7:55 The funny part about Jim's look when Darrel tries to bring his daughter to land him the job, is that Jim literally tried to do that exact same thing when he got caught lying about jury duty 🤣🤣
Have no idea why the algo was so finnicky on this video. Sorry for the 'stop-gap' solutions. I'll be back on camera to fill the gaps starting in the S7 Wrap up.
I think the reason Darryl did not get promoted is the same reason Jim did not become manager again. They do not want one of the straight characters to hold the role because then half of the source of comedy is gone.
I think that’s also why the Andy-California combination was chosen. You have a relatively more normal guy who can sell mooossst of the heartfelt manager scenes but is still whacky enough to be mined for comedy and a more mysterious and darker but still funny in how people react to him guy who’s the one really replacing the “crazy/weird boss” role that Michael filled but in a radically different take on that basic concept
I hate the way the writers diminished Jo's business savvy. She clearly is a successful, smart CEO, yet they have her hire unqualified bosses. I find it hard to believe she would recommend Nellie, be bamboozled by Robert, or reward DeAngelo, a stranger with zero sales experience, just because he rescued her dogs.
I started watching the Office in my first or second semester in college, right when these episodes premiered. Because of this, these were my first episodes I’ve ever seen, and they’ll always hold a very special place in my heart as the episodes that got me into the series!
I find this episode hilarious but also infuriating. Jo didn't seem particularly interested in making a good decision. But I think it's pretty cool that Ultron ran the Office for awhile, lol.
I think the GOB Bluth not having a plan thing was a spoof of Rick Perry, who was running for president at the time and couldn’t name the three federal agencies he wanted to get rid of.
This is the episode where Robert California was an amazing character. If they'd kept him as a Svengali type conman like he was here, season 8 would've been *much* better for him. It's puzzling what they actually did with him later.
Most of the general interview questions I ask are "how would you deal with a stressful situation at work." If someone told me they have a sure fire plan to increase sales, they would provide some information about that.
Oh god manager Gabe would’ve been funny now that you’ve brought it up, though I think Andy was a better choice for the guy looking to put himself between the branch and California in order to protect them from his craziness now that the CEO is the “weird boss” in the show, a dynamic I think really works for season 8 Season 9 on the other hand probably could’ve done to shuffle Dwight into the manager spot sooner
5:20 - oooooh I actually didn't know that. It's pretty cool how involved the producers of the show were in adapting real life into this 'world' .. the characters felt like real people and you related to someone on some level 👌🏽 that's probably why they were able to steal so many people's hearts
Catherine Tate was a big deal before she did Doctor Who. She had her own sketch show in the UK which was frickin hilarious. If you aren't familiar with her, check out her sketch called The Offensive Translator, it's very very funny
I agree. And Dr Who is a huge deal everywhere! Even in the US! Saying she was there just to be discovered and to make Dr Who relatable is completly wrong in my opinion.
It felt wrong. This is the same guy who got put in a closet for playing computer games at work and took off for Thailand with no notice to his job in Season 5. He has no high ground at all.
In my personal head Canon, Robert California is the alias Alan Shore took after getting involved in a case with some shady clients at Crane, Poole and Schmidt, and he decided to go incognito as a humble manager at a mid size company far from Boston
I would’ve loved to see more of Creed as Manager, like trying to keep him from destroying the Company and then having some one like Dwight about to save it but last moment another person as Andy interfiere and get the credit.
These videos are showing me how many scenes are cut from the Netflix version. I don't know why they don't just release full episodes. It's not like we're bound by schedules anymore.
Chris, thanks for the new field guide. BOBODY funny AF. Totally under rated comment. May I ask you a Q? What do you mean when you say “meta”? As in this episode is very meta. I’ve never heard this comment except in your videos. Thank you.
Hey! Interesting question. Might be a lot of different answers, so I'll say what it means to me. "Meta" in film/tv/video games are self-referential...or in other words...scenes, lines, jokes, or the entire premise of the story work to expose that there is a layer beyond what you're seeing on screen; there are writers, producers, actors, set dressing, editors, etc. Deadpool is an easy example of a meta film, as breaking the fourth wall and confirming that the audience is watching a movie. When I say that Search Committee is a "meta episode", I'm saying that everything happening on screen is commentary on everything that happened off screen. A search for what to do after Steve Carell (Michael Scott) left actually happened, and it included Paul Lieberstein (Toby). Andy (Ed Helms) gets the promotion in the end, because he already worked there and had the loftiest credentials.
Yeah, asking Will Arnett’s character to fully go into his plan WAS weird BUT believable, considering these guys aren’t managers or interviewers… they made mistakes… I mean, c’mon, WHO ended up getting the job?👀👀😂
Man I think Gabe would’ve actually been a good person to take over as manager. He’s definitely a highlight of the last 3 seasons and the only new character who actually could’ve fit into the office universe from the beginning seemlessly. He’s different enough from Michael to where people wouldn’t write him off as a Michael Scott copycat/stand-in, while still having some similar characteristics as Michael. And he had enough complexity to dive farther into over time and have it be interesting, because he’s a pretty strange character.
Spader had an additional appearance in Seinfeld when he was the addict going thru the 12 step program, and he was on step 9 apologizing to everyone. He apologizes to Jerry and other people but never apologized to George for making fun of him when George wanted to borrow his sweater but Spader didnt want to let him use it cause George's fat head when ruin it 😅. He was a full on guest star in that episode, real Robert California-esk in that episode too.
Question: has anyone ever worked in a workplace where they and fellow employees had to interview potential candidates for who was gonna be their own boss?
3:30 Ryan being a hypocrite was annoying. You were put in a closet because you were badmouthing your boss and playing computer games. But that was just Ryan after Season 5. One dimensional serotype who used to be an engaging character. And the office randomly turning doesn't track. They never blamed Michael for their crappy lives in that way; its just here for tension and doesn't fit. And honestly, everything Gabe said about Andy, a notoriously subpar salesman with insecurity, instability, sexual harassment, and documented anger issues, is not a good fit for leadership. But story said otherwise. Gabe got so screwed. The interviews are really funny besides Kelly, who's just an annoying diva at this point. No version of that girl is every funny in fiction or nonfiction. Mixed positive but I have a lot of fun with this one especially with the UK Office connectivity and Arrested Development tie in. 13:26 Respect, Mulverine. Respect.
This should’ve been the last episode . And for me when I rewatch, it is. I HATE seasons 8 and 9, especially 9. They should’ve just left it at this and had us imagine any of these candidates as the new manager
You always talk about how weird it is to see big celebrities on the show and it takes you out of it but Steve Carell and Ed Helms made big names for themselves during the show and that seems fine. I understand that they weren't as big before they were on the show but I feel you put too much on the real world aspect of the show
7:55 The funny part about Jim's look when Darrel tries to bring his daughter to land him the job, is that Jim literally tried to do that exact same thing when he got caught lying about jury duty 🤣🤣
and he got away with it ..

