn’t have to pay a landlord.

Junito Punto Comm quite honestly, I’m just going to invest in necessities for school, such as a laptop and such supples. Then I want to put some in a savings account, maybe investments, for when I graduate college to use to *hopefully* pay off any loans (but I don’t even plan on taking those out).

This is so cool that their tribe leader actually gives back to his tribe. But he should really teach these kids how to really invest their money. Its sad knowing that some of them waste it on really stupid things and how fast they spent it. If i was given that money even at the age of 15 I'd invest it wisely for the reason that I was really into the Stock Market at an early age but thats me. This generation of kids are growing up with a mind set that drugs are a new norm its being played in the music, people are showing it off on social media they are growing up thinking it was cool so they don't have the same way of thinking as most of us do.
