Hey, I was a member of the mod team that developed this mod, and the Eagle Climax was the car I concentrated on the most (it was my baby lol). I put so much time and effort into this car. Easily 2+ years of driving several hours a day. It's great to see someone driving it as it's often overlooked. Especially at tracks like Spa.
You did a great job. This was always (to me) the most beautifully-proportioned F1 car to come out of the 3-litre period....and even beyond. Good stuff, Mr. Bart. :)
This track seems absolutely insane, I can’t imagine the fear that those drivers had while blasting at great speeds down these roads, knowing that any slight turn off the road might mean the end of your race, and possibly the life of you or the lives of spectators
I went to Europe on holiday in 2014, which included that year's Belgian GP. I was driving around looking for a place to park my hire car when I suddenly got a weird feeling of deja vu, like I'd been here before. It took a few seconds before I realised, whoa, this bit of road I'm currently traversing is Burnenville! I was on the old Spa circuit my roomie at uni had introduced me to when we went halvies on a copy of GPL. I spent a good couple of hours driving around photographing the ruins of Stavelot, the Masta Kink, even the house where Sarti took out those kids. It was a one of the great weekends of my life, as not only did I get to see a wet qualifying session at Spa (although I got soaked...), on Sunday I got to sing Advance Australia Fair to the Belgians following Ricciardo's victory. Definitely the trip of a lifetime. So I really want to say, that version of the circuit is GORGEOUS. It is so spot-on accurate, it fills me with joy. That's what it really looks like when you're there, and it makes me so happy to know it's out there. I have to find it. Thankyou to whoever put the time into this version of the track!
Crazy dangerous race. At least 1 fatality and 2 more drivers whose seasons would have at the very least come to an end if they survived. Would have been a pretty dark day. How will this race affect Richie going forward? Rindt: went straight into a building, I imagine he'd have passed away instantly, likely in a fireball. Alexson: very lucky to miss everything, a big drop and a couple big bounces though. Very likely Richie's back would be thrown out and lots of bumps & bruises. Bondurant: bumps & bruises, but overall a surprisingly smooth crash... Clark: it appears the car slowed down before hitting the building, but depending on exactly how hard it could have easily broken his legs or even killed him. I'd say he probably just got away with this one with just broken legs, ending his 1966 season. Hill: slamming at almost full speed into that telephone poll probably would have ended his career, if not his life. Stewart: appears to have luckily slid past the roadside objects. Probably sustained little to no injuries.
Jochen Rindt was leading most of the race in '66 driving like a daredevil (in the wet). It was only when the circuit dried out late in the race that Surtees was able to pass him in the lighter and more powerful Ferrari. After the race Rindt was interviewed if he was disappointed to have missed his 1st GP victory in such a quite unlucky way. He answered that he finally was happy to have survived the race. As always, great to relive that golden era of F1 through GP Legends.
That was an amazing one. I agree with others here: that accident is not on Ritchie. One other thing that occurred to me. Did anyone watch the the Stewart-Hill shunt (in the game, that is) in slow-mo? It looked like Stewart had a mechanical failure, as he slows up and has his hand raised to signal those behind, but Hill didn't get the memo in time and went into the back of him. The other thing about that accident is while Jackie might have come out more or less ok, I don't like how it looks for Graham Hill. Ouch. I think that in the context of 1966 racing, that one's at least a season-ender. Also, that one with Clark looked pretty bad too. I mean, I don't see how someone in a 1966 Lotus is going to be okay after that. Bondurant might have been okay, as long as there was no fire. Pretty grim stuff.
Rindt was crazy there, you had the line and he he turned in, on a high speed corner with a brick house as the barrier. Hopefully Richie isn't too banged up but he might need a few weeks rest.
When I saw the length of the video I immediately said "ruh roh!" Rindt totally hosed you man. But a good job and you walked away, as you said, from an infamous Spa crash.
Great race! Spa can actually be frightening in GPL with the Weather Patch. At my last race there, I could only see 50 metres in front of me. Down the Masta straight, that's quite scary. Jim Clark passed me in the middle of Malmedy before I crashed out going into Masta Kink trying to repass him for the lead. It's very easy to suffer an accident, especially with overly aggressive drivers like Rindt. Keep up the videos, they are very enjoyable, as usual!
The screaming engine to silence feature of motor racing, and GPL in particular, is always so frightening. Few (no?) other sims have captured that 'dancing on a knife edge' nature of high level motorsport quite like GPL. He pinched you slightly, perhaps over-aggressively trying to take advantage of you backing off, and you slightly wandered out (hardly visible in-car but slightly there on the outer cam) then GPL physics did the rest. Unlucky. Monster job dragging that car anywhere near the front. Although of the finishers perhaps only Surtees will be a long term thorn in your side, and all the other main players dropped out with you.
F..... Respect to those killed in this horrific racing incident. Seriously though thank you for keeping this in the race it was so much fun watching you race and I'm sorry you crashed out but I'm so thankful that you kept it in to let us see and hey your mortal just like us and you sometimes things don't go as we plan.
The footage of the first lap of the 66 race from onboard Phil Hill's GT40 in Grand Prix is some of the craziest racing footage I've ever seen. He goes flying past Dan Gurney while they're dodging haybales strewn across the track. And there's helicopter footage of the cars scattered all over masta.
Great racing - edge of the seat stuff! Shows how scary Spa was in '66 - the drivers must've had total confidence in their abilities and no imagination of what could happen. Some of those accidents would have resulted in substantial injuries - Jim Clark had a head on collision with a house, which I don't think is survivable.

