Did Jesus Drink REAL Wine or Grape Juice? PT 1 | Real Life Hard Questions

- Answering a question sent in by a viewer, the HARD QUESTIONS panel asks, "Is there Scripture to clarify if the wine Jesus drank was fermented or grape juice?" From there, the discussion turns to the cultural significance of alcohol and how should Christians handle these issues.
I will offer a syllogism:
Grapes ripen in the Northern Hemisphere in late summer/ early fall.
Israel is in the Northern Hemisphere.
Grape juice without a preservative will become wine in less than 14 days.
Winemakers of the biblical era had no preservatives to keep grape juice from fermenting.
The Last Supper was in April.
Therefore: Jesus the Christ, the True Vine, was indeed a wine drinker- alcohol was what kept the beverage stable enough to prevent spoilage.

Nice try, but obviously Jesus synthesized special non alcoholic wine from water as He did in John 2 ;)
Unfortunately, many Christians' objection to all alcohol consumption is not based in scripture or logic. While this may convince some people, I fear that many will find a way to excuse it away - because since scripture doesn't explicitly state that the wine contained ethanol, who's to say that isn't what happened? And since we can't say definitively that this isn't what happened, then why not say definitively that it is what happened, because all events in scripture must be interpreted through the higher assumption that my conviction - all consumption of alcohol is wrong - is true, rather than forming my convictions based off of a straightforward interpretation of scripture?
This is why the concept of Christian liberty is so important; but of course, even that has its complications. Some people view the drinking of alcohol as, in principle, the same as eating food sacrificed to idols, and so the concept of Christian liberty applies. But some view it as being as cut and dried as something like cold blooded murder or adultery, so they aren't willing to extend the principles of Christian liberty to those who practice it. All we can do is try our best to follow scripture as we understand it, and help others to do the same, and ask for forgiveness when we get it wrong; bearing with those whose weak faith causes them to condemn others for doing things which God has not condemned; knowing that, despite our best efforts, we might have some deeply held convictions of our own that are not completely based in scripture. Love covers a multitude of sins.
Personally, I don't drink alcohol. I've had problems with it in the past, and as a young person in America, I feel it sends a bad message; since so few of my peers drink responsibly, it could give the impression that I am down with drunkenness. I would recommend that those who do not currently drink, refrain from taking it up; this seems wise to me. When my Christian friends drink, it makes me very uncomfortable; because of my past experiences, and my own preferences for consuming alcohol, it is hard to separate in my mind responsible consumption from unbridled drunkenness and partying.
But I have Christian friends who drink. Some of them do so irresponsibly - which further strengthens my knee-jerk reaction that alcohol should be avoided at all costs, that the idea that someone can exercise self control and drink in moderation is a myth, that nothing good can come from it. But some of them do it responsibly; I know from personal experience that some people genuinely have no desire to get drunk, even though they enjoy a drink on occasion. I have known some for many years who have, in the entire time that I've known them, been "drinkers", but never drunkards. To the pure all things are pure. For some it has even been a means of maintaining a relationship with the lost; getting a beer with an old friend every now allows them to stay in contact. Staying in contact increases the opportunity to witness; to show how God is working in their life. And of course, the most reasonable reading of scripture is that alcohol abuse, not alcohol itself, is sinful, and that Jesus, His disciples, and many Christians over the years drank wine with alcohol. Of course, at the time the Scriptures were written, there was no word for ethanol, or understanding that this was the chemical which caused intoxication; meaning, if one really wishes to, they can perform all kinds of mental gymnastics and make all kinds of assumptions that aren't explicitly stated in scripture, to come to the conclusion that Jesus never consumed alcohol; but it's hardly the most reasonable reading of scripture.
And that is what I wish for the people on here that are convinced that all consumption of alcohol is wrong. Stop declaring unclean what God has declared clean. This truly is an issue of food sacrificed to idols; and it is good and righteous to abstain from something that will cause you to struggle - but not good and righteous to then declare that same thing off limits for those who don't share your conviction, and to judge those who practice it. At the same time, those who do practice drinking should be gracious of those whom it causes to struggle; all things are permissible, but not all things are beneficial. Cracking open a cold one with the boys isn't a problem if your conscience doesn't convict you; but if one of those boys is very uncomfortable with alcohol, and has communicated that fact to you, maybe save it for another time.
@@Anonymous-so1ho I appreciated reading your reply; quite refreshing. I have my own vineyard, and have hundreds of gallons of wine at my disposal. Rather than choosing to imbibe until I vomit, I sip one serving a day and thank the Lord for such a wonderful, stable beverage. Should I say something offensive, or act out in an ungodly manner that is consequent to my sin and my unclean nature-- not the beverage. Thanks again for the exchange.
But you don't understand. HE PERFORMED A MIRACLE. He can turn water into FRESH RIPENED GRAPE JUICE no matter what time of year because he is God. Now that is amazing. That is something to celebrate. It also tasted far better.
The grape harvest goes through July. With no refrigeration in biblical times and the last supper being in April I can assure you that the wine was fermented.
But Jesus performed a miracle. A fresh harvest was a great thing and to have fresh grape juice was something to celebrate. Jesus could have changed the water into the "fresh grape harvest" juice because why wouldn't he?

