The real thing that makes this line genius, is the way Louie has to take a deep breath after this brief moment of self reflection, and loses his train of thought. You cant write this stuff, you have to live it
The reason that it's funny is because a human knows both sides of the conversation. They know what it's like to be in the weird time of love and most if not all men know how it feels to be Louie trying to get someone out of their league. But like all comedy it is exaggerated like how the joke being on Louie is. For something to be funny the joke has to be "at" someone, in this case it's how we laugh at Louie for being so incredibly unconfident towards himself. That is where the jokes come from.
I love the way they hold that painfully long, level two-shot while Louie shoots his shot, but then when he's done the camera switches to low angle close ups of both characters in quite shallow depth of field making them really pop against the background. It's like it's saying, here are two people on roughly the same level, and then Louie completes his proposition and suddenly they're both feeling kinds of "bigger", and "better" about themselves. Or we're seeing each one as the other sees them: kind of high-status, individuals of worth. I like that.

Gotta love Parker.
Tried this once, got hit with an atlas and suffered a concussion.
This is why you don't approach women who read. They know things. Dangerous things.
Your head must've been spinning. You must've said something offensive, on a global scale.
Louis' a great actor. Like really.
he's not acting. He's just reflecting how we truly are at this age
He's not acting.
I'm proud of him for managing to do this without even jerking it once 👍
LOL his hands reaching out like he's about to grab her
At first I thought he was gonna whip it out when he got her over there😂
lmaoo
How can she resist a silver-tongued devil like that?
The music goes so well with this
This is just so human. Love it.
Ugh that face and energy he gets when she walks away....swear to god one of the best feelings in the whole world.
All those expressions on this woman's pretty face as Louis continued babbling non-stop. I had my eyes glued to her face throughout.
"I don't choose guys based on looks..." ROFL!
The most unrealistic line in the scene tbh
@@bojangbugami8650 Well she admitted that that is what she has been doing and is trying to change.
With every woman it varies obviously, looks can only get you so far, especially if you have a crappy personality
I know plenty of women that don't.
Parker Posey's reactions while he's talking helped really sell this scene. Damn shame Louie got lumped in with Weinstein and Cosby, can't wait for his return!
he didnt get lumped in, he earned it.
@@robi6317 asking permission to jerk off in front of a woman and drugging a girl and raping her while she is passed out are nowhere near the same thing. This isn't apples to oranges.
Louis CK did nothing wrong
@@butch2811 YES they ARE 2 very different things, however he was doing it to women opening for his act for one thing. and its still creepy ass behavior. he did what he did and women dont tend to like it. therefore he got outed for being a creepy weirdo, vs just doing what he does in this very video.
@@QuartuvLarry yeah he kinda did
He had more balls when he asked his colleagues if he could wax his carrot in front of them
Haha, this was so funny in every way...🤣 Crack me up but yeah! See got the date in the end! 😼😺👏 Love it!
This begins one of my favorite series of episodes
I’m so sad I just want Louis Ck back
The first couple seconds are straight out of a porn scene
lol
@Pickle man Yeaaah minus the bad acting
You watch too much porn.
Yeah and so is the saxophone at the end :P
"How to beg a girl out" should be the tittle
It's just being honest and nice and human. Don't be so hung up on small notions of pride it won't get you anywhere
@@bronyatheistfedora Alright, go try this in real life and see if you get past the first date.
@@cowsarea you sound like a real expert, I'm sure there's rigorous empirical investigation behind that
@@bronyatheistfedora Well I've had sex before so compared to you I think I'm an expert.
@@cowsarea you think you've had more sex than Louis CK?
“It’s low risk…”
Smooth, Louis C.K
Had an experience like this recently. I thought I was being charming and vulnerable at the time, but looking back on it, I just simped. It blew up in my face, got rejected, and today I still feel uncomfortable if our paths cross. Having said all that, I'm still glad I made the effort, as cringey as it was, when the alternative was to do/say nothing because I was so damn afraid. Definitely learned from it, so I chalk it up as a small step forward disguised as a lurch back.
"you are young and beautiful and I'm neither of those things" just had to look it up turns out they are only 1 year apart.
And then you remember that Louis wrote all her lines ...
When I see this I can't help but think of how this storyline ends, and, as per usual for Louis, it's absolutely heart-breaking and devastating
Thought the same, the end is just brutal
@@WillyGrippo what went down
@@stratdaddy One of the best episodes of television. Manic Pixie Dreamgirl!
And weird.
Loses her on NY eve then he runs away to China 😂
"have a NO queued up" :)) killed me.
This is so much funnier in retrospect. The title I mean, didn’t even watch the video.
This is art, not real life. No woman will respect you if you approach like this.
i’m smiling so big for louie at the end of the scene rn. and i’m drunk in the whataburger drive thru. and i’ve seen this scene before.
underrated comment
Hope you weren’t driving
Respect brother
How was the burger?

"You wouldn't want to go out with me, would you?"
Works every time.......
If you say no it's a yes
they'll just avoid remarking on that by laughing at your "joke" :(
"I sweat a lot and I'm lumpy". HA HA HA!!! Louis CK's stand up is entertaining. But this show was incomparable. Brilliant stuff!
IDK why but I always have a big dopey smile on my face whenever I watch this clip every couple of years.
I'm so shy and awkward in those situations, that I cant even watch this.
His reaction at the end is so funny… great actor!! Please come back Louie.. the series you had just started was friggin brilliant. I don't understand why he can't just come back and do his thing.
The only way this scene works is Parker Posey absolutely nailing her reactions. Yes, Louie is brilliant and yes she's beautiful but without her performance here, this scene falls apart. So much respect for that woman.
You could argue that the scene nearly falls apart in the minute after she leaves the frame.
Bet she wasn't told what the actual dialogue is going to be like. Her reactions look unrehearsed.
@@sca8217 There's no way she didn't see the script before shooting, that just doesn't happen.
@@varuntheestallion Obviously, this is a shoot not an improv. There are multiple retakes
@@varuntheestallion happens on curb your enthusiasm every episode 🤷🏼♂️
I'm 49 and feel weird to even try and date now.
Try on fat women
It's one of my most bittersweet adult dreams to bump into Parker and fumble awkwardly through a proposal for a date with her. She would immediately recognize my performance as a heartfelt tribute to this scene, and say yes. However, I'm not bald or lumpy, and I don't sweat a lot, so maybe there's a chance it would be real.
