    Damn Cory, you're on a roll here, what a series. Advocating for honesty, restraint, and steadiness over greed will do the hobby a lot of good. A small request for future video-advice on technical details like culling, line breeding, things to avoid (incest?). Loving the series so far.

      +John Martinez Sure, I'll work that into a future part of this series.

    Outstanding video - if people don't believe you, I can tell them that while I am no longer a major breeder, in the 1980s I was a major breeder - we had one local fish store and they hooked me up with a wholesaler (different world than today) - I delivered my fish to the LFS and they passed them on to the wholesaler and I made quite a bit of money --- and I NEVER sold a fish to anyone else, not a single one - I didn't even talk about our arrangement because I was afraid others would horn in LOL

      Only a few years and a bazillion hours ROFL but I loved what I was doing --- never made enough to even consider making it a business, but it sure helped keep the wife off my back on what I was spending on the hobby LOL

    I really love this one, people don't understand bubbles when it comes to economies and you explained it really well! I think you also explained really well why slow and steady growth is better than instant gratification of big profits that dies off fast
    Also why does noone buy fish in the summer? I would expect they dont buy in the winter, but supply is low in the winter because shipping is less reliable.

    • @AquariumCoop
      @AquariumCoop  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +; Expected Well in the summer people are enjoying outdoor hobbies that overlap the fish tank hobby. Such as gardening. Ponds, nature activities like hiking etc. People who are into nature, are into fish a lot of times etc. I shouldn't say no one buys fish but it does go way down in the summer months.

    Geez 700 angels in a spawn? Wow. Amateur hour here (points at self) lost my first two spawns entirely. On the third twelve lived, but half were derpy and I culled them. The six remaining I kept in my show tank and grew out to full size. I was super proud of that. 700 angels, wow.

    Selling online is the way forward in this industry. I can provide fish cheaper to my customers delivered to their door than they could possibly sell in a store with massive overhead costs. It is also a good way to target specialist fish keepers who are looking to buy the rarer stuff. If you're selling to local stores you are limited to run of the mill fish that sell for pennies because that's all they sell to novice fishkeepers in the local area.

    How do you sell guppy pairs? Do they already have to have had fry together? (Breeding pair?) also how do you as a store sell them? Like if I came in and gave you 5 pairs of 3 different strains of guppies (30). How would you sell them, like all in one big tank- separated pairs or will the customers pick how many they want ect. Also why pairs? Will stores accept trios or just males why or why not just random #'s of each? Thank you:)

    My main question now is.
    1. Should I ask the stores if I can sell before I start breeding? Or after?
    2. How do you deliver fish without them getting harmed

    • @JHASH_PETS
      @JHASH_PETS ปีที่แล้ว

      1. Never do that. The Shop owner will always avoid you. Before started breeding i did that mistake.
      2. Double packing, Practice multiple times with an empty bag and water. The fastest you pack, the best the packing.

I know you said to raise what the market wants not what I think is cool but I want to add swordtail & plattys but was told they don't sell for much unless they are rare. When I kept fish (I am in England) in the 1960s & 1970s, there were 6 Local Fish Stores ("Trop Shops") in my town of 160, 000 (Southend-on-Sea). 3 of them were within 15 minutes walk of my home. Nowadays, there are relativel;y few, but much larger, outlets, nearly all located in garden centres. I would hazard a guess that commercial rents and parking availability were the main factors, also these days people often have an afternoon out at a garden centre, including a snack, visiting an aquatic dealer, etc.

    Loving this topic Cory. I'll admit that somewhere in the back of my mind I always think of turning this hobby into a job lol (or at least turn it into something that can pay for itself!). Need to pick your brain a bit more on this though (I'd love to sit down in person with you one day and talk shop!.....let me know if you ever make it out to NY!). Interesting to hear your thoughts on this with the angelfish example and the various stores vs craigslist etc. A lot of what you describe seems to sort of assume a relatively knowledgeable end customer who is willing to comparison shop at the various LFS. What would you say your "average customer" in the store is ? I would've always assumed that selling to various LFS is a good idea. The stores that have been around a while obviously are able to compete with one another and already have very very similar stock. So I'm surprised to hear you advise against selling to the multiple stores. As a business owner do you think geography plays any part in this? Would the same "rules" apply throughout the country (or the world)? I'd assume that the hobbyists who already know to check out craigslist, aquabid, forums, local clubs etc. is not buying much from the LFS to begin with and from that I wouldn't imagine cragislist really competing too much with the LFS.

    • @AquariumCoop

      +Rich's Fishes Well fish is no different than cheeseburgers. While Mcdonalds, Jack In the Box, and Burger King all sell cheeseburgers. They are all slightly different. Yet everyone has an opinion on who makes the best cheeseburger etc. The same goes on with fish. People may not shop other stores every time. But most hobbyists will stop by a store if they were already driving by. If all of a sudden they notice everything is cheaper at one store, they may have a bad image of the store they were using. I did a survey of my customer base. I polled 100 people online that were customers. On average they owned 5 or more aquariums. Before the survey I would have said 1-2 would have been the norm.

    I've always wanted to pick something to breed just as a hobby for fun but I didn't know what to do with the babies, so I never did it, I had no idea that stores would take them from people ! I assumed they had to buy from someone with some sort of licensing. I didn't want my family and friends to get sick of getting fish as gifts 😁 maybe I will give it a shot and see if they will take them off my hands. I don't even want to be paid, it would just give myself assurance that they probably got a decent home.

I made no money was so dumb but I was also young after a while I worked out how to breed angel fish (pre TH-cam) I then reduced my fish room to 6 tanks and was turning out over a $1000 a month. It’s easy to get wrapped up in an exspensive hobby

      +Fish Behind Glass I'd say it took 5-10 years of indepth research, breeding and trial and error. I went from just owning some tanks to working at a store 2 years later. To opening up my own store 5-6 years after that. Now 4 years after that here I am sharing knowledge. Keep in mind that this whole time for the past 10+ years. This was 100% my only income was tropical fish, so you learn a few things on the job :)

      @@AquariumCoop Thank you, this series has been helpful. I've wanted to do a guppy display tank, hadn't really considered that it can also help fund my hobby in and of itself.

    Absolutely fascinating. Cory, or any other nerms, do you think it's a good idea to buy from my LFS's own mixed guppy tank and then sell the spawns back to the store? Or would this be seen as shady?

    Hi, if I were to home breed some fish, normally what are the difference of price ( interns of percentage ) between retail price and the price local aquarium willing to buy from me ? Understand that it is different in each country, but just a rough estimation

      Get involved with the local hobby and study and research, stores, hobbyists, test the market etc.

    Will any big chains like petco, petsmart, or petsupermarket buy from local breeders? The only local guy lives 30 minutes away while I have these three right next to my house.

    What about selling online

  • @renebest317
    @renebest317 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Knowing there are multiple variables going in to selling to an LFS, but you're talking to a breeder about potentially buying fish. Assuming the sample is of good quality, is there a baseline percentage price breeders can work off of to negotiate from? (Say, if the store sells an angelfish for $10/ea. A good baseline for selling would be 50% of the selling price? Or lower, like 40% or even 20%?) Thanks!

    • @lemonlizard1
      @lemonlizard1 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sorry for the late comment, but I've heard a bunch of different stuff. Some people take 25-30%, while others take 40-50%. I've heard that taking 50% and removing $1 works well depending on the fish. This wouldn't count for prolific fish like guppies but it seemed like a good rule of thumb

    • @AquariumCoop

      +ajuanton Well, you should report any income to the IRS, if you start doing more than 400 I think it is a year, you should have a business license.
