Leave a comment-what do you buy first; the fabric or the pattern?

The key is to buy both at the same time but not ones that are necessarily matching one another. So then you do a second shopping trip, to get more fabric for your patterns, and to get more patterns for your fabrics :)

Definitely, definitely fabric first! Love thrift store fabric shopping and the thrill of a great deal!

Used sewing machines sometimes come with notions. Sometimes a lot, especially if you're buying someones machine in a cabinet. I've scored 3 that had years long accumulations of everything needed to just sit down and sew.

I typically buy the pattern, then the fabric, unless it’s a one yard cut or fat quarter bundles, which are my weakness.😊 I like to machine embroider, quilt, and rarely attempt some garment sewing. I find the latter to be extremely challenging.🙄

I just bought my first quilt kit! I’ve never made one and found an easy one for beginners! Wish me luck.

It depends. If I like the fabric, I will buy if it's is on sale. I buy patterns when they are on sale. I bought the little mat from the dollar store, also.

Joann Fabrics will have sales on patterns. Also Hobby Lobby. Etsy has pdf patterns too that are reasonable priced.

I grew up picking my pattern first then shopping for the fabric and notions - I'm more likely to actually make the project; plus I can only sew so fast! I agree on new or relatively new thread; I tend to pick the thread at the same time I buy the pattern, fabric, and any other notions.
There are so many free patterns/tutorials for garments and other projects; you can also check out sewing books from the Library that often include patterns that you can trace (a roll of Swedish Tracing Paper is a must for any sewing room). I'm also curious to learn about drafting my own patterns that also include variation hacks.