The greek word they used for wine back then also means grape juice.. so Jesus could have made water into grape juice. I think Jesus won't want his people to get drunk from the wine he made.
Having a degree in Viticulture and Enology, I love hearing people make ridiculous explanations about how grape juice was preserved year round 2000 years ago.

They would filter the juice through strainers and remove the protein (albumen); this would leave no yeast for fermentation.
Putting fresh juice in jars and sealing it with pitch, placing the jars in cool pools of water, and keeping the temperature at a certain degree so the yeast would not multiply.
Placing fresh juice in jars and burning sulfur dioxide over the jars.
Dried raisins, (boiled for juice).
Boiling fresh juice down into a syrup called dibs; later they would dilute it with water and drink it as a beverage.

@@JohnnyYuma405 It can also be boiled. I believe the straining was also to remove the chunks of grape which had the yeast attached. Kinda like a mask which removes droplets which have smaller viruses attached. In any case, boiling will kill the yeast, and incidentally will also cause alcohol to evaporate.
It’s funny as they said, “they drank wine at church and they didn’t get drunk”. Where’s the limit that you call “drunk”? Many drunk people can act very normal that others wouldn’t notice. There’s no such thing as drinking alcohol and not being affected by it.
No. My extended family drinks. Most of them can have a small amount of alcohol without effect. Alcohol is processed in the liver. Intoxication occurs when the amount or speed overwhelms the liver.

I agree wholeheartedly, I am a born again Christian/ AND I AM STRUGGLING BADLY!!! ANY ALCOHOL IS A POISONOUS SUBSTANCE TO OUR BODY!!!!! The bible tells us that: our bodies are the temple of GOD!!!! I DO NOT CONDONE JESUS turning water into wine/ the bible says: that at the wedding the people were well drunk / then JESUS turns water into more wine!!!!! JESUS was a perfect human/ well I’m sorry BUT/ a perfect human would NOT condone the drinking of ANYTHING that would be poisonous to our bodies. Jesus was without sin. He did not drink fermented alcohol in any form because that would be sin. The Bible says in Proverbs don't even look upon the wine when it is red in the glass. There is a difference between juice and fermented wine. The Bible speaks many times against drunkenness. Jesus would not have created a fermented form of alcohol causing people to sin drinking it. It is not the character of God to tempt anyone to sin.

If you know here where it says, most people serve the good wine first, and then after people have drunk freely, the inferior wine.... anyone who has had a little bit too much wine and gotten a little bit tipsy or drunk can tell you that the reason this was done was because after you have become a little bit tipsy and drunk you can no longer tell the difference between the good wine and the bad wine so it is safe to say the wine was extremely alcoholic..... it is most likely the same wine that Noah drunk in the Old Testament after the flood had subsided and his son's found him so drunk that he was passed out in a cave..... look that one up: Noah, a man of the soil, proceeded a to plant a vineyard. 21When he drank some of its wine, he became drunk and lay uncovered inside his tent....

