DION DIMUCCI’S Crazy Session with Producer Phil Spector
Dion DiMucci and Phil Spector worked together on the 1975 album Born to Be With You, which was the result of a lesson in life!
Legendary Rock Hall of Fame innovator shares the most lasting influences on his remarkable life - a life that helped shape the last 60 years of rock and roll history
Dion DiMucci's journey through rock and roll history is as legendary as his hits. As the lead singer of Dion and the Belmonts in the late 1950s, Dion captured the heart of America with chart-toppers like "Runaround Sue", "The Wanderer", and "A Teenager in Love." His later solo success with the profound "Abraham, Martin, and John" in 1968 marked another high, contributing to his twelve gold records. Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, Dion explored folk, blues, and gospel, earning a Grammy nomination in 1985 and an induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1989 alongside icons like the Rolling Stones and Stevie Wonder.
In this compelling collection, Dion shares intimate conversations with close friend Adam Jablin, reflecting on his rise to fame, battles with heroin addiction, a sixty-year marriage, and the influential figures in his music career, including Hank Williams and Bob Dylan.
Featuring over 200 vibrant photos, this book captures not just the life of a music icon but six decades of rock and roll evolution.

My band opened for Dion at Kenny's Castaways around 1971. He was doing a solo act. I knew he was a great singer and writer, but had no idea how good of a blues guitarist he was. Nice guy, too.
You said it, Dion plays all the guitar on Tankfull of Blues, and that album just burns!
He's the real deal.
Dion is a good man. I’m from South Florida, his home for 50 years and everyone there who’s met him speaks well of him.
A true pioneer of rock n roll, with respect. God bless Dion
Dion and his wife were weekly Sunday regulars at my Church in South Florida when I was a teenager! Class act 100%! Always with a smile, always had time to talk with fellow parishioners after Mass was over! His music was before my time but his legacy is timeless! A true living legend!
Dion's the man... Great hearing him expound on his life & also love he is also another clean & sober guy! Big love, D!
Thank you for your kind words!
Dion looks great, met him after a show in Florida. Henheard our 50 Ford was called the Wanderer and came out and took pictures with the car and us. He was so gracious with his time after putting on a great show. Dad was really happy.
Dion and the Belmonts helped me get through my teenager in love years….. Dion is still goin’ and still growin’ ,thankyou sir!
Thank you for your kind words! It's wonderful to hear how Dion's music has impacted your life. His legacy continues to inspire us all!
"Each night I ask / the stars up above / Why Must I Be a Teenager in Love?"
Dion is keeping the Blues alive even at 80 he’s still crushing it and recruiting some of the best rock n blues guitarists around amazing! I’d love to work with him
I'll be 73 next month, born & raised in NYC & have loved his songs & harmonies since I heard The Wanderer - in real time. Dion's been a big influence & inspiration my whole life, & I still get goose-bumps singing his classics with my brother & buddies when we're having fun jamming. I'll be getting his book for my birthday . God bless you amigo ✌❤🙏
Wow. I had no idea what a substantial human being Dion is. To tell you the truth I didn't even know the guy was still alive being my age. This short segment will always come to mind when I hear his name now. Well done.

Dion is my all-time favorite male singer, hands down! It was 1963. I was listening to the radio, switching stations to find something to listen to. I stopped on 77WABC and heard one of the best ever disc jockeys, "Big" Dan Ingram, for the first time. He introduced what has now become my all-time favorite Dion song, "Donna The Prima Donna". This was sometime after he broke up with the Belmonts. He was now being backed up by the just-as-fantastic Del Satins. I was hooked!!!
Yo! Lemme guess...is *_your_* name Donna? 😉😁 I'm Cousin Brucie. No, not _that_ one. The _other_ one. 😄😀😃😉
I can still hear in my mind the Dan Ingram ID that always announced his name on the radio station. I recall back in the 80s when he was playing a song called, I'm Not Lisa. When the female vocalist said I'm Not ----, he inserted his Dan Ingram ID. I never forgot how irreverent that was and it was so funny to me. Dan was around for ages. I think I can still recall by name most of the WMCA and WABC disc jockeys from the 1960s.
@@robbrown4621 And remember the rivalry between the WMCA "Good Guys" and the WABC "All Americans"? I recall when, on WMCA, Len Berry (former Dovells lead singer) sang the lyric "A-B-C", they'd overlay BOOOs as it played. Back then it was a cardinal sin to mention the competition's names or call letters. Now, deejays fondly remember each other right on the air...as mortality sets in. Memories of NYC radio.🤔 (SIGH!) 😁
Big Dan Ingram 👍
Great stuff
Dion is my favorite. My best friend was part of the wall of sound with Phil Spector. He said he would flash all of these guns around and told him that he was going to have a problem some day. Sure enough he did.
John Lennon said Spector was gonna' kill someone someday...
Dion is a legend and a hero of mine!
Absolutely
One of the few '50's -early '60's stars left.
Dion rocks then. He rocks now. Good character, strong man.
Dion is a national treasure
💯
LOVE THIS DION FOREVER
I salute you Dion.
Dion rocks the house ,doo wop takes a lot of talent ,the harmonies ,thanks Dion!
Dion is 85 ... unbelievable! God bless him, still has his health and his marbles.
It's truly remarkable how Dion continues to inspire us all at 85! His talent and wisdom are timeless.
@@artistsonrecord Yes he does. I saw him as a teenager many moons ago. I just turned 67. Thank you for sharing this.
Roots, baby, roots. The real deal.🙂❤🙏
My brother Lou Christie and Dion have dinner occasionally and I must say that Dion is a very good man and friend of my brother's
@@petesacco3255 Lightning’s Striking Again ! ❤️😁👍
A survivor indeed- one day at a time.
Loved Dions music from the beginning . My friend Pete Bennett , Benedetto , worked with Dion at the start and later promoted him . Pete also worked with Phil for years and always warned him about the gun ! When Phil was working with the Beatles Pete said Phil shot a round into the ceiling totally freaking out Yoko . Pete always spoke very highly about Dion .
Phil looks remarkably like Albert Einstein in the thumbnail.
Wow he is in great shape
Smart Shirley Jones heard of Spector's shenanigans and forbid Shawn Cassidy to work with him as Phil requested.
What a trip, good for him
I was in a Florida coffee house and noticed Dion was standing right next to me wearing a Raiders cap. So I asked him if he was a Raiders fan. He said, no, it's black. All my hats are black.
Great show !!!
Thank you so much! I really appreciate your support and I'm thrilled you liked the episode!
Ciao Paesano 😁✌
Just Googled Dion. He is married to the same woman since 1963!
I will be uploading more if my interview with Dion talking about his wife in future episodes, make sure to subscribe and hit the notification tab so you don’t miss
He takes his faith seriously. I saw him on the Catholic tv station EWTN back in the 90's. I think he's been on more than once.
You don't have to be self-destructing to play and write well. Dion is proof. He's sober, but he doesn't suck. And he's not trapped in the past, stuck playing his old repertoire and hating it. He plays the classics, but they reflect whatever kind of group he's using.