Excellent race on the most beautiful circuit of these crazy years. The historical circuit of Francorchamps was exceptional for driving at very high speeds but also extremely dangerous especially in the event of rain as was the case in this year 1966. This circuit has always been my favorite when I practiced GPL and I appreciate your dexterity at the wheel of this Eagle which will triumph with Dan Gurney in 1967.
Brilliant, brilliant, brilliant! In years to come, when all racing will be virtual, this will be hailed as a classic of the genre. The race had everything, including a ghost in Stewart's machine, it seems. Amazing driving, hats off for taking the underpowered Gurney Eagle up through the places. Such a sad end to the race but have to be grateful for that crash trajectory between building and wall! Fantastic stuff, thanks so much for all you do.
Wow that was incredible. Firstly thanks for the detailed history lesson of the old Spa Circuit, I always find these really interesting. I hope Ritchie is well enough recovered for the next round I suspect he might have at least a sore neck. But to see Stewart spinning off in near enough the exact same place as the real race was very strange. I'm eagerly waiting for the next episode.
I don’t know if you did it on purpose but having the commentary stop and just have a few moments of no information really added to the tension. It was literally like it happened live, and I was wondering “What happened?” “Is Axelson OK?” Intentional or not, it helped add a bit of realism to the simulation. 👍
Talk about history repeating itself with Jackie's big off. If urban legend is led to be believed, he had to be stripped out of his racing overalls before being hauled to the waiting ambulance, at the very moment where some passing nuns were walking past - and one of them had a camera...
The thing with the nuns is Graham Hill had stripped Stewart naked from his gasoline soaked overalls as they were burning his skin and were still a fire risk. Hill & Bob Bondurant then went to find an ambulance. The nuns then came by to help out & put Jackie back into his overalls for propriety. So Hill & had to strip Jackie, who had broken ribs & an injured shoulder, for a second time before he went into the ambulance.
Keeping up with the Grand Prix movie lore, the McLaren’s couldn’t run at Spa due to engine trouble, so Bob Bondurant was mocked up as a white Yamura on the grid, but he didn’t get too far in the race. Phil Hill ran a McLaren-Ford V8 non-competition camera-car behind the main field for the calamitous Lap 1. Jo Bonnier’s crashed Cooper, spookily left hanging halfway over a sheer drop-off is real footage from race day, but the racing in the rain filmed from a helicopter was shot about a month later, when a similar Spa rain storm caught out the stunt drivers and instead of just normal race running laps their day ended with unplanned crashes that mix well with the chaotic race.
Alternate reality in this world I guess is that Stewart, though having a similar crash to real life, missed the telephone poll so perhaps he never began his safety campaign. Perhaps it would’ve been Jim Clark or Jochen Rindt after that race to promote safety instead!
It looks like Jackie would have spent 25 min trying to lever Graham Hill out of his bent BRM in this version of the race and from what I know of the two drivers Jackie would have still been the one to launch a campaign for safety.
Would be fun if the ItalianGP was held at Monza 10K (W/ Bankings), in reference to the Grand Prix movie. Though, it will be hard because the 1966 carset of that specific track would need to be edited. The original carset, if my memory serves me correctly, was for the 1966 movie, with the characters Sarti, Barlini, Stodard and Aaron

I was competing online 20 years ago with a crap 'net connection and the netcode still made the racing eye-wateringly good. Great to see that UKGPL is still going strong online, too. I absolutely love your attention to detail, especially at the end of the race (well, what was the end of the race for you, anyway...) - because I've never been in a crash thankfully but that's how I imagine it would play out; 'oh dear, making contact---' out of consciousness, some time passes by - blink, everything silent, pieces all around you, out of consciousness again - blink, still silent but 'where in god's name is that pain coming from?! Oh Jesus, this is bad...'
Shit this game still looks beautiful after all these years. I remember my pentium 2 struggled with it and I never had a wheel. But I like all sorts of genres.
Definitely not your fult, Ginther didn't use the outer side of the rack as much as Rindt in front of him did... Had he done that, this accident would have been prevented. (Typical case of AI not switching lanes fast enough as a result of only being programmed to analyse their surroundings up to a certain distance and speed discrepancy with other cars)
Yes Ginther came across alright. But I'm really impressed with GPL AI when comparing it to much newer sims such as Assetto Corsa which is truly shocking. I've been punted off the track so many times that it can take several attempts to complete a race.
@@fredscratchet1355 Well, the GPL AI can move lanes as if you were on a slot car track and moved the car from one rail to another, that is their advantage. It does come at the price of looking sketchy, also the AI is already pretty limited, for example you can go much tighter at Eau Rouge entry, but the AI can't be programmed to use the same line because of the way the track is built. As AI in sim racing advances (the very newest F1 titles by Codemasters have some very good AI for todays standards), they will provide amazing immersion. But the positives in the AI of GPL make it very fun to race against them, even after now 24 (!) years after release.
the guys who actually drove those cars for real were absolutely insane. You pretty much were likely to die if you had any kind of crash at speed back then.