And we can safely stay that Middle Eastern wine is very strong and it is still made in a very similar old fashioned way.... and this would be the same wine Jesus used at The Last Supper when he said to his disciples take this all of you and drink of it, for is the Chalice of my Blood, shed for you and for the many, and for the remission of sins..... the new Covenant sealed in my Blood.....
Now, I am not advocating for getting drunk or drunken behaviour, but this is just to point out that the wine was not just grape juice, but alcoholic and alcoholic enough to get one drunk.....
The best wine is the freshest, not fermented. Do you know how drunk you have to be to not know what something tastes like? When Christ calls us to be sober, it is not just in the spiritual sense. Anyone who is given to alcohol knows, your inhibitions, judgement, and senses go out the window. Whenever Jesus speaks of wine concerning His blood, it is 'new' wine.
@dark-sayings You actually don't need to be that drunk at all, for your taste to be inhibited. This can start happening after the first few glasses, and I've been there and done that myself, particularly in my clubbing days before I gave up a life of sin.
When Jesus refers to new wine 🍷 He is not speaking about physical new wine, but rather talking about His (the) New Covenant He is bringing about by His [New] Sacrifice, Death and Resurrection is bringing about. He is the New Lamb of God, as He is referred to by John the Baptist in scripture(as opposed to the old lamb sacrificed in Egypt that freed the Hebrews from Pharaoh and slavery). He frees us from Slavery to sin, death, and Satan. The New Covenant also refers to His New Law of Love that He brings about by His Passion, Death and Resurrection as opposed to the Old Covenant, the old Jewish Laws and Sacrificial animal practices which were a mere typology and preparation for His New Passover Sacrifice which He brought about in the Upper Room which transformed the old Passover/Covenant into the New (which made Present His Sacrifice, Death and Resurrection He would undergo on Good Friday and Easter Sunday, (including a New Priesthood being the Apostles and their descendants, not by a bloodline like the Levites, but by the guidance of the Holy Spirit as in Acts 1. 23-27 (where Matthias was given to take over the office of Judas Iscariot who died by his own hand due to despairing rather than turning to God's Mercy), which would have also involved the laying on of hands, not specifically mentioned here , but in other parts of the Acts).
So it has nothing to do with physical new wine. But the New Covenant and New Law that He was bringing about.
Also as someone who worked with, for a brief times in my teens, a Serbian family Who used to make wine the old-fashioned way by crushing grapes under your feet, the longer you let the wine ferment in barrels kept in a dark cool place, the better it tasted. If you got impatient and went to try and have some of this wine to early, it tasted horrible. That's why even to this day, the older the wine, and the longer it has been allowed to mature, the more expensive it is, and the smoother and the better the flavor..... Wine gets better with age! Hopefully, like you and me 🤣 😂

You may be right but this still does not change the fact that even Jesus Himself drank wine. Luke 7:33-34 For John the Baptist came neither eating bread nor drinking wine, and you say, ‘He has a demon!’ The Son of Man came eating and drinking, and you say, ‘Look at this glutton and drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and of sinners!’
Tom Fisher in dictionary 55yrs ago wine was defined as fermented AND NON fermented. why would they take that out of the dictionary now? JESUS was SINLESS. he hung around drunkards and the lije to CHANGE Them NOT to keep thetm in their sin.

Which wine? Because it says don't drink the wine when it is red (alcoholic), and the new wine comes from the presses. Alcohol is the wine of Sodom (Deut. 32) as opposed to the pure blood of the grape which represents the blood of Jesus. @@fishersofmen4727

Wine was an integral part of Jewish culture. Jesus did drink wine. All the Biblical Patriarchs did drink wine.
The Bible does not condemn drinking of wine itself. But it does condemn drunkenness.

The 'wine' that Jesus presented at the wedding was 'new wine' - fresh from the grape - which is why they were so surprised when it was out of season.
This is WHY people NEED a good "concordance" and a lot of "cross-referencing of scriptures, for issues like these...
It is OK if you don't feel comfortable drinking a small-moderate amount of alcohol once in a while, but it is sinful to impose your own conscience onto another as "doctrine". Independant Fundamental Baptists, not ALL but many, seem to adhere to this false doctrine of "any amount of alcohol is a sin".
Wine CAN indeed refer to either unfermented or fermented grape juice. It is language and CONTEXT which dictates the truth on each mention.
The wine that Jesus made was most CERTAINLY alcoholic, here is why...
Look at the language structure and the uses in context of the word "wine"_"oinos"(G3631) and the word "drunk"_"methyo`". Look at their Greek definitions, uses in scripture as well as the context in which they are used.
First. let's look at the passage "John 2:10", the wedding miracle at Cana...
Let's state the context for the partial scripture of John 2:10 before taking a look at this study. Jesus had just commanded His disciples to fill the water pots with water and draw out the water, which Jesus turned to wine, and bring it to the master of the feast...
"And saith unto him, Every man at the beginning doth set forth good *WINE* ; and when men have *WELL DRUNK* , then that which is worse: but thou hast kept the good *WINE* until now."
John 2:10
Let's focus first on the word "wine" which comes from the Greek word "oinos"(G3631).
Oinos[G3631]-- primary word (wine) , from Hebrew origin "yayin" H3196-- to effervesce by quality of fermentation. Alcohol, wine, winebibber.
To further understand this word, let us look at the uses of this word in scripture. We will look at three passages.
"And be not drunk with *WINE* , wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit..."
Ephesians 5:18
Same word, oinos(G3631) used in a command by Paul to NOT be intoxicated with wine.
"And no man putteth new *WINE* into old bottles: else the new *WINE* doth burst the bottles, and the *WINE* is spilled, and the bottles will be marred: but new *WINE* must be put into new bottles."
Mark 2:22
Same word "oinos" used in a parable about the new covenant using the symbology of wine's fermenting qualities. This is illustrated by the fact that "the bottles BURST" from the alcoholic fermentation qualities...
"For he shall be great in the sight of the Lord, and shall drink neither *WINE* nor strong drink; and he shall be filled with the Holy Ghost, even from his mother's womb."
Luke 1:15
Same word "oinos" used here as a command for John the baptist's lifestyle of abstaining from intoxicating beverages as a prophet to prepare the Messiah's path before Him...
Next, we will look at the word "drunk" in John 2:10.
Drunk G3184: methyo: to drink to intoxication, get drunk. To make or be made drunken.
see 1 Corinthians 5:11(methysos)
" But now I have written unto you not to keep company, if any man that is called a brother be a fornicator, or covetous, or an idolater, or a railer, or a *DRUNKARD* , or an extortioner; with such an one no not to eat."

