  • Laser Dot Sights or Red Dot Sights were originally invented for use on high powered rifles to assist with accurate aiming. It has been adapted by wildlife photographers for use with super telephoto lenses.
    Do you need a dot sight for birding? How does it work?
    Is it useful or just a waste of your money?
    Watch my explanation in full 4K. Set to your highest video resolution for best viewing.
    If you feel my manner of talking a bit slow, set your playback to 1.25x.
    EDIT: I have an update to this video at this link:-

    James, thanks for the informative and relaxed style of your video. Another point you could have mentioned, was that if taking BIF and shooting continuous shots, this dot site will allow you to keep track of the bird whilst your viewfinder is black, due to the continuous shooting.

      For birds, use red dot. Green dot blends in with trees & foilage.

    Thanks for the video. I also use one. Just to add. The reference subject used for calibration matters also. You should calibrate based on where you normally want to focus. If the subject is much further away from the reference calibrated point, the red dot needs to be below the subject, and if it is nearer than the reference point, the dot sight needs to be above. Needs practice. But I usually depend on the camera AF to lock on as the subject will be generally in the vicinity of the dot.

    • @davidinmd712
      @davidinmd712 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's correct because you can not stand there with an allen wrench adjusting your MAO. You have to learn to "feel-it-in".

    • @johnd7564
      @johnd7564 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The easy way is to measure the distance from center of your sensor to the dot (on my Nikon Z 50, that's 3 7/8"). Then calibrate to aim 3 7/8" above your target. Then just aim 3 7/8" above your subject, and that will be consistent from 1M to the moon.

      Thank you Stephen. The subtitles are meant for my deaf friends. I work with the deaf community and actually started doing birding videos for them but found that it also was liked by other birders, who requested that I 'speak' as well. My brain can't cope with deaf signing and talking at the same pace, so I decided on subtitles.
      I will make subtitles optional in future that you can turn off. You can watch my early videos that are only in Sign Language - search for my Dairy Farm Nature Park videos.

    How far from the target do you have to be (or recommend) to calibrate the dot site? Interesting. I never knew about this product. This may come in handy with the mirrorless cameras where some complain about the EVF shutting off and having to wake the camera, which sometimes cause them to miss a shot. It seems with this you can quickly acquire the subject without having to wake the camera and getting your eye to the EVF simultaneously and possibly loose the subject.

      You have to re-calibrate every time you remove the sight from your camera and re-attach it again. That's because you definitely will not be able to attach the sight back to the EXACT same position given the play in the hot shoe. It will shift slightly so it's better to do a quick check and re-calibrate.,

      You will need a 'dot sight to camera' adapter. Fit the adapter to the dot sight and slot into your camera hotshoe. Links to buy the adapter are in the comments below.
      Otherwise, you can buy a camera dot sight from Nikon, Olympus or Leica that will fit directly onto your camera hotshoe without the need for an adapter. Regardless of the brand, any dot sight should work with any camera.

    It's so true. I kept on saying where is the bird. My friend will tell me, there. I will then say, I cannot see. 🤣🤣🤣🤣 Btw, what is the recommended laser dot sight that we can get here in SG?

      Hi Claudia, maybe best if you visit a dealer shop and see what suits you? There are camera specific brands like Nikon, Olympus and Leica but they can be used with any camera of course. Then there are these adapted from the guns and rifle dot sights. You can get them on-line but you will require a hot shoe adapter to fit the camera hotshoe.

    I trust the one you are using is a cheaper reflex type dot sight instead of a holographic laser sight, the dot is light up by a LED diode projected on the glass, it is not a holographic image.
