    You picked a winner. Engine good forever with proper maintenance. Watch to not add weighty accessories. Mine had 395000 when I gave it to my nephew and it's digging Colorado just like Kentucky! Good truckn!

    Its my camper's younger brother! Mine is a 1985, with the mid kitchen and all around windows out the back. I don't have the front bed window though. I have a few things I need to fix up on mine as well. It kind of comes with the territory of owning these older campers. Hope those renovations go through without too much problems, and the camper serves you well for some time. Safe journeys out there!

      Front bed window over the cab on these as well as class C motorhomes are notorious for leaks/rot. You're better off not having one!

    • @Jimfoxyboy
      @Jimfoxyboy 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@chloesamclutch While the extra lighting would have been nice, it comes with a trade off. Oh, I know! Plus, I'd have gone nuts trying to deal with curtains for such a window. Speaking of leaks, hope your roof vents are still doing OK. My camper still had the original plastic ones, which cracked a bit with age.

    Don't waste your money repairing an old fridge. I use mine for storage. Buy a heavy-duty icebox and throw a thick blanket over it while your travelling. Water repair is very easy. Make sure all the fittings are tested under pressure. I have an inverter in my 8-foot camper. Buy a shower tent room and USB power pump for under a 100 USD from Amazon. Have your furnace serviced? The thermocouple is a moving part and you will wish you did in the cold season.

    Pretty nice rig ! Toyota and a Slumber Queen 🇨🇦👍. I have a 1979 Okanagan🇨🇦 8’-6” in original condition. I was surprised to find it was pre-wired for a fantastic fan over the table area when I took out the simple vent. If you have the aluminum roof skin, make sure to use only the proper rv lap sealant(on a warm day) (Dicor is one brand) when re-sealing any edges or vents, silicone is big no no. I’m guessing the original “happy jack” jacks were leaking and thus were removed. I got mine re-built , but kits are available for a d.i.y. project if you are handy and find a second hand set. Enjoy the adventure, and happy trails. 🌲

    • @JonathanYentch
      @JonathanYentch  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That’s sweet! Now I’m really hoping once I pop off the vent it’ll be pre wired for the electric fan haha. Bingo with the Happy Jacks. They are leaking but they still work. I’m looking into getting new seals for them so I don’t have to a buy a set since they’re so pricey

    Toyota truck cool that 3.4 v6 is definitely working probably needs a re gear if it hasn’t already.& need a extra trans cooler routed after the factory one on radiator get the Hayden 678. all that weight Custom Deaver or Alcan leaf springs is your best bet. Old Man Emu shocks w 883 springs up front are great option for you...the proper research & oem parts could make that thing absolutely bullet proof overland rig

    If you ever encounter water damage use 2x2s, 2x4 and oak plywood to fix and strengthen it up. Trust me DO NOT USE CHIP PLYWOOD.
    Also you should clean and paint the roof with RV rubber roof coating. Make sure the putty tape (forgot the name rn) in the corners where the corners are connected it solid as well as around key areas. Make sure to caulk seal every corner of your camper, especially the corners and windows. Use clear see through caulk that can easily be removed when it's time to add a new seal.
    Enjoy your rig and have fun!!

    I've been living in my '93 Elkhorn slide-in truck camper for 3 1/2 months now. (Now into the weather and cold of northern Utah). It's awesome! It sits in the back of a 2000 Ford F-250 long bed with airbag suspension. The Elkhorn is 19' long with a side-door entry, full bath (with separate shower!). Looking forward to seeing what you do with yours! Enjoy! (Subscribed)...

I loved it/ It slept 4, and had a bath and shower, with doors. Those old campers were made to last. I wish I still had the camper. God bless you, you are such a positive person. Good things will happen.Just do whats right. God will guide your steps. Be happy, be safe. Love from Utah.I subscribed.

    Your camper may be used, but it's in super good shape/no leaks or water stains. Just get some contemporary fabrics to replace those curtains. You could get RV blinds direct from manufacturers. Then add some cool 12 volt led lighting and a solar charged lithium battery to power everything. I use a 540 watt OKPRO with a Zoombros 330 plugged into it as a slave battery.

    40 years ago I lived in a truck camper for 2 years. When it’s cold, the heat will stay up at the ceiling. Might want to get rid of the storage I I’ve the frig and put a bigger frig in. I have a boat frig, 2 way. Most of the time I was not level but the frig stil worked. You should have an escape hatch, usually over the bed. Keep an eye on weather reports and know exactly how high you are. Back road watch for low branches , especially after a snowfall or rain. Wood and aluminum don’t take hits very well. Camper should have its own battery. Good luck.

    • @paulne1514
      @paulne1514 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ps, it looks like the truck is lifted a bit.wait til you get hit with cross winds when driving. If possible a little fatter Truck tires. Know your weight when fully loaded, fuel water people everything. Scrap yards have scales, mite coat you $10. Watch coming down long grades, with that weight you mite get brake fade then no brakes. Shame you didn’t get one with a bathroom. If you ever upgrade to a bigger camper, I’d strongly recommend you get a better truck. My camper was set up for 12 volts. I put an evaporator on the roof. It fits in the hatch. It looks like an AC put in backwards. It makes the inside 10-15 degrees cooler than outside. But you need a water source. Had 2 20lb propane bottles. In the summer, a bottle would last me a month. In the winter, a week. Keep drinking water separate. I don’t think you will last more than 3 months with a girl along and NO bathroom, unless you stay at campgrounds that have bathrooms. In 2 years of living in mine, I stayed at a campground 1 day! That was in Vegas at the circus circus.

