- JAPAN vs BRAZIL | Semi Finals Highlights | Women's VNL 2024. The semi-finals of the Volleyball Nations League 2024 were held in Bangkok, Thailand on Saturday, June 22nd.
The Japan Women's National Team, ranked 7th in the FIVB World Rankings (before the start of the match), faced Brazil, ranked 1st, and won with a set score of 3-2 (26-24, 20-25, 25-21, 22-25, 15-12). By winning their match against Brazil, who are in the same group as them in the Paris 2024 Olympic qualifying round, the team has secured a place in the finals and secured their first medal at this tournament. This is the first time in 10 years that the Japan Women's National Team has won a medal in an Olympic or International Volleyball Federation tournament, since winning a silver medal at the 2014 World Grand Prix.
Their next opponent for the finals will be Brazil, who they have lost their last three matches against in full sets. They will be hoping for a win as a prelude to the Paris 2024 Olympics.
In the first set, Japan took a 2-point lead with a block point by ARAKI Sayaka and a service ace by YAMADA Nichika. WADA held on to make it 21-22, but they still had the set point at 21-24. However, with incredible tenacity, they scored consecutive points to turn the game around to 25-24, and finally won the first set 26-24 with a powerful shot from Wada that deflected the opponent's block.
In the second set, Koga Sarina and others played well to get the score at 5-3, and then Koga's service ace and Yamada's block point made it 9-5. Libero Fukudome continued to pick up Brazil's powerful spikes, bringing momentum to the team. In the middle of the set, Brazil, which has many offensive tricks, caught up with Japan at 11-11 and allowed them to turn the game around. Setter Iwasaki Koyomi also tried to find an attacking pattern to prevent the opponent's block from focusing on Japan, but Brazil, which had better block defense than Japan, left Japan behind at 14-17. Japan held on until the end, but the set count was tied at 1-1 at 20-25.
In the third set, Yamada scored consecutive points from his serve, and Ishikawa scored points with blocks. Kojima also made a super receive, and the match was evenly matched at 9-9. Iwasaki scored points with a serve that varied in speed, leading to a 12-10 lead, and then Miyabe Airi, who came in as a substitute, scored a direct spike to make it 14-11, but they gave up consecutive block points and were closed to a one-point difference at 14-13. Wada's spike was successful in the end to take the third set at 25-21.
In the fourth set, Japan was overwhelmed by Brazil from the start, and allowed them to take a 0-6 lead. In order to change the flow of the game, Inoue Arisa and Seki Nanami were sent onto the court, and Japan closed the gap to 5-8. Japan closed the gap to just two points at 15-17, and with both teams playing well towards the end of the set, it was a close match at 21-21. However, Brazil took the lead and took the set 25-22, forcing Japan into a full set for the fourth consecutive match against Brazil.
In the fifth set, Yamada's serve led to four consecutive breaks, giving the team a good start at 4-0, and Wada's spike and Miyabe's consecutive blocks put the team ahead at 7-1 in the first half. Brazil also fought back to close the gap to 7-6, but Ishikawa's spike led to a court change at 8-6. Brazil fought back hard to tie the score at 9-9, but Koga and others held on and made it 10-10, not allowing the team to come back. After that, Koga scored a difficult toss from Kojima to make it 11-10, Wada's back attack made it 12-11, and Yamada's service ace put them in the lead at 13-11. Ishikawa's spike put them in checkmate at 14-12, and Ishikawa scored again to take the score at 15-12, winning the fierce full-set battle.