Merry Christmas 🎄🎁 Thanks for being here.
@artistsonrecord Back atcha, and my pleasure.
In the book does Dion go into any detail on the 1959 Winter Dance Party? He's the last survivor from that ill-fated tour.
@floydthebarber9956 i live in iowa so ive been to iconic surf many times i wish he would come back one more time but idk that he will all time legend tho props to Dion..
@@floydthebarber9956 he did a video talking about just that. It was pretty long I believe more than thirty minutes.
“I Wonder Why” is the perfect DooWop record.
Absolutely! “I Wonder Why” really captures the essence of DooWop and its timeless charm.
In 1974 Dion opened for Frank Zappa @ Frank's request @ Grand Valley State College in Michigan. Just him & his guitar
WOW, That I did not know!! thank you
I wrote this screenplay years ago that went nowhere. It was set in the 50s in the Bronx and involved a guy and three others who were singing on the streets. I had Dion and the Belmonts in mind. It involved four or five original songs in the DooWop style. I needed an uptempo Doowoper with a booming heralding Bassline as an integral part of the story and of course I Wonder Why popped into mind. To write the song I started singing the I Wonder Why bassline until it started to morph with repetition, then i worked out a melody from that. I made a one man demo of it hoping to get a real DooWop group to do it.
Ran it by a guy named Sammy who sang with the Wrenditions. He shocked me by saying "This one really grabbed me" (he was somewhat dismissive of the others).Musical types DO NOT say anything that strong unless its true. They hear so much thats crap and they learn to be "diplomatic". Welp Sammy and the Wrenditions were going into their busy season and said they'd be able to do it in a few months. I dropped the project and the songs were never recorded.
Lately i dug out the old recording and decided to do it myself as well as I could and I did get a fairly creditable recording down EXCEPT that damn heralding Bassline. The original doesn't ring like I want it to and I've been driving myself nuts trying to gin one up that doesn't sound like the model(I Wonder Why) or what I started with. It's extremely hard when you've got those monster iconic notes in your head. Well it'll likely keep me busy till Spring and work resumes...
sorry, too much fluff in this vid, left me disappointed, only an ad for the real interview.
Sorry to hear it felt like a fluffy marshmallow! I’ll make sure the next one has a little more crunch in it! :)CLICK ON OUR INTERVIEW ON DION TALKING ON THE BELMONTS : th-cam.com/video/5q35ZNhtcIQ/w-d-xo.html
@@artistsonrecord no OFFENSE intended, like i said, i found it only useful as a lead-in to the real i'view..
@markatr6 we always love to hear from you, thanks for the feedback
Make the Woman Love Me is a great cut and song, rest of lp sounds like rehashed Spector wall of sound imitation.
Kudos to Dion and Joe. As far as Spector, he can go pound salt with his "wall of sound/sounds better in mono" nonsense. He basically wanted everything to sound as if it were a symphony orchestra on steroids.
Well, for a time, it WORKED
Dion is a interesting Cat. Hes the ONLY pop star whos music matured as he did.
Have you considered the Beatles?
@mjcruiser4238 i stand corrected.
*One of the few.
Close your eyes & listen to him speak. He sounds like Al Pacino.
