    When I was a kid, I remember playing in the back yard when I noticed something in the sky. I looked up to see a very bright flash in the sky. It was dusk out, so not light, but not dark. It wasn't a plane, ISS or a satellite. It wasn't a falling star, as it was a stationary with no tail. It was clear out with no clouds and you could lightly see some of the brighter stars. It only lasted a couple seconds and was gone. I never knew what it was. Every time I see videos like this it reminds me of what I saw, and wonder if I witnessed a new baby black hole or star going super nova... or something!

    Considering that supermassive black holes are believed to reside in the centre of most large galaxies where the extreme stellar density and large populations of giant, super and hyper giant stars makes these catastrophic events highly likely. So even allowing for the fact that most jets would not be pointed at us it still seems incredible that this is the first time it has been observed.

    This is the voice that got me hooked on SpaceRip. I was a little confused at some of the animations, though. That looked like a sphere, not a disc. What shape is a black hole? Disc, sphere, funnel? Do funnels have the topography do accommodate twin bursts?

    • @inthefade
      @inthefade 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The event horizon surrounding a black hole is typically spherical. Simulations of two singularities merging momentarily create differently shaped joined event horizons, like a rounded hourglass. And IIRC spinning black holes (which the vast majority are likely to do) can "drag" the spacetime around themselves so much that they may appear distorted along one axis by external observers.

      Close enough to warch, you would be dead before anything reaches your eyes. Even if you are in the same galaxy you would die from the burst. But if our imaging tools improve we might get more data and visual images. However as you could have seen from the video it is literally nothing but a big flash.
