Rock ballist for rail beds. great catch. we have a rock train that runs from Milford to the main line in Nashua. The pick up rocks for rail roads when the need to repair and improve their lines.
Yeah, 1943 is still on the rock train. This crossing is slated to be removed once a nearby subdivision is developed and a new access road that doesn't cross the tracks is built. I think this is the only crossing left on the Kenosha Sub without gates and LEDs.
@@natestrains1166 precision scheduled railroading has killed the rock train and combined multiple jobs into one... although, we are hearing that the rock will be back as it's own train for 2021... Also all these years later...this crossing still exist.
@Eric T Yeah, that development never took off. There's some houses and a few streets off KR. I'm sure if that subdivision ever does get going again, Hansche Road will eventually be connected. Gittings Road, on the Milwaukee Sub, was also slated for closure after a 90th Street extension was planned. That was over 10 years ago though and it doesn't seem like any progress has been made on it. Funds were available to install gates at Gittings but they were put towards the Old Spring Street signals instead, when all that reconstruction and road widening was going on.
@Eric T I'm kind of near Case High School in Mount Pleasant. Last time I was out at Hansche Road was when the Katy and CNJ heritage units lead Oak Creek loads up in October 2019. I try to shoot more manifests than anything, which aren't always the easiest to catch on the Kenosha Sub. I see the rock job is indeed running on its own again. Looks like 1158 leads south right now, so I'll definitely be trying to get it at this spot again this year.
@TheAmtrakboy A wig-wag is a type of railroad crossing signal. I've shot a few videos of them. If you look through my video list, you should be able to find them. I picked up my crossing bells from ebay. The bell on the signal in this video was maufactured by Safetran and I have no idea what kind of horn is on the locomotive. Thanks for the compliment too!
This crossing still exists according Google maps the signals are still here but they replaced the mechanical bell to a wch electronic bell. That's the only changes I seen.
@jnite67 You sure you have the right location? This is a short, dead end street with houses on it. This crossing is at the only access point to Hansche Rd.
I was born and raised right in this area. Hansche Road was a part of Highway 32 until about 1953, when the new Highway 32, running continuously along the east side of the C&NW tracks, was completed. The old road---the part now known as Hansche Road, bent and crossed the tracks twice at very sharp angles. A few years after the straight Highway 32 was built, the elderly custodian at nearby Hansche School was killed at the southern crossing, along with his wife. (This happened at about the same time that my family and I moved into a new house just across the highway from where it happened.) A few months later the south crossing was permanently closed off, and Hansche Road has been a dead-end road ever since (though not exactly a "cul-de-sac"). Thus isolated, it still retains the feeling of an old farm community.
I remember when there were wig-wags here. This crossing was (most likely still is) slated to be closed, which is why it doesn't have gates like the rest of the crossings on this line. The small subdivision, kiddie corner to WE Energies on KR, was supposed to have a street going to Hansche Road to allow access from the south end. That development never took off so the road wasn't built. I'm sure if things pick up in that area again, they'll complete the planned connection and this crossing will removed.
Yeah, I've been trying to pick spots with very little traffic after having a few videos spoiled with cars pulling right up to the crossing into the shot. Most people are pretty nice though, and will stop behind me when they see me filming.
ChaosDemonwolf : see what happened hoss was first, Santa Fe and Southern Pacific merged, then it broke up. Union Pacific was after SP for a long time. In the late 90's early 2000,s UP finally got the go ahead to acquisition SP railroad. So it was a merger, rather than a full on corporate takeover.
@@Brenton81 Thanks for the reply. I was not sure how busy this road is. I guess not too busy if this road and crossing will be closed someday. And credit to the engineer for sounding the horn as early as possible before getting to this crossing.

i looked on a recent map to locate where this is in Wisconsin and the street you filmed this at is a cul-du-sac. why would they have a crossing at a cul-du-sac?
This cul-de-sac was part of the main road prior to its reconstruction in the 1920s or 1930s. The road actually crossed the tracks twice, and the other crossing was still there but barricaded when I was a kid in the 1960s. Looking on the satellite view, you can see how the old road meandered there.

I like how 11 years later, 1158 (Ex-1943) runs the Rock Job again, under the symbol LBU51X.

Brenton81 I looked it up the location on google earth and one of the signals had a e-bell for some reason

It's still the same. The plan is to eventually close this crossing so it most likely won't get gates.

Cool video...but this was taken in 2009? two UP locos with the 3'rd an SP? I know UP bought out SP......but i thought that happened in the late 80's
