Beautiful lady, giving great advices about fishing. What else real man need? More of those videos of course! Keep up the good work and good luck doing watcha doing with your life! Sad about store closing, I hope it will reopen eventually, been there many times over the past 10 year on my trips to Pulaski, great memories!
I just found this amazing account and thought that I would give you just a bit of insight about it. First there is this really nice lady who says she wants to impart a few tips to help you out when you visit her local fishing hole. I listened with a small bit of "let's see what she has to say", and I have to say I'm glad I did. This young lady was well spoken and seemed to have retained a bit of knowledge passed down from her father and her father's father. Just as a personnel opinion, I think that you did a wonderful job. Definitely going to subscribe. P.S. Fresh water salmon will always taste better than salt water (don't go to Alaska, come to Pulaski instead). Miss that River.
helpful video ... and you asked me if I needed split shots and I did end up needing them... I'll swing by when I come back up and get them from your shop
This was my first year fishing there. The water was to low I was told so I didn’t catch anything. I will tell you this tho, just being there on the River was such an amazing time. I’m hooked and will be there next year with out a doubt. I hope your open next year so I can learn more .
Did you stop into the shop? When you come next year feel free to come in with any questions or you can find me on Facebook for updates as well. @salmonriversportsshop
The Salmon Shop I will definitely stop in next year . It was my first time going so I didn’t know a lot but , I did give it my all. The water was kinda of low so I booked my next year trip for this coming week . Thank you and I can’t wait till next year !!!
Thanks a lot... im new in the buffalo area... desperate to get up north to catch something... but the shops arent very informative on how to catch fish out here.... thanks for being detailed and legit

it took me two years to catch a fish on the Salmon river. this is not uncommon and hey, you appreciate it more when you do finally figure it out. I'll be taking my Girl and her son for the first time this fall. by the way, it was the generosity of a retired guide that got me on to my first fish. If i see someone struggling, I will give to them what was given to me. this was a great video. thanks.
I guess I am guilty of the "not enough weight" a lot of the times... probably why I see the guy next to me hook up fish after fish and I'm only an occasional hook up... thanks for pointing that out... great info... definitely keep making videos and I hope you are able to reopen your shop
Hey Bernie, I’m happy to hear you hooked into one! It’s been a tough season so far so it’s good to hear you were able to get the technique down. The drag is hard to say for sure because it really depends on what the rest of your setup looks like and how to make it compatible with that. Typically you want enough to slow them down but you won’t stop these fish. Moderate drag is the way to go. If it’s not enough they will get too far too fast and too much drag most likely your line or rod will break.
Never been to pulaski and never been salmon fishing i would like to try it sometime this year if it's not to late where is a good spot thank also for the video it was very helpful
Great job your grandfather and father and rest of your family I’m sure are very proud of you! I come up from Connecticut once sometimes twice a year usually do a Driftboat first day then fish on our own the day after sometimes wish I could find a guide that would just walk us to a spot Spend an hour with us and that’s it I would gladly pay for that as well best of luck to you and your family
Eddie Aledia there are guides that do half-day walk-in trips where they spend a few hour late with you walking on the river in spots and showing you what to do. That would be an option to look into and it’s cheaper than a drift boat usually
I went fishing yesterday for big browns we were using 10foot noodle rods but it was not working for me because I usually use light weight equipment for bass I could not set the hook can you use a8foot rod
My grandma and grandpa ran the store for a little while...then they opened up the Big A sport shop next door and owned the building for many years before retiring. You probably know my brother Aaron and his buddy Dave...
Yeahhhh, fishing the banks is definitely the key…the water is slower and the fish are easily visible. The flow was 385 cfs on my trip this year and it was perfect for that style of fishing. We use 11’6” 8wt rods, 20lb leaders with 15lb “tippet” below our swivels/weights and that’s it. No need to further complicate your life.
I hope the steelhead movement picks up sometime this Era lol. Fishing is ROUGH right now with low water levels around the state.. Browns are around but very few steelhead. Usually it's a forest fire for steelhead right frigging now. Rough start for sure.