    I lived 8 years in my 30 ft travel trailer built by Thor. Word of advice, be sure to open a vent on your ceiling while using the propane stove. This will keep the moisture from building up around the windows when burning propane. Same goes for your oven and heater. This occurs only when it's cold outside.. I hope you do know that the refrigerator we'll run on electric as well as propane. At least mine did. You are right about the price of replacing one. I finally found one on sale at Camping World. Did I buy it, nope! I bought a small one at Lowe's that runs on electric only. Had to put in a little fascia work around the refrigerator but worked great. I used dry ice in the freezer section when there was no power. Caution: dry ice will burn you if you're not wearing thick gloves ! You didn't show the bathroom. Get yourself a 5 gallon bucket, trash bags, toilet seat, and air freshener and you'll have it made. 😃😀

    It looks like you need to raise the camper a little. It should not rest on the sides of the bed, and there should be 2 inches between the roof of the cab and the bottom surface of the bed area. You can use a bed matt, plywood or whatever. The lightest is the dense rigid foam board used in construction. Not the Styrofoam insulation board, but the dense structural foam used in construction. It is usually red or blue. I went from a shell to a cabover with no bathroom or built-ins. It had beds, lights and water, but heat was a Mr. Buddy, Coleman stove and so forth. Now I have a Lance with everything: Generator, stove, oven, AC, heat, fridge with separate freezer. I only live in it for short bursts, but it is great. Your camper looks good for a small truck. I agree with other's suggestions that you get air bags for the rear suspension.

    Truck bed campers are great! They have been very underated, but are making a huge resurgence. Congrats. Be very careful not to add too much weight, consider a solar system, and right away get a hitch-step that you can get cheap from Harbor Freight that will make it a lot easier to get in and out of the camper. Good luck and I know you will have fun with the mods, and being on the road with it.

    Jonathan, I'm so glad you decided to buy this. You really needed some space and maybe a real bed for your back. I think you'll be much safer, although people do notice campers more than just trucks and cars. You're a go getter, you won't have any real issues. I'm jealous!!!

      Jonathan, it's really intact to be 35 years old. Just remove the valances and that will automatically update the curtains.

      Good looking truck and camper. Couple of observations; Look into 4 corner camper jacks so you can take it off if you want or need to. They make hydraulic manual jacks or 12volt and some have self leveling options. You'll probably want to raise the camper cab over, where it's touching the truck roof. Lift whole camper by putting 2 2x4's or 2x6's in the truck bed. That will raise the whole camper 2" then maybe slide an inner tube with little air to act as a cushion between camper bed rm and truck cab roof. That fridge should be 12v propane and electric 120. Try it on each power source, propane first. If it's Been off a long time it might take some tweeking to get it going but they're pretty easy to work on, just Google or TH-cam for routine maintenance ideas. Good luck, have fun with it. Solar for LED lites for sure and maybe rig an outside shower of schedule 40 plastic pipe to hold shower water up on the camper roof, paint pipe black for heating by solar. Rig 8' tarps north & south & another east & west for shade and rain water collection with buckets. Use tent stakes with rope to stabilize from wind. You'll have a great time

    Hey Amigo...congrats on the new (to you) camper! I live in my truck camper from April to November full time so I have a bit of experience full timing in these things. For you upgrades I would consider these things...Battery...most important as this is the life of your camper...get a good one...or two. I had two 6 volts which was great...but last year upgraded (after saving for two years) to two lithium and it made a HUGE difference in how I consumed power. That aside...your fridge will be important and needs to work right or you will get lots of spoilage..which can get expensive. If you can get a new propane one that's the best as the new ones just sip propane and work excellent. Get an electronic thermostat. They are super cheap on Amazon, usually one maybe two wires direct replacement and this will save a ton on propane use if you are using your heater. Switch out to LED lighting...this will save your batteries..down from 1.2 watts per bulb use to .002 or something like that for LED. Again, these are super cheap on Amazon and will pay for themselves in the first month easy. Check your roof...look for cracks in sealant or weather stripping...anything that looks sketchy fix, tape over or put sealent on...it's much easier to do this now than after water starts leaking into your camper. Other than that...it's a great life...don't worry about getting everything right...you will probably upgrade in a year or two as you figure out how it works for you and what you would need to make life better. Will be watching how things work out. Have fun!

    You may be happy to know that almost every Station Casino in the Las Vegas area usually allows up to 7 days of overnight camping at the very very back of the parking lots so long as everything is clean, free of trash and discrete (aka don't set up outdoor living or have trash and trash cans or anything like that or they will make you move out the moment they see it) Also when you sign up for the players cards you usually get some free play, and sometimes you win on it ......which can pay for a nice buffet meal ;) as they are pretty inexpensive and AMAZING ----so if you get through the Las Vegas area that is something to consider

    Great project. I have owned a similar camper that I carried on a mini Nissan Frontier and other than driving in strong crosswinds I liked it a lot. I especially appreciated the separate living area from the truck cab. If I owned yours I would remove the old fiberglass insulation and replace it with code board foam for more structural rigidity and better insulating value. Redo all the joints at the same time and worry free for a few years

    Keep that maintenance up on the truck like it's your new found religion. Especially if you're planning to keep that camper permanently on it. Those campers are hell on drivetrains and suspension.
