Consumerism is one of the coldest tricks in the online book. I feel bad for caving into it, and with the way they're designed, I ALSO feel bad for leaving it. It feels sickening, and I hate it. Some advice I've been following is that if it was something I *reeeallly* wanted, I should just try to find it at a thrift store for cheaper. Thrifting has been a blessing for me personally, and It's saved me so much money from both dumb purchases and purchases I wanted. I'm happy with what I've got right now, and I only want to make changes when it follows my path, not the ads from my TikTok or TH-cam feeds.
Art tablets are super expensive and not affordable for the average person to get/replace often. I'd love to get another tablet but then I remembered I have an ipad pro I got as a birthday present and I don't even like digital art. Traditional art supplies are expensive so I do believe in getting stuff that lasts. But at the same time, I don't think folks need 4-5 boxes of 100+ markers or colored pencils. Blending colors and mixed media exists. I agree that trendy art supplies sucks in beginners. I once fell down that rabbit hole and it was like every week creators were like get this brand new thing it will make you a better artist and I couldn't keep up because I was a high schooler and didn't have the funds. Soon art became not very fun to me. I only recently started back getting into art and I don't even want to post the stuff I create because it isn't "perfect" nor fits a curated aesthetic. Great video btw!
Thank you! The constantly trying to keep up can make art so unfun! I didn’t post my art online for a looong time and that was honestly really nice. I felt like I was really doing it for me, I don’t know why I always get tempted to start posting again smh.
I bought an iPad Pro for drawing when I was around 15. I bought it because an artist I watched on TH-cam had one and I thought that if I wanted to be a good artist, I needed expensive tablets and of course I was wrong. But then a few weeks later I noticed artists using fancy tablets like Wacom tablets instead. Then I wanted more and more but in the end I decided to stick with the iPad. I feel like a lot of the art “influencers” on this platform promote their expensive digital tools and I’ll admit I did fall into it.
I didn't know the first unboxing video was that long ago, so early into the history of TH-cam. And somewhat unrelated but the aethetic of hauls is annoying, I can tell this is forced marketing, and most times forced girliness because ✨️women be shopping✨️, and I am turned away by it as a result. (Invisalign, you know the thing for your teeth, has started doing this too, and it annoys me because this is one of the last things that should be genderized.) Also, gender roles in art is so weird because for the longest time it was a men's thing, probably still is in the world of "high 🚬" art that gets sold for millions. But then in the mainstream consumer industry, suddenly it became a cutsie girl thing. Like "haha art is just this useless thing now, let the girls have it" while the boys get video games. There should definitely be a deeper dive and some academic research into this.
I didn't either! I'm sure they didn't expect it to launch an entire industry. That's an amazing point! I honestly hadn't even thought about how disproportionately this type of content is geared towards women. It's definitely the type of thing that would be self-perpetuating - gear it towards women so they can say "look, it's what the girls want". I couldn't find many stats about gender the digital art world with a quick search, but I suspect you're right. I did find a paper about gender in traditional art that said: "Research conducted by Gørrill (2020) demonstrated that men's art is valued up to 80% more highly. She found that when men signed their work it went up in value, yet when women did so, the value decreased." So, that's crazy... but expected.
@@Art-Amanda That's insane men's work is valued that much more highly than women's, and that if a woman signs it the value of the art is actually worth less. The intersection of art and money to me is such a weird concept because everyone can do it, and a lot of people (an increasing amount) do have this as a job. But some styles are worth much more highly than others, and even if a man just paints a canvas one color or puts a single dot on the canvas, heck even if a banana is taped to a wall, suddenly it's worth millions of dollars and is either placed in museums or stored away in a billionaire's warehouse. "High 🚬" art is crazy (and don't even get me started with music, my literal degree from my university).
oh hello !! enjoyed such topic (consumerism and its conscience jumpscares) being delivered delicately, and not just a reminder that we're going downhill and capitalism will kill us all. the way 'awareness' is delivered to us makes me depressed, anxious, pessimistic but in this video is a nice consensuous of "yep, people are stupid" without any burocacy. the low editing helps! i feel like gossiping with a friend thanks for the subtitles btw!
Hello and thank you! I'm so happy you liked it! I agree, there's just so much doom and gloom out there, it really helps to try and joke about this stuff. Of course, I really wish more people included them, tbh!
