  • Hi Guys, this is part 1 of a 2 part video series on the Ethereal. Today's video is will discuss the Ethereal's beauty and essence, and outline the recommended garments and styling elements. In part 2 I'll be showcasing Ethereal women and will go in depth into their unique beauty and my styling recommendations for them. I hope today's video really shines a light on all the beautiful characteristics of the Ethereal and helps illuminate all the possible ways their beauty can manifest.

    I tried matte black lip on new years and got complements. One said I looked like a porcelain doll. So matte can work, but it must be a solid, single, statement piece.

    Thank you Elyssa for this video!
    I'm happy you showed women with different contrast. I know Kitchener said that Ethereal were low contrast but it kind of rub me the wrong way. Ethereals comes from mythology/arts mainly, and what a being from those worlds could look like would differ from a continent to another and would be closer to the beauty of the area. It would eliminate a big amount of the population too, by extension.
    It kind of feel like the "Blond is the good girl and the Brunette is the mean one" which in many ways perpetuate a bad ideology.
    When thinking of Lisa Bonet, we cannot deny her other-worldly qualities.
    The topic of essences is just so rich and interesting, it's always great to see it evolve as a better tool to help people!
    I can't wait for part 2!

      Totally agree! I am mix with ethereal - main essence. This style fits me best, but everyone keep talking about blond hair and light colours. And i have fair skin but dark brown hair. It´s so confusing for me when my body "fit in there" but not "colours" of my body if it make sense. :(

    No, but you are so correct on the ethereal versus gamine effect. I literally couldn’t put my foot on it, but you described it perfectly. What I noticed is that they give off certain essence of ethereal so much so that a lot of flamboyant gamines have some sort of ethereal essence and can pull eclectic ethereal looks I like to think of it as the pixie

Gosh I find this essence the hardest to dress everyday in, especially working with children (long gowns and flowy pant suits are a bit of a tripping hazard!). I agree about the long hair too, though not everyone has the right hair texture and context to pull it off. Very good video! a request for your next video (as I have 40% ethereal in my blend), please add some more casual wear, workwear, and day to day wear examples. I get that all those amazing otherworldly dresses are amazing on anyone with E, but unfortunately they're pretty unwearable when standing in the middle of a classroom having to teach art and woodworking and stuff or when going to my choir, they might be good for a performance twice a year, but the regular rehersals are way more casual

    • @elyssa_aesthetic
      @elyssa_aesthetic  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yeah, it seems to a highly sought after beauty aesthetic these days. But after 100’s of analysis I’ve found it to be fairly rare in a high degree. Sometimes there’s women who have a smaller percentage of Ethereal beauty and need that little boost Ethereal styling principles to bring everything together. And, yes, your beauty is fairly opposite of the Ethereal but equally beautiful ✨

    Actually, I think ethereals often need texture and patterns. It just needs to be subtle and low contrast. If that is neglected then clothing looks off because it lacks the ethereal tone. It is one reason why an ethereal looks so odd in a standard tee. Also, I would say the coloring section is not particularly helpful here for me. I am basically a true winter while also being almost 100% ethereal.

    • @edennis8578

      I have ethereal as the third part of my blend (dramatic/romantic/ethereal), but I get it--patterns and texture add another dimension to a basic outfit no matter your essence(s). And in my case I'm Dark Autumn, so presenting as the stereotype of ethereal in pale washed out colors isn't an option for me either. I find I do well in oversized abstract patterns, flowing textures, and color schemes borrowed from Italian Renaissance paintings. (The metallics for my season really help to emphasize all three of my essences: Dramatic looks all the more striking, romantic the more glamorous, and ethereal comes leaping out with a bang.)
      Sorry about the mini-essay--and I do hope you find ways to square your essence with your True Winter palette!

    Interesting thing to put ethereal to Yang instead of Yin and it,s mindblowing too it being between natural and dramatic bc this was my choice as my kibbe body type too! I think though it has more softness compared to naturals. I think the classification should be changed it just doesnt fit.

    You don't think that a small statured person can have the ethereal essence at all? I've seen people who are sculpted yet delicate that in a way resembles fairies and other worldly creatures that popped out of a book. Has the same juxtaposition within their lines, bones and features. What do you think?