Drunkard: "Methysos" G3183(from root word [methyo] "G3184") : Tipsy, a sot. Drunkard/alcoholic.(see John 2:10)
Before some joker tries to pull the "you're just trying to justify your sinful carnal desires!!" card, THINK AGAIN! I haven't had a DROP of ethanol in ANY form for over 11 years. Not because I CAN'T, but because I choose not to so as not to make weaker brothers stumble. Some people are weak in the faith and do not fully understand the truth of this matter. They feel "offended" regarding the blessing of alcohol/wine and their conscience is weak in this matter. On THEIR behalf, not mine, I choose to abstain so to walk in love. If I ever DO choose I would like a glass of wine, I shall ONLY do so PRIVATELY in my own home and away from the presence of a weaker brother's conscience...

Like you we choose not to, not because we think it’s wrong to occasionally have wine but we want to be set apart this for the Lord. That’s it. Yes you're right ligtd. The bible says each man must make up his own mind whether he wants to drink wine or not. Although we are never to cause a brother to stumble. Let no man judge you in what you eat or drink.
I agree with you 100% . We have to agree that culturally it was ok to drink fermented wine. It was not considered a sin. Jesus did not die yet.

John the Baptist wasn't eating or drinking anything from the grape and they said he had a devil , so when Jesus drank and ate products of the grape (not alcoholic wine), they called Him a drunkard because they were false accusers, not because he drank alcoholic wine. You have to understand the Jewish culture of the time and the Nazarite vow. They knew that Proverbs condemned alcohol. (Look not on the wine when it is red (alcoholic))
As far as I know they accused Jesus of drinking wine but I haven’t heard anywhere that says he drank it. And I’m 100% sure he never was drunk .

Amen! Because I don’t understand why would an angel come to tell John the Baptist’s parents in Luke chapter 1 verses 13 to 15 for him not to drink any kind of alcohol, but that not stand for our God our Lord Jesus Christ our savior!?

Mosaic laws priests did not drink alcohol. Jesus was a Jew and followed the Mosaic law. If he did drink alcohol he would have been stoned. Jesus is also a High Priest and tells man that we are priests and Ambassadors on earth, which means Christians as Priests should also not drink alcohol.

You are referring to Leviticus 10:9... Mosaic law priests were free to consume alcohol when they were not serving the Temple (or in the tent of meeting). Please do no not proof-text the scriptures.
It is not drinking alcohol thats matter, its about drunkeness or excessive drinking of wine ... that is prohibited.. About wine with no alcohol, Noah get drunk in OT, in NT a christian get drunk while waiting for Paul before the fellowship get started.. What my view is that during the old days, wine has alcohol.. but i do not know if they are already producing non alcoholic wine.. Do we think if we drink a glass of wine during our meal we will commit sin.. Drunkeness or too much eating is prohibited...
Jesus said he came to them drinking and eating and they called him a drunk and a glutton.
He also said that what goes into the body is not what defiles the body it's what comes out that comes from the heart. He said what you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it to God.
It's different to drink a little than to be a drunkard.

