David, I'm not kidding when I say that I yelped with joy when I saw this video in my feed. I love your analysis and good God do I love Debussy's string Quartet. The combination of the two overwhelmed me 😂😭 thank you so much for doing this

I absolutely love this piece! It’s so unique and innovative, not to mention catchy from the sickeningly beautiful second mvt melody…

Quite wonderful with analysis and annotated score. My sincere thanks @David Bennett Thomas. I wish I were unencumbered enough to fly to study composition at your University. Meanwhile your posts bring me joy.

Tnx for this Mr Bennett. I’m an arranger and studio musician in HongKong since 1984 !Although I had classical lessons 4 yrs, I’m self taught in arranging . As am always trying to improve myself, your channel helps a lot 🙏🥂

Well - what an interesting find indeed. Such stunningly beautiful and powerful music, along with a harmonic analysis of such - brilliant.
The analysis is in part fascinating because of the language used - quite strange and interesting from a jazz/pop musician's perspective. So now I need to do some analysis of the analysis in order to ascertain what's going on with all aspects.
Thanks so much for so generously sharing your skill, knowledge and work. Wonderful.

David, this is my best Christmas present this year. I am just recovering from the Flu and having your analysis makes my day. I wish you and your family a very happy new year.

Professor Thomas, absolutely wonderful analysis. I also loved Debussy's quote which you included in this video. Where did you find that quote?

your channel is great! I love this kind of stuff but it's just above my head. I studied Stefan koskas tonal harmony in college. But he never quite gets to this level. I'm wondering if you(or anyone else) can recommend a resource that could build my knowledge and skills. one problem i have with researching stuff online is the way it jumps around skill levels. I'm hoping to find something that has some kind of linear progression.

Wouldn't parallel first inversion triads constitute fauxbordon, while parallel root position and second inversion triads constitute planing? The former is permissible in traditional counterpoint / voice-leading, while the latter are not.

Philip Daniel Yes, definitely... that’s why I reference the other two videos that I made if the viewer would like to see more examples of parallel fifth and octaves. I hear this passage being more connected to late romanticism

Are all string quartets in just intonation like barbershop quartets? If you're going to harmonize 3rds and 7ths I don't see how you can avoid it.

Prof. Dave, still going strong with the analysis. Every month or so, I get a wave of nostalgia, I wish I lived in a parallel universe where I could have studied more under you and Dr. Chittum.