I think Oscar would have been a good manager
actually....
I wonder why they never gave him a chance ..
Especially since they mentioned previously there were 3 accountants doing the work of 2

oh interesting - I don't think I'd considered Darryl a straight character, but maybe I'm working in too much s8&9 into the reading! I like that point.
@@Mulverine I mean at the bare minimum, he is still more competent than Michael or Andy.
Also Craig Robinson was very against the idea of Darryl becoming manager.

His time at The Office was blood epic! I just rewatched Season 8 and my goodness do I stay amazed at James for just doing all the things! 🔥
I think the GOB Bluth not having a plan thing was a spoof of Rick Perry, who was running for president at the time and couldn’t name the three federal agencies he wanted to get rid of.
It only reminds me I could be watching Arrested Development instead.
This is the episode where Robert California was an amazing character. If they'd kept him as a Svengali type conman like he was here, season 8 would've been *much* better for him. It's puzzling what they actually did with him later.
They needed to make him more unremarkable because he was stealing the show ..
@@theluschmaster Just like he did a lot on the series he was on after the office. His acting is just extremely captivating.
Most of the general interview questions I ask are "how would you deal with a stressful situation at work." If someone told me they have a sure fire plan to increase sales, they would provide some information about that.

The idea of Robert California and Raymond Reddington being the same guy gives me too much satisfaction.

Just Dwight as he is in the office, rather than over the top ridiculous all powerful fuhrer Dwight would have been fascinating to watch.

Hey here's a fun fact Will Arnett's grandmother lived in the house next door when I was a kid. He wasn't famous then just a really awesome dude.

Andy's reaction to his interview always confused me, he should have felt a personal victory that he made Gabe lose it and look stupid.
SHUT UP ABOUT THE SUN!!!!!!!!
This episode/two parter has so many quotable moments. :D
Your editing on this video made me burst out laughing at 5-6 different times. I legitimately guffawed.

It was interesting to hear that the Netflix version differs from the original. I wonder if there are any other platform versions
It would’ve been cool to see James Gandolfini in a cameo role
Definitely see Robert California in blacklist🤣🤣🤣
I think it would’ve been a fun arc if they brought Ricky G on for just half a season to replace Michael
At least the office shows Kelly's actor could write a decent show
Jim Carrey ❤️