@Jesus Saves absolutely right! That’s the verse that I tell people who think Jesus made alcoholic wine at the wedding. Jesus would be breaking the law if he did. Once you read the entire bible on the subject and the Lord gives you wisdom and opens your eyes, you’ll find out that alcohol is the DECIEVER. Is it’s the venom of vipers and dragons Deut 32:33. And who is the decider and the dragon refer to in the Bible? Yep the devil who deceiveth the whole world rev 12:9. The whole world is under it. Even Solomon in all his wisdom told us , that it’s not wise if you get deceive by alcohol proverbs 20:1 It’s not for kings to drink wine or strong drink Prov 31:4. But are we Kings? Lol yeap Rev 1:6 Now, for all of people saying that is ok to drink a little (moderation) well I got news too from the Apostle Paul. He says there is no such a thing as moderation when you drink alcohol Ephesians 5:18. There is always excess. For communion we should use wine because that is what it says. As For the argument about using wine it might make one relapse let us not forget being a Christian has a lot to do with self control and our father does not lead us into temptation but deliver us from evil. I never read where Jesus dranked wine. He turned water to wine, but it never said he dranked it. The Bible also say touch not taste not handle not which is harmful to your flesh. There are scriptures that indicate He did indeed drink wine...two instances I know of....the key word being indicate. What we do know is that the water He turned into wine was given to guests who in many cases were already somewhat intoxicated. I think that's a red flag to anyone preaching 100% abstinence for all here. I think God has this here for the shock value, but that's just my take. As for harming the flesh, it's pretty clear now that wine, and even other adult beverages, taken in moderation and with a meal, is GOOD for your flesh. Same for dark chocolate and coffee too!

Not sure why he said grape juice don't make the heart glad. ALL of Gods fruits would make the heart glad. I have often wondered what it would be like in heaven and my scenario is that exactly that, that everything is absolutely amazing and beautiful. This would include a piece of fruit. You would not need it to survive but because God loves you so much, God constantly tries to please you and you love God so much that you are in constant amazement of everything God does. So yes if you had a grape "juice" it would be the most incredible amazing juice you have ever tasted. And not only that, you would feel as if you were tasting it for the first time everytime you tasted it. If you saw a waterfall, it would feel like it was the very first time even if you saw it countless times. After all, what could you possibly give to God that created everything? Your love and adoration. You talk God creates. God loves you so much that God makes all the things pleasing to you. So is it possible for the misinterpretation of wine in the bible? Yes. In fact I think they may have purposely changed that over time to serve their own selfish wants as I am sure they have done about other things in the bible.

John the Baptist wasn't eating or drinking anything from the grape and they said he had a devil , so when Jesus drank and ate products of the grape (not alcoholic wine), they called Him a drunkard because they were false accusers, not because he drank alcoholic wine. You have to understand the Jewish culture of the time and the Nazarite vow. They knew that Proverbs condemned alcohol. (Look not on the wine when it is red (alcoholic))

First of all Grapes naturally have yeast in it and of course sugar even if you didn’t want to make it to wine it was very easy for grapes to just ferment into wine, without the proper refrigeration it is impossible in biblical times to even try to keep juice because if you would store grape juice because of the heat and the sugar and yeast that grapes have it will just naturally turn into wine so my brother do your research because I’m not making this up

Yes Christ taught us that drinking alcohol is good. To be a true Christian even requires it.
Christ said in Luke 5:37-39 "And no man putteth new wine (grape juice) into old bottles (brittal leather animal skins) ; else the new wine will burst the bottles, and be spilled, and the bottles shall perish (from the stretching caused by the fermentation process) But new wine must be put into new bottles; and both are preserved. No man also having drunk old wine straightway desireth new: for he saith, The old is better."

Joh 6:54 "Whoso eateth my flesh , and drinketh my blood, hath eternal life; and I will raise him up at the last day." Drinking wine represents the blood of Christ, not grape juice. We know Christ died on Passover and Passover is six months after grape harvest. Grape juice only take about 2 weeks to turn to wine. Therefore we know for certain that Christ was using the real fermented wine which he said once you taste you should not desire unfermented grape juice again! It is sad that most Protestants are against the teachings of Christ.

It was wine because they asked why have you kept the best wine for last? People would serve the good wine then when everyone was gettin happy they serve the cheap wine. Jesus may not have drank it but it was still wine. The Bible says it is wine so is the Bible lying?
The good wine was the new wine (grape juice). Old wine becomes vinegary unless you take special precautions to turn into alcoholic wine. It's not as easy as you might think to make alcoholic wine.