    • @elyssa_aesthetic
      @elyssa_aesthetic  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

      Oh I definitely do! Stick around for part 2…..a client of mine who is very small in stature is as close as they come to pure ethereal! The key is statuesque and elongated (or the appearance of elongation)

    Elyssa, your "inverted gamine" and "Elongated S" descriptions had me sitting bolt upright! until this video I had failed to find a reference anywhere to the kind of tall Flamboyant Natural that I am. I seem to be a juxtaposition of features which shouldn't be together in a FN. For example tiny wrists attached to wide short hands, a tiny waist joining hips and shoulders which are 2 dress sizes wider, yet a flattish chest and flat rear, a long torso and short legs, circle-arched eyebrows in an otherwise yang face, the list goes on....
    Not all your recommendations would work for me, so I doubt I'm a pure ethereal; but many of them explain why I'm drawn to soft draping despite having a yang physique, and why my #1 favorite style of clothing to wear, and what i always get the compliments on, is floor-length dresses. Hmm, maybe I should lean into that more :)

    • @elyssa_aesthetic
      @elyssa_aesthetic  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It most definitely sounds like you have some ethereal beauty! And the difference between what some call a FN and an Ethereal is very stark. Naturals will not have the statuesque majesty that pure ethereal a have. And some sense of weightlessness is a must for ethereal beauty. The list goes on but I use ethereal as a main beauty archetype in my system because I believe it’s 100% necessary in order to fully communicate some individuals beauty. I can’t wait for you to see part 2…..I think you’ll really connect with the examples!

      @@elyssa_aesthetic Thank you so much for your kind reply Elyssa. Although I can talk about my physical build, I don't think I can be objective enough about my body to say whether I give the impression of being "statuesque" or "weightless". In fact I am quite sure no-one could assess their own "quality", even if they were to watch a video of themselves. I guess that's where an unbiased observer such as yourself comes in!
      Your video made me realise that when (as it appears to me) the dressing recommendations for "my type" only apply to me to a certain extent, it doesn't really matter whether my body can be categorised as a recognisable type, or whether my body is unique. Either way, I still have to make in-the-moment choices about what to wear. I will always have to dress to accomodate my "tallness" plus "breadth" plus "long torso" plus "x-shaped torso" , and yang flesh. But it's fun to look closely at all the types, to see whether there are design features I might consider borrowing for myself. Ethereal sounds like a look I already have as part of my wardrobe; so I'm looking forward to Part 2!

    As far as I know ethereals are on the Yin side of the spectrum, like romantics and ingenue . Gamines are Yang. You kinda switched it up. They are also called ethereal yin, being the most yin essence (though it does kinda flow back into yang). Gamines are kibbe yin (body type), while in kitchener (essence) yang.

    • @elyssa_aesthetic
      @elyssa_aesthetic  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Yeah I did switch it up! The way I consider beauty within some of the archetypes is different than some beauty and style professionals. I wouldn’t say it’s vastly different, but you’ll find slight variations from stylist to stylist. I consider Ethereal large scale, sculpted mature yin which resides in the yang side of the spectrum and Gamines small scale youthful yang which resides on the yin side of the spectrum. I know it’s popular to consider ethereal the most yin and angelic. That viewpoint seems to have been made popular by Kitchener. But just like McJimsey considered Romantic to be in the middle of the spectrum and Kibbe considered it most yin, there is room for personal creative liberties to be taken ✨ That’s really been the beauty of creating my own method and typing system; I get interpretive and creative freedom 💛 And it’s been so interesting to see a lot of individuals get professionally typed by a few different stylists in this niche (the archetype systems) and get varying results and recommendations.

    ok so ethereals are in some way the opposite of gamines like for example they "feels" like "Grown Up Wise Woman" (yang + ying) as to gamines who feel like "Little Childish Boys" (ying +yang)?

    • @elyssa_aesthetic
      @elyssa_aesthetic  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      In so many words, yes.
      Ethereals are large scale mature yin and Gamines are small scale youthful yang. They both have a beautiful contrast/contradiction to their beauty.

    I dont see why you classified angelina jolie as ethereal. To me, she looked memorable as tomb raider and in other bold looks like that - mrs smith for example. Striking, athletic. I would say she is dramatic, natural and romantic. Yes she looks good in those goddess like dresses, but nothing in her screams ethereal.