Just out of curiosity, do you still use TrackIR as you did in the '65 season? I was thinking of getting it but wasn't 100% sure... I don't want to do VR due to motion sickness.
I think there may have been a virtual fatality or two in this...you should probably kill off Rindt, Bondurant & Clark might have been hospitalised too. Would be cool if it simulated that
It's a shame you left BRABHAM I was hoping you wouldn't go to Eagle you driven the 67 car SOO much over the years on this channel I was hoping for something different this practically hands the title to Brabham due to A VERY BIG SPOILER that will happen VERY SOON so I would like to congratulate Jack Brabham for winning the 1966 F1 World Championship! Tough luck, but that was avoidable. I was sucking air through my teeth 400m before the apex because every other time you went down the inside there you were slower and the others would steam in on the racing line. This time you had someone close behind as well as alongside, which was unfortunate, but that made it very precarious from a long way out. Still, dropped scores, and it was still very enjoyable.

I just watched the 1966 film tonight it's on YT for free at the moment nearly 3 hours but worth it.

@@MsZeeZed The safety revolution took place anyway, as Richie's Son Ryan, who races in early nineties CART, benefits from safer road courses.

I absolutely love your attention to detail, especially at the end of the race (well, what was the end of the race for you, anyway...) - because I've never been in a crash thankfully but that's how I imagine it would play out; 'oh dear, making contact---' out of consciousness, some time passes by - blink, everything silent, pieces all around you, out of consciousness again - blink, still silent but 'where in god's name is that pain coming from?! Oh Jesus, this is bad...'

Shit this game still looks beautiful after all these years. I remember my pentium 2 struggled with it and I never had a wheel. But I like all sorts of genres.

Definitely not your fult, Ginther didn't use the outer side of the rack as much as Rindt in front of him did... Had he done that, this accident would have been prevented. (Typical case of AI not switching lanes fast enough as a result of only being programmed to analyse their surroundings up to a certain distance and speed discrepancy with other cars)
Yes Ginther came across alright. But I'm really impressed with GPL AI when comparing it to much newer sims such as Assetto Corsa which is truly shocking. I've been punted off the track so many times that it can take several attempts to complete a race.
@@fredscratchet1355 Well, the GPL AI can move lanes as if you were on a slot car track and moved the car from one rail to another, that is their advantage. It does come at the price of looking sketchy, also the AI is already pretty limited, for example you can go much tighter at Eau Rouge entry, but the AI can't be programmed to use the same line because of the way the track is built.
As AI in sim racing advances (the very newest F1 titles by Codemasters have some very good AI for todays standards), they will provide amazing immersion. But the positives in the AI of GPL make it very fun to race against them, even after now 24 (!) years after release.

the guys who actually drove those cars for real were absolutely insane. You pretty much were likely to die if you had any kind of crash at speed back then.
Oh man it looked like a few of the spectators got hit. This would have been a very dark day for F1 if it had really happened.
They were able to quickly duck out of the way.
Aaah, it was such an amazing race. Nothing you could do though. How many cars finish the race?

James I have it installed and running on Win 10. There is a lot of useful info online explaining how to do it.
Just out of curiosity, do you still use TrackIR as you did in the '65 season? I was thinking of getting it but wasn't 100% sure... I don't want to do VR due to motion sickness.
i don’t, some of the newer mods in gpl dont support it anymore and in general across sims i have stopped using it

The WSC actually occured on the same day as the Monaco Grand Prix in 66, so it wouldnt have been possible to compete in both

It's a shame you left BRABHAM I was hoping you wouldn't go to Eagle you driven the 67 car SOO much over the years on this channel I was hoping for something different this practically hands the title to Brabham due to A VERY BIG SPOILER that will happen VERY SOON so I would like to congratulate Jack Brabham for winning the 1966 F1 World Championship! XD

Tough luck, but that was avoidable. I was sucking air through my teeth 400m before the apex because every other time you went down the inside there you were slower and the others would steam in on the racing line. This time you had someone close behind as well as alongside, which was unfortunate, but that made it very precarious from a long way out.
Still, dropped scores, and it was still very enjoyable.