I love that good amount of people that use ridiculous braided line for like sharks have your stuff than I even use her muskie golf ball weights and a shark rod I love getting caught up on their gear and seeing all over the place wonderful not first time I ever went stopped in that shop and bought like 25 or 30 lb mono cuz I had no idea I know they were big fish and then every year after I went down and test now I use 10-pound Mainline to 8 or 6 pound first salmon on a 10-footer when I get my 13-foot centerpin I'll go back down to four lb what I caught my first steelhead on a little ultralight reel and Rod
Hey !!! Great video, direct and to the point . No fluff ! I took my first trip up there in October of 2019 . Very different from what I do . I'm basically a salt water guy . The only fresh water I do is for the American shad in the Delaware river . I'm from NJ . I was wondering, are there different techniques, baits or approaches in the spring steelhead fishing compared to the early season in November and December? Thanks !!! If your shop is open in the fall of 2020 , I will be at your shop ready to buy a bunch of supplies . My first trip was guided and I'll be joining the masses on the bank of the river this coming fall .
Tightlinenation needs SRSS back in our life. Sixker already commented. My boys grew up talking to button eating pizza in the shop. This year guys asked us their a shop close and I couldn’t tell them to go to the shop. Kinda depressing. Oh well keep your connections up there. And tightlines
If you play them too long you increase the mortality rate as lactic acid builds up. If you plan on C&R, bring them in and let them go. Dont beat them up fighting them.
Greg Fishes I would agree with that in part. You can horse them in. The analogy I like to use it if you took a 20lb log, tied it to the end of your line, and threw it into the current you would have a hard time getting it back in so it is necessary to tire them out to have a shot. That’s a good point to bring up in another video for sure! But you can play them too long too. If they go up river or you’re in slower water you can play them for a bit, but if they turn around and take off down stream in a strong current you probably aren’t getting it back. I’ve seen people try way too long when the fish is well over 100 yards away downstream and at some point it’s time to break off.
The Salmon Shop absolutely, I generally fish areas with a fairly strong current. If the fish is moving up stream I generally can get it in fairly quick the current is working for me. If it turns down stream, I’ll play it just long enough to know it’s going to be prolonged and I’ll have to chase it a fair distance then break it off. What I see is a lot of folks to Salmon who had good advice on gear try to muscle the fish as soon as they hook up, and break off on fish after fish because they over stress their line while the fish is still fresh.
Greg Fishes As a reel repair person the one that makes me cringe is when I see people hook a fish and then start cranking on their reel as hard as they can to try and bring it in. All I can ever think is “well the gears are shot in that one now” Let the rod to do work and retrieve slack line as needed.
I dont even bother with the salmon river and their regs. My first time i was completely unprepared. No noodle stick. Wrong line, wrong hooks, brought the dogs. For the lack of fishing i made up with in education and scouting. I might give it another go this year. So many things are against the law tho.
@@TheSalmonShop first one i almost broke was the first morning when i got to the lot at 3am. Good thing i read the regs board about no night fishing. I packed up and waited for the local shops to open. Went in with all my newbie questions. PS, Can you use a bobber?
Sounds like you really looked upto your grandfather ‘ you really take your family business serious I wish their more young beautiful women round like yourself end care about teaching your trade
Biggest mistake they make is thinking salmon actively eat. They don't, and you should tell them that first instead of hiding it for business purposes And stop with the aggression theory... Theres no aggression left when you see a line every two feet... After the first half mile they are all flossed.
Wish this information was available 20 years ago. Definitely great information for new fishermen to the Salmon River!

I dont have a fly rod, can I use my regular fishing rod ?
Edwin V yeah absolutely depending on what kind. It doesn’t have to be a fly rod but what you’re looking for is length and some flexibility.
@@TheSalmonShop so I went Monday and had an absolute blast!! I cant wait for next year I'll be going allot more !
I am going soon to Pulaski for fishing salmon 🍣
If I were to add another “thing people are doing wrong” it would be people trying to horse the fish and not playing them enough to tire them out.
If you play them too long you increase the mortality rate as lactic acid builds up.
If you plan on C&R, bring them in and let them go. Dont beat them up fighting them.
